It was my last day in Japan before I headed to my next destination, but I had enough time before my departure to meet up with a friend for lunch. From Tsukishima station, exit 10 is much closer even though Google Maps directed to exit 8. Either way, walking distance from the train station is less than 5 minutes.
Iroha is located in Tsukishima, which is popular for its monjyayaki. This shop in particular is known for their mentaiko mochi cheese combination, so we definitely got one of those.
There are English menus available and visual instructions on how to cook, but no one really speaks English here so it’s best to bring a local. Since each table has its own grill, it’s very much a do-​it-​yourself cooking experience. Since neither of us has ever made it ourselves, our server walked us through the first combination.
For the mentaiko mochi cheese, you first cook the mochi and mentaiko to the side since it takes a little longer to cook. Then you place the toppings onto the grill, being very careful not to spill the broth at the bottom of the bowl. Once the cabbage mix is slightly cooked, you create a pool to pour the broth into, which will take about three divisions as you slowly mix the batter into the cabbage. Once everything is thoroughly mixed together, you mash the mentaiko into the cabbage, then top with mochi and cheese. Ta-​dah!
It’s hard to explain, but very easy to manage once you get through it once. Our second monjyayaki was a seafood combination mix and it had scallops, shrimp and beef. Very filling stuff and sort of tastes like a runnier version of okonomiyaki.
