So lets start from the basics. What is Japanese curry rice? It is curry that is normally much thicker than Indian curry served next to a bed of rice. Much like pizza, curry is a convenient food to serve at a large gathering, so when I was a child growing up in Japan, community-gathering events often treated kids with curry rice. After growing up with it, it becomes soul food for many of us. How to find Japanese curry in Tokyo: When you search for«curry», you are often led to Indian or Thai curry joints. Curry aficionados in Japan dig for true authentic Indian or Thai curry and makes fun of Japanese curry that is often made from mass-produced packaged spices. So the highest rated curry restaurants in Tokyo are not Japanese curry. The issue is, no one can clearly define the differences. There are many curries that is somewhere between authentic Indian curry and Japanese curry rice. «You are not helping me, Tomo! How do I find the best Japanese curry in Tokyo?» Try the chains. Okay, I just said the dirty word in Unilocal,«chains». Here is the thing. Curry rice is a low margin business. A mom who does not know how to grill a fish knows how to cook decent curry. It is the ultimate utility food. No one dares to start a premium Japanese curry shop charging more than 1000 Yen(unless you are a hotel restaurant). However, if it is premium Indian curry, you can easily charge more than 1000 Yen, so that is where restaurants go. Top Japanese chain Japanese curry places: Coco Ichiban Gogo Curry Curry Shop C&C King of Curry(Kare-no-osama) Of these chains, my favorite is King of Curry. It is operated by S&B Foods, maker of, you have guessed it, mass produced packaged curry! Procedure: You first need to order & pay. Curry will be in your face within 10 seconds. Wow! Pork cutlets must be pre-fried. I normally order the pork cutlet curry(910 Yen). They will ask if you want to supersize the rice. Say no. Stay away from excess carb. They will also ask if you want it mild or hot. Choose hot. It is not that hot. Bring the tray to the table and eat. Simple. When done, bring the tray to the collection shelf. Please, challenge me in naming a curry specialty shop in Tokyo that tastes better than curry here.
