This is an unusual little piece of history tucked down a residential area less than 10 minutes walking distance from the New Lynn Shopping Mall and train station; it is the Gardner Bros & Parker downdraught kiln, a unique survival of the larger brickworks that was once held here in the area in bygone days, 1920’s it tells us. There is a plaque next to the kiln with some information about the landmark and it’s significance if you are interested. It is literally surrounded by apartments and one equally unusually out of place kindergarten. I stumbled across the kiln accidentally and thought it may be of interest to some historians, artists or even schools nearby. It is situated down the end of Ambrico Lane, part of Ambrico Place.
