Ring of Kerry

This is a must when in Ireland. There is no way you can come the IE and not see this amazing beauty. The ring of kerry drive is amazing. There are many tour bus and day trip options, however we had the change to drive it on our own in a rental car. This allowed us to stop and for as we pleased. But leave with a full tank and expect the drive to be a long one. Start early! The less people and buses on the road the better. Plus you will see wild deer if you start before they are all scared off. Although on maps the ring looks small, hahaha, you have one heck of a drive ahead for you so bring snacks but drink light. There is so much amazing thinks to see and you will really be amazed by the topography of Ireland. You will see things you never imagined. Sheep! Yes there really are sheep on the roads so watch out for them and other drivers who are taking in the sites. Beautiful and one of the most memorable parts of my trip.

The ring of Kerry was nice, but if I was to do it again I would skip and and add time somewhere else. It was pretty but not as stunning as some of the other places we visited such as the tip of Baltimore or The Dingle Peninsula.

Eine wunderbar schöné Straße am Meer entlang, die man sich keinesfalls entgehen lassen sollte. Man sollte sich allerdings Zeit nehmen, um diese Strecke genießen zu können.
Denn immer wieder lauert ein naturekler Leckerbissen hinter der nächsten Kurve, so dass man mehrfach abrupt abbremsen möchte um zu staunen und zu schauen. Das sollte man ob des nachfolgeverkehrs allerdings lassen und lieber eine der vielen Parkbuchten ansteuern, um dann ausgiebig zu bewundern und zu betrachten.
Viele kleine Orte laden mit Cafés zum verweilen und abschalten ein.
idealerweise fährt man den Ring von Süden nach Norden um so direkt am Meer fahren zu können, um nicht noch eine Fahrbahn dazwischen zu haben.
Wem der Ring of Kerry gefällt, der sollte auch unbedingt den Ring auf der Dingle-​Halbinsel fahren! :)

Die Schönste Straße der Welt, so die Iren, führt einen tatsächlich an so einigen sehr schönen Plätzen vorbei, durch kleine, alte Dörfer und an tolle Küstengebiete. Typisch irisch ist alles etwas rauer, Felsen und mal bessere, mal schlechtere Straßen säumen den Weg.
Alles in allem auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert, wenn man gerade in der Nähe ist. Für ungeübte Autofahrer könnte es sich als etwas haarsträubend erweisen, dass die Iren gerne schmale Straßen mit Tempolimits von 80km/​h belegen und einem dann auch Reisebusse mit solch einer Geschwindigkeit entgegenkommen das ganze natürlich bei Linksverkehr.
Es gibt angenehmerweise immer mal wieder Haltebuchten an den Seiten und Möglichkeiten das Auto stehen zu lassen und die Natur zu genießen.

Naja war schon schön, aber die Fahrt um die Dingle Halbinsel war viiieel interessanter mit mehr Sehenswürdigkeiten

Well worth the effort to make this tour. Beautiful lanscapes and charming villages including; Killarney, Muckross House, Torc Waterfalls, The Gap of Dunloe and Ladies View. It can be done in one day but it’s nicer to stay in the area and explore.

Siempre que me preguntan sobre Irlanda digo que lo más bonito es, sin duda alguna, la costa suroeste, con las penínsulas de Beara, Dingle, y el Ring of Kerry. Para disfrutarlo hay que ir en bicicleta y estar un par de días, o en coche de alquiler o propio, para recorrer todos los lugares recónditos, las bellezas naturales, los pueblos singulares. Es la Irlanda de ensueño, la de película, existe todavía, casi virgen. Una belleza sin igual.

This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its a treat to drive, walk or hitch-​hiker around. Don’t forget to visit Valentia Island while you are here. You really won’t regret it !

A beautiful tour through the peninsula Kerry, where you can find wonderful untouched landscapes and many places of interest! I can highly recommend the Killarney National Park, the Blackwater Pier, the village Sneem, the village Portmagee and Staigue Fort.

wie schon meine Vorschreiber bemerkten: Eine der schönsten Ecken Irlands und für mich der beginn einer großen Liebe zu diesem land. Bisher waren die Toscana, das Aosta Tal und der Genfer See sowie der Vierwaldstätter See meine liebsten Ecken. Aber Irland hat mit seinen rauen Ecken und vor allem seinen Menschen mich ganz in seinen Bann gezogen.

The Ring of Kerry follows the ‘bulge’ west ward of Co. Kerry, and at times it is truly breath taking.
It is so very green, many more trees than in West Cork, and sheep! Sheep everywhere.
Thus it’s not hard to realise why one of the biggest trades here is spinning and making woollen goods. And how!
One of my mistakes is not having invested in a good Irish woollen garment. There is such a range and variety, and yet something about them is hallmark Irish. That je né sais quoi…
Is it the patterns?
So apart from avoiding sheep, the one drawback is the quantity of coaches carrying hoards of tourists. Sometimes the roads are so narrow or twisty you wonder if the coaches will ever get through…
The best part, one one of many, is sitting in a pub or bar, having eaten something local, and sip some wine or Guiness and soak in the view, the people and the accent. At first I could barely understand a Kerryman, but you get used to it and like all Irish accents, like the rain there, it is soft.
One time we stayed in Sneem, the hospitality is true to the country. Breakfast is the biggest meal of the day, and endless cups of tea. If a child is with you, you almost need to get a tin opener to leave the place. The Irish adore children.
Kerry is somewhere that has neverending exploration. A hamlet here, a farm there, suddenly a cove or mountain, woods. Just don’t get lost in the dark. No streetlights. No signposts. Maybe some confusing signposts, with nothing more for a lot of miles, and then one that doesn’t mention your hoped for destination.
It’s Ireland.

Ich kann mich meinem Vorredner nr anschließen. Wenn man in Irland ist sollte man den Ring of Kerry auf jeden Fall mitnehmen. Hier findet man neben unberührten Landschaften auch wunderbare kleine Dörfer, in denen man noch die typische irische Lebensart erfahren kann. Als wir dort waren hatten wir ein Wohnmobil dabei und konnten so an jedem beliebigen Punkt verweilen. Doch auch Gästehäuser gibt es einige, sodass man auch mit einem normalen PKW gut zurecht kommen sollte. Besonderes Highlight für mich waren die Cliffs of Moher, etwas weiter nördlich am Ostufer. (

Meine zweite (un)heimliche Liebe neben Frankreich die grüné Insel, sprich Irland.
Seitdem mein großer Sohn dort seinen Zivi gemacht hat und wir ihn dort einmal besucht haben, könnte ich mir absolut vorstellen, dort zu leben: Wunderbare Landschaften, Weite und Raum, äußerst gastfreundliche und offene Mitmenschen, interessante historische Stätten, mitreißende Musik, Gallic Football, rauchfreie Pubs, das Gefühl von Zeit und Ruhe und trotzdem keine Langeweile in dieses Land muss man sich einfach verlieben.
Meine absolute Lieblingsgegend der RING OF KERRY — die wohl bekannteste Ringstrasse Irlands.
Der Ring of Kerry ist eine 170 km lange Panoramaküstenstraße in der Grafschaft Kerry im Südwesten Irlands und kostet — im Auto gerade mal einen ganzen Tag.
Die gut ausgebaute Straße führt hoch über dem Meer an der wilden Felsküste der Iveragh Halbinsel entlang. Hin und wieder empfehlen sich Abstecher auf einer Gebirgsstraße ins Innere der Halbinsel — vorbei an Steinwällen, Weiden und jungen Kiefernwäldern. Allenthalben bieten sich attraktive Ausblicke und Fotomotive. Aber man fährt auch an kilometerlangen Sandstränden entlang. Für Campingfreunde es hat auch einige Campingplätze direkt am Strand.
Fährt man von Killarney aus einen Ringkurs, muss man ca. 180 km zurücklegen, ohne Abstecher selbstverständlich. Von diesen 180 km verlaufen knapp 120 nahe der Küste, fast ständig in Sichtweite von Wasser.
Wir haben uns auf den südlichen und westlichen Abschnitt konzentriert, weil dieser am schönsten ist. Die stark zerklüftete, stellenweise dramatisch abfallende und doch weithin einsichtbare Küste ist absolut sehenswert. Dazu immer wieder grandiose Bergpanoramen. Vor allem die Berge im Westen sind bis zu 650m hoch.
Empfehlenswert ist es, außerhalb der Hochsaison dorthin zu fahren. Wir waren beispielsweise in der ersten Maiwoche dort und waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt nahezu die einzigsten Touristen und hatten aber schon Temperaturen um 20 25 °C. Also optimale Bedingungen.
Spätestens nächstes Jahr muss es wieder Irland werden! Dann vielleicht aber die Ostküste, die auch beeindruckend sein soll.
