Think vegetarian cuisine is boring? Think again. I came across Beyond Veggie by Secret Recipe back in 2012 in Tropicana City Mall, and it has been my favourite restaurant ever since then. The décor and layout was simple, and they designed one section of the restaurant with leaves and it has a slight tropical feel. They have an intensive menu consists of various appetizers, selection of greens and vegetables, tofu dishes, rice, noodles and many more. I’ve tried quite a few of their dishes and they never once failed me. One of my repeat orders would be their Red Yeast Noodles. The soup was light and flavourful with the sweetness of the wolfberries in it. They were very generous with the portion and ingredients too. This is one dish that I’m very taken into and highly recommended. When it comes to red yeast, the Red Yeast Fried Rice is worth trying too. For a more Western taste, you can opt for the Carbonara with Shitake Mushroom, snow peas and asparagus. The carbonara was creamy yet it doesn’t feel heavy towards to end, and the fried shitake mushroom added extra flavours and textures to the dish. If you love mushroom and butter, then you really have to try their Stir Fried Lion’s Mane Mushroom — it’s creamy and totally I love the combination of butter and curry leaves. The portions for their savoury dishes were pretty big, so it’s suitable for sharing. You can always order bowls of rice and a few dishes to share. Apart from savoury, they have cakes and coffee too. All of their cakes are eggless and they tasted just as delicious. My ultimate favourite would have to be their Macadamia Cheese — the sweetness of the caramel coated macadamia was perfect and goes very well with the cheese. If coffee is not for your, they have healthier drink such as their fruit tea served in a pot and it’s suitable for sharing too. Don’t forget to drop by on Mondays to enjoy their Go Green Mondays promotion or go there from 3pm-6pm for their Tea Time promotion.

As a foodie, it seemed wrong to treat a certain type of food as taboo and avoid it as much as possible. As of yesterday, I broke my only rule; not to visit any vegetarian or vegan-based restaurant or bistro. Of course, I instantly and remorsefully regret my decision. Being a sub-branch of Secret Recipe, all I wanted was the type of food that Secret Recipe would deliver; microwaved but still consistent delicacy. I was wrong. Perhaps the only thing that kept me from walking away was its perfectly trained waiters and waitresses. Mostly ranging from the very young to the dastardly old, they were all friendly, and always eager to serve you horribly designed food. The soups were bland, and certain dishes that should be remained anonymous for the sake of their reputation were marred by its freshness, as you could tell that it sat in the fridge more than the waiters sitting to rest from near to no one visiting the restaurant. From a third person’s perspective, these restaurants looked innocent and less to little compromising to its notions of fresh food, but if you were to experience it yourself, it would seem that the place was created just for the sake of adhering to the new generation of organic based foodies, and had failed to deliver to its name and brand.
