The Ha’penny Bridge

Proposed to my girlfriend at this bridge and she said yes. So this bridge gets five stars!

It is a white cast iron footbridge. Not handicap accessible as there are a few stairs. Well lit. Quick way to cross the river.

The Ha’penny bridge crosses the river and allows pedestrian access between north and south sides. The name apparently comes from the toll charged (half a penny) when opened as it replaced several ferries. Today it stands as grand as ever in a stark white color with crossing lattices above pedestrians. It cannot be missed when exploring the city on foot and the walkways on both sides of the river are quite nice for a relaxed stroll or even a run.

This short bridge is a handy way to cross the Liffey & get over to the Temple Bar District. A bit of a landmark that is also a convenient conveyance, and even lovelier at night, when lit up.

On the south bank a small walk way will take you straight into the «bohemian» Temple Bar area.

Es uno de los símbolos más importantes de la ciudad, uniendo la parte de Temple Bar con el centro de compras de la ciudad. Uno de los puentes más antiguos y su nombre viene de que antes costaba medio penique (Half penny) cruzarlo, y claro, todos conocemos la pronunciación irlandesa. Embellece en gran parte el gris paisaje de los días nublados de la capital irlandesa, y es inevitable hacerse una foto o dentro o al lado del puente.
Suele haber mendigos pidiendo, pero no hacen nada y son tranquilos.

Die Halfpenny Bridge, etwas unscheinbareres, aber ganz besonderes.
Wenn man in Dublin einen Altstadtspaziergang entlang des Flusses Liffey machen will, dann kommt man auch an den interessanten, zum Teil auch recht alten Brücken vorbei.
Zu den bekannteren zählen dabei die Father Matthew Bridge an einer passend Lower Briddge Street heißenden Straße, oder auch der wichtigsten, der O’Connell Bridge, an der ebenso genannten O’Connell Street. Hier landeten schon seinerzeit die Wikinger, die mit ihren Langbooten die Liffey rauf kamen.
Eine schon wegen ihres ebenfalls etwas seltsamen Namens Halfpenny Bridge, fällt da ebenfalls ins Auge. Sie liegt halbwegs zwischen den genannten beiden anderen Brücken, und ist eigentlich für den Fahrzeugverkehr nicht geeignet, da sie eine kleinere Fußgängerbrücke ist.
Schon was ihren Namen angeht, wurde und wird sie gemein und mißachtend stiefmütterlich behandelt. Alt Halfpenny Bridge wäre sie ein Auslaufmodell, denn die Pennys und die Halfpennys gibt es seit Jahren nicht mehr.
Erschwerend kommt dann auch noch hinzu, dass sie keiner ehrlich und beim vollen Namen anspricht, was ja auch schon etwas wäre. Hier sagt jeder nur, etwas herablassend, ‘Ha’penny’ und spart sich den Rest, die Insider wissen ohnehin wer und was gemeint ist. Doch noch mal zur Sache.
Die Ha’penny ist eine der ältesten, eine der bekanntesten Brücken der Hauptstadt, sie hat sich diesen Platz wohl verdient. Sie liegt, wie gesagt, unterhalb der O’Connell Street und führt direkt frontal auf die Temple Bar Area zu.
Und was gibt es sonst noch über sie zu sagen? Nicht viel weltbewegendes, außer, dass sie eine typische alte Fußgängerbrücke ist, mit einer Vielzahl recht viktorianisch aussehender Geländer.
In der Mitte der Brücke gibt es dann noch einen Straßenlaternenpfahl mit einer schönen, alten, recht malerischen Laterne.
Dennoch, diese Brücke hat etwas, so eine eigene, anheimelnde Romantik, deshalb wird sie auch von vielen Liebespaaren bevorzugt. Auch geht das Gerücht, dass die zwei, die sich in der Mitte, unter dem Schein der Laterne, küßen, sich damit versichern können, dass ihre Liebe ewig hält.
Ob diese Magie bei allen Klappt und wirklich ewig hält weiß ich nicht, bin ja auch allein hierher gelaufen, und habe kein hübsches Mädchen dabei gehabt, das ich hätte küssen können, nicht mal unsere allerseits geschätzte Molly Malone. Bei der, so denke ich, hätte die Magie wohl gewirkt, schade also, dass wir sie nur noch als Denkmal erleben dürfen.

Erreichbar ist sie, wie bekannt, für alle und jeden, ihr Aussehen sollte man eher schlicht nennen, sie zu betreten ist, bekanntlich kostenfrei, neben dem wenig beachtlichen Geländer aus viktorianischer Zeit gibt es eben hauptsächlich, mitten auf der Brücke, die magische Laterne, die auch so recht hpbsch anzusehen ist.
Und kindergeeignet dürfte die Brücke, Geländer sind ja vorhanden, auch sein.

This beautiful bridge always makes me stop and take in the beauty of my adopted city. It is one of the instantly recognisable landmarks of Dublin. It is made out of iron and there are 3 lamps on it which give it such an old-​worldly air. In the evenings when the lamps shine, I think it is one of the most romantic sights ever. The name of the bridge comes from the pontage to cross it which was half a penny. Stepping onto this bridge connects me instantly to old Dublin with all its charm and I am sure it will for you too.

No visit to Dublin is complete without taking a stroll across the Ha’penny Bridge in my opinion, especially if you’re staggering out of nearby Temple Bar at night.
Built in 1816, it is named because of the toll that was once paid by those wishing to cross the river. It’s official name is actually the Liffey Bridge.
