The take out counter’s nasi is my favourites along Jalan Gasing. The Freshly made rotis are also worth a try. Not too crazy about their curries

This is our fav Indian breakfast place! It’s air-conditioned and hygiene is top notch, the kitchen has see through glass panel. It’s always jam pack with crowd, be it on weekdays or weekend. Breakfast like roti canai, tossai etc are served on the banana leaf. Customers are given wide range of complimentary curry /sambal to choose from. We particularly like the puri, served with mixture of mashed potato, vege, carrots and herbs seasoning; the Appam, served alongside with coconut milk. There is a Malay stall that sells nasi lemak, kuih muih etc just next door, customers are allowed to purchase and bring it over to the restaurant and eat alongside with Indian dishes. Love the quality of food served here. Just the service level can be further improved. Note that some waiters there are from India, it’s better to converse in English as some of them may not understand certain Malay words.

Usually at an Indian restaurant, I would go straight for banana leaf rice but at Lotus, the thing that sets them apart is their Indian snacks and sweets accompanied with a cup of local Teh Tarik. Their traditional kuih selection is quite varied with kuih sago, kuih lapis, other kuihs which have coconut shavings on top or as a filling wrapped up in a coconut milk pancake. There are also curry puffs, fried banana pancakes and vadai — a spiced Indian snack made of fragrant dough. I would recommend the Teh Tarik as it is not too sweet and is a perfect combination of tea and milk pulled to a creamy perfection. Of course, they do serve banana leaf rice served with the compulsory side dishes and curries. Lotus serves all kinds of curry from lamb, chicken fish or vegetarian dhal for a healthier option. On the last visit, we had the curry chicken once but unfortunately it was not as tasty as we thought but still edible. You can order a set of fried chicken as well, that fared better. The long grain rice is fluffy and spiced with dried chilies and pepper seeds, you can always opt for roti to mop the curries with. From the few visits I had, just a simple roti and curry makes for a satisfying, lip-smacking lunch. Overall I would say come for tea time or to pack some kuih for supper, otherwise there are better banana leaf restaurants out there that offers more for the cost they deserve.

I remember going to Lotus every week for breakfast during my school days. Lotus is located in Jalan Gasing, just 5 minutes away from Assunta Secondary School and La Salle. Its a fully air conditioned restaurant that is very clean. My usual order is always thosai and nescafe. Their thosai is so tasty and it’s one of the best thosai’s I’ve eaten. The thosai paired with the combination of chutneys and sambar is just heavenly. A good way to start your mornings! Also, towards the end of my meal, I always order a vadai. I cover the vadai in the mouth watering sambar and let it soften up. The vadai absorbs the sambar and give it a very crunchy exterior and a soft and tasty interior. You should definitely try this Vadai + Sambar combo if you’re at Lotus. Their pricing is slightly on the higher side but their food and service lives up to it and is worth the money. They also have a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Check this place out if you’re ever in PJ!

Apparently this is the most renowned Banana leaf spot in the whole of PJ, KL area. It’s situated right on Jalan Gasing near La Salle school and I remembered smelling the food they cooked all the way from where I parked. When you enter the shop you will smell the aroma of the curry leaves and fried foods! The Rasem(herb soup) they serve is amazing and my favorite is the Salty friend chili, which people normally bite on the side when eating their banana leaf. They have a wide variety of curries and fried foods like chicken, fish and curry muttons and sauces to go with your banana leaf, which will leave you craving for more. I know most people from the PJ area come here for their curry fix. Lotus is opened everyday until 10pm. Avoid going during the weekend if you don’t want to deal with massive food traffic, it’s a bit more chill during the weekdays(although it still gets crowded at dinner time!).

I could remember the days when my late grandfather would bring me and my family out for Indian at the Lotus Family Restaurant when I was still toddler. The fish head curry that, he would always order, along side the briyani rice on the banana leaf. Those were the good times that I remembered with my grandfather. Recently, I wanted relive the moment with my parents of the past and to our dismay the service of the restaurant has deteriorated. The staff did not notice of our presence as we stepped in and we had to find ourselves a table. Well, that did not matter but once we were seated, we had to alert a few times to place our order. Food came pretty fast but the standards has dropped a lot. The chicken briyani was rather tasteless, and the chicken was overcooked. I tried to tell the waiter but he just looked at me with full of arrogance and walked off. I felt they have gotten too high for themselves after years of operating.

For as long as I can remember, the mere thought of Indian food has had the ability to make my mouth water. So when my mother announced that she was taking us for a spice fest especially after so long, I was estatic. Lotus Family Restaurant was buzzing with the lunch time crowd. Despite the bustle, our waiter served us instantly. We all had the banana leaf(shocking!), except I ordered the idli instead of rice. I piled on coconut as well as tomato chutney and smothered it with dhal curry. My meal was absolutely satisfying, every bit of delicious as I remember Indian food being. At the end of the day everything came up to a reasonable amount, considering the massive binge that we had. However it is a little tough to get a seat during peak hours and you might have to rough it out by standing for a while.
