I’m always on a look out for wholesome simple Japanese food. Decided to try this place out, but sadly was really disappointed. It is hilariously under-staff. The food was the worst. I ordered a ramen with chicken. The soup was weird tasting, the chicken tasted like it was cooked and kept in the freezer for some time. My weird had a chicken teppanyaki, which was over seasoned with soy sauce. Worst of all, it looked like it was stir fried. Then I had an tuna mayo onigiri just to try. The tuna tasted like can tuna with lots of salt water. And the cold green tea was tainted with weird taste and smell. It should have been the least to go wrong. It seemed like the ice was also used to chill raw food. I get the feeling the owner of not care anymore. I didn’t even make it half way through my dish. Sad.

We can all bet that sushi has to be one of the healthiest of meals out in this world of fast food chains. I came here for dinner one night with my family and was impressed they had vegan options. From cucumber rolls, veggie California rolls and onigiris, Japanese rice balls, as well as your desired bowl of noodles served hot or cold. One thing I noticed about the Onigiri here is that it is way thicker, bigger in size than most joints selling it. Not to mention that it’s SUPER cheap, considering each Onigiri is RM2.50! Food here is mostly below RM20, which is awesome for those who want to eat out but are on a budget. I was impressed, given my slight obsession with Japanese food. This place gets a 10⁄10 out of me.

I still remember when Niko Niko Onigiri was set up; it was small lot that looked like a hole in a wall. Didn’t quite intrigue me into checking the place out till one night when my friends and I were out late after dinner walking around aimlessly, we stumbled across the promoter giving our samples of onigiri. Onigiri is flavored rice balls wrapped in seaweed together with topping of choice, such as tuna mayo, egg, potato mayo, or can be even eaten plain. My favorite has to be the fried salmon. The friend salmon has the right amount of seasoning without being too flaky and almost disintegrates as your bite into the rice ball blending well with the crunchy seaweed. Since it was their soft launch, they didn’t have much on the menu but nevertheless the customer service was great! On top of that, the chefs were very down to earth and were very helpful helping us figure out what we wanted.

Before Niko Niko Onigiri became the successful local franchise it is today, they started out with just half a shop in Sri Petaling. At first they had a very limited menu and faced some challenges with poor service. However, they have now rallied and the shop has expanded and even combined with a sister restaurant serving Ramen. Service has improved tremendously too. Niko niko serves freshly made onigiri with the crispiest seaweed ever. There are choices of various fillings and also flavored rice that you can pick to be shaped into a triangle. My two favourites here are their Tanuki onigiri and Japanese curry rice. I like the fact that they are a simple down to earth Japanese eatery without the need to be posh to serve good food.
