A classic building in Yokohama that houses a tea room, bar, and a French restaurant. Bashamichi Jyubankan is a must visit destination, mainly to enjoy the antique building. Built in 1967, the building itself is not so old, but it was designed in the way of Meiji and Taisho period of Japan. Whoever built this thing must have spent a fortune to design it in a such way. It reminded me of the newly refurbished Tokyo Station, where they re-created Tokyo Station 100 years ago. 1 °FCAFE: I can only review about their café, because I have not tried their French restaurant on the third floor nor their bar on second floor. I really enjoyed the feeling of being in such a cool place. You can sit back and enjoy a cup of tea as if you are living during the Meiji Period. Where else can you get this experience? I can think of a couple of places in Ginza, but only a few. Juban-Kan’s must try things are tea and biscuits(ビスカウト). However, I needed to eat something more substantial, so I ordered their curry rice. Get this, it was no ordinary curry rice. 開港カレー. You see, Japan was a very closed country during the Edo Period. The port of Yokohama was first opened to foreigners in 1859. This is when Westerners brought in Indian spices, raisins, etc.(and guns). Well, at Bashamichi Jubankan, you can eat the curry that was served during those days. Was it good? It does not matter. Experiencing such a historic curry in this amazing building was such a treat. But, for the record, let me note that I do enjoy modern day curry rice over their century old recipe. I believe in «kaizen»(continuous improvement).
