Shipwreck Landing

Shipwreck is a great place to have a bit sand a drink, or two. Had lunch there today, overall it was good. Sandwiches were all good. Drinks were good. Our only issue was the French fries. It seemed as if they had been sitting awhile. This was the same for all 6 people who had them. Good fries can make or break. Service was very good.

Good place. Neat covered dining area on the water. Service is a bit negligent/​slow. Some things are better than others on the menu.
Like: gazpacho soup, fried fish platter, chocolate cake.
Meh: seafood Diablo special, Greek salad, conch fritters.
Drinks are reasonable but the food is overpriced for the area. Atmosphere is good and they have live music sometimes.

Stopped in here on our first day on the island. Easy to find and was quick to get in. It is the off season now and a lot of places are very quiet. We were only the second table when we arrived and had our choice of seating.
Service was obviously quick, and drinks came fast. Happened to arrive when it was still happy hour so there is $ 1 our beers — which were already priced well.
Ordered the blackened grouper which was great. The local hot sauce on the table was great. I think I’ll pickup a bottle.
Location was right by the water. Separated by the road, but traffic is very minimal.
Prices for food seemed high. Our first place so we can’t compare.
Overall great place, service and would recommend.

Relaxed atmosphere with a nice breeze coming off the water across the street. Friendly service with «specials» on a dry erase board. My son loved the fried chicken, and the fish and chips were great with homemade tarter sauce.

We have been there before and we’re looking forward to having lunch there again

Hole in the wall by the water but fantastic food and drinks. Did not expect the quality of food that we received.

This was my favorite restaurant on the island so much that we went there twice. Their fish n chips with a fabulous beer batter was excellent. The view is great. Service is meant to be slow as this is the laid back side of the island. To me it wasn’t overly slow but I say that as others have mentioned it in their review. I didn’t care for their conch fritters compared to Miss Lucy’s restaurant. Overall met my expectations for island food.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here, beautiful breezy day looking out to the water — great spot! We enjoyed the conch fritters as well as the Curry Nut Crusted Grouper, Jerk Chicken Sandwich, Fish & Chips and the Blackened Chicken Sandwich as well as some nice cocktails (bushwacker’s mostly). Everything was great and the staff was on it!

The East side of the island has a different feel, so do try to migrate away from Cruz Bay at least once on your trip.
This open air bar/​restaurant has a fun ambience. We went to try conch fritters and didn’t like them at all because they were very similar to hush puppies and served with cocktail sauce. We prefer a sort of ball-​crabcake-​style (less bready) with a creamy/​spicy dip… so because we had a certain expectation in mind, I removed a star.
Pina coladas were tasty and server was nice. This was a quick visit, but good overall.

First, let me preface this by saying that it’s almost a 4 star, but not quite. Solid 3.5 though.
Shipwreck is almost right on the water, but across the street. The view is still pretty great. The menu doesn’t have much variety, but it does focus on seafood. Of the 6 meals our group got (one being salad with a side of shrimp) basically everyone thought it was just okay, or one step away from being great.
On the other hand, the fish and chips is pretty awesome. Sure, fish and chips can be gotten anywhere and you fry a lot of the flavor out of the fish, but with huge pieces and perfectly cooked fillets, it makes for the best thing on the menu.
Wait. I take that back. The best thing on the menu is actually dessert. Whether you get the cheesecake or the key lime pie, the dessert here is really quite good.
The service is also fantastic, as is the live music. The music is kinda in a corner and not overbearing, but still fun. There’s no rush, but I think our party was out of there within 75 minutes, which was nice.
I know everything is more expensive on St. John, but for the same price there are better places to eat. On top of that, nothing (barring the fried fish) is really that exciting or delicious. Still, it’s a pretty good place to grab food.

food was out of this world! ordered the seafood gumbo dish (special that evening) and was highly impressed! the dish was made up of clams, shrimp, fish, rice, calamari and a few other seasonings — could not stop talking about during the rest of my visit. staff and service were exceptional, food was rushed out, along with drinks. highly recommend this dig if in Coral Bay!

Relaxed atmosphere & good food. Fish and chips and the mahi soft taco were both delicious. Delicious and a great value compared to all the other over priced restaurants around.

Shipwreck Landing is a Coral Bay staple. The shrimp appetizer after a day on the beach is amazing. Friendly staff. It is expensive but so is everything else in the island — get used to it. Also a local hangout. Very casual place with great views. Solid choice for the less traveled side of the island.

Entrees were delicious, the seared tuna was especially good. Nice view, good drink selection, almost everything was perfect … except the service. Knocking off one star because the tables around us got amazing service but we were ignored by the other waitress serving us. They got 4 – 5 check-​ins from their waitress for every time ours stopped by, and we weren’t offered water or bread. I’m used to the islands being slower but this was a bit much.

When in Coral Bay stop in and ask for Dennis. He is a connoisseur of Rum. He has a good selection to try. If in doubt what you admit he is willing to give you a sampling. Food is very good and the best path is the friendly edit staff. It has a nice view of the bay and is an open air venue. Good shopping area next door.

Fun and casual setting. Out for a ride on the motor bike, you can pop in for a drink and some good food. Cute little shops right next to this restaurant for fun shopping. Oh… Shipwreck’s also sells Valley Doll sauce… now that’s some nice sauce!

I like the atmosphere and looked forward to returning this year, but was disappointed by the food. The prices were quite high and the quality did not match. My husband’s fish dish was tasty, but my salad was very over dressed and my fish a bit overcooked. The conch fritters, a must try at most St. John locations, were too much bread, not enough fish, and served with a very boring cocktail sauce. Also, the seats are terribly uncomfortable, very small wooden stools with no back. Overall I just walked away unsatisfied, so we won’t be back on our next trip to St. John. Maybe for drinks but not for dinner.

Great meals! I prefer to come here for dinner, but lunch works well after a snorkel, too! The only downside is parking — depending on the side you’re coming from, take the first spot you see, whether it is across the road in the small parking lot, or right at the restaurant. Also, double-​parking usually goes over pretty well — just yell out the color of the car and the owner will move it for you.
Plus, the view is pretty great, and often there is a nice breeze. If it’s raining, they have some protective tarp walls that they will throw down, and it doesn’t take away from the experience one bit.

Coral Bay is less populated, yes. And fine dining (finer than Skinny Legs) is harder to find on this side of the island. Take that for what it is — you either like that nobody is on this side of the island or you don’t. If you like it, well, that’s because there’s not a lot over on this side to attract people.
There are a few places to chose from, and Shipwreck is one of them. They’ve been around for some time, and I can count on their consistency. I can count on pretty views. I can count on a piece of fish over some greens, and I can count on a slice of locals (drunks at the bar). But that’s about it for me, folks.
Why is seafood so darned expensive on this island? I don’t understand.

I love this place on multiple levels. But mostly for the location and atmosphere. It’s tucked away from the populated areas of the island enough to feel removed, genuine, and full of regulars. I’ve always found the bartenders to be super down-​to-​earth and friendly, and the food is competent. Not spectacular, but never disappointing. And the prices are reasonable by island standards.
I’m a semi-​frequent visitor of STJ, and this is one place I’ve never missed. Really, it’s just another great place to get the St. John experience. Have a drink outside and take in the breeze. Oh, and pick up some of the Valley Doll hot sauce they now sell. Great stuff.
