Kurata may have slipped under the radar after the buzz on the opening of a celebrity owned Japanese restaurant(read: Nobu) last year but I was determined to give it a chance to prove itself. The restaurant located at Parkroyal Hotel may be a little tricky to find as there was no signboards inside the hotel indicating where exactly it was situated at. I finally found the entrance outside the hotel and was greeted with a friendly staff team. The highlight of the evening was definitely the impeccable staff service — something most Malaysian restaurants are disappointingly lacking. Tea was constantly refilled throughout my meal and plates were cleared away as soon as I was done. A dish you must order is the Kingfish Jalapeño inspired by the flavours of Malaysia. Roll a few pieces of fresh coriander with the slices of kingfish topped with fish roe and jalapeño with calamansi. What you’ll experience is a tangy spicy flavour complemented by a burst of saltiness from the fish roe. Fresh sushi is also served at Kurata though be wary and look out for the hint of wasabi hidden underneath the fish. Do also try the Kurata Sukiyaki which is great for sharing as it comes in a generous portion of assorted vegetables and quality beef strips. The authentic Japanese style of consuming sukiyaki will be to dip the beef slices in a bowl of raw egg to add richness to the flavour. Kurata also practices a strict no msg ethic, something the more health-conscious diners will gladly welcome. Prices may seem steep at a fine dining restaurant like Kurata but you’ll be compensated with fresh quality produces and balanced dishes.
