Years ago I had heard that the surname Furlong was prevalent in county Wexford and that Enniscorthy had lots of them. During my recent trip to Ireland, one of my missions was to find an Irish pub with the name Furlong and it didn’t take me long once in Enniscorthy to find Patrick Furlong’s place. Patrick has got to be 95 years old but he still runs this VERY quaint and sadly run-down nick-nac shop which doubles as an Irish Pub. Patrick was the nicest guy and was genuinely interested in the story of how my family had emigrated to Chicago in the 1870’s. Many of his own family had gone to Australia during the potato famine. I had brought my daughter with me and we spent a good 2 hours with him, drinking a few Guinness, and hearing all about his family, business, and life. It was really fabulous to meet him and was one of my favorite moments during my 2-week trip. Visit Patrick if you happen to be in Enniscorthy and check his place out. You probably won’t find any treasures in his wares but you will see a genuine old-style irish pub and meet a really classy guy.
