Conoce un poco más sobre la historia de la empresa

Fundado en 2009.

In 1998, Habla director Kurt Wootton worked with a group of professors to create the ArtsLiteracy project in the Education Department at Brown University that piloted a creative way of teaching languages using literature and focusing on the stories of the students.

Kurt and Marimar Patron, a graduate from Hispanic Studies at Brown U, began to formulate the vision for Habla, an educational center based in Marimar’s hometown of Mérida, Yucatan, in Mexico. Together they envisioned a cross-cultural space that is a Spanish School focusing on creative and meaningful ways to learn Spanish and an international education and cultural center where people gather to exchange ideas and best teaching practices.

Now Habla is fueled by a team of teachers, staff, and an international advisory board of leaders in the fields of education, language development, and the arts. Most importantly, Habla’s energy comes from the diverse students from many countries and age-groups that learn at Habla every day.

Maria del Mar (Marimar) was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico where her family has lived for generations. She studied literature at Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico and then went on to a graduate degree in Hispanic Studies at Brown University in the United States. Her work is focused on how reading and literature can be part of the daily life of communities. At Brown she received the prestigious Presidential Teaching Award for her teaching of Spanish language classes to university students. Her unique approach to teaching involves the literature and culture of the language. Marimar has presented talks and workshops on language teaching in a variety of settings including Brown University, Florida Atlantic University, SmART Schools, an arts-integration organization, and the Learning Alliance. Perhaps the greatest lessons she has learned about teaching are from her children Sandra and Luis who are growing up bilingual.
