I’m a sucker for the old and the nostalgic. To be transported to other places and times through sights, sounds, smells and tastes, has almost become a hobby of mine; to dream of better times and have a glimpse of the past through things still present is a wonderful experience. El Arcángel is now emblematic in Querétaro’s gastronomic history, a newer cafeteria that has taken root in the city’s historic downtown, now part of many of Querétaro’s denizens’ rotation of dining options. The small restaurant on the corner of Guerrero and Madero dishes out some of the most simple but flavorful food in el Centro, with homemade cooking that makes one wonder if the nuns of the next-door convent ever cooked as great as this eatery does now. The minute dining room is great for breakfast or dinner. Start breakfast with a Panque, a traditional Mexican muffin, and coffee, in great Mexican tradition. The Omelettes and other egg dishes are deliciously satisfying, and the refried beans are among the tastiest I’ve had in restaurants. They also offer Chilaquiles, Molletes, and even Hot Cakes in grand homemade fashion. Dinner is as great as coming home to a great cook. The dishes are the definition of ‘comida casera’, with Bistec Encebollado, Sincronizadas, Pastas, Milanesas, and wonderful homemade soups to round up the menu. The real surprise came in the Enchiladas Queretanas. Filled with delectable Queso Fresco and minced onion, pan fried potatoes and carrots atop wonderful guajillo covered corn tortillas, the enchiladas packed a flavorful punch in every bite, and I was surprised to look at my dish to see that all 5 enchiladas had gone. Needless to say, I’ve left satisfied every time I’ve stepped out of this restaurant after eating a meal. I think I’ve found my home away from home for typical Mexican fare, and I get to experience all the nostalgia time and time again.
