«Do you have a website?» I asked the soft-spoken French woman as she bagged my selection of frilled muffins. «Oh, no.» «Do you have a business card or a pamphlet?» I prompted, hoping for a little help. «No,» she said with a shy smile, «Nothing like that.» Argh! Then how will I ever find the jewel that is The Baking House should they ever up stick and leave the Point Village Market?! I mean, now that I’m hooked on that apricot loaf I’ve got no choice but to follow them like a lost puppy. While the PVM’s baked-goods stall selection is vast, to be frank it’s all very familiar. I’ve been spoiled for choice when it comes to my carb intake in the City Centre, and famers markets have always been a go-to for yeast-risen sweets with organic pedigree. Sure, I’ve supped my share of gluten-free treats but none have knocked me over quite like the unassuming fruit bread I picked up today from The Baking House’s stall. It wasn’t cheap, ringing up at 4 Eurons, and along with His pick of two muffins at 2.50 each, well… they’re most definitely treats in every sense of the word. Still, that dense, chewy and fruity bread was worth every penny. And what’s more, they’ve got savoury stuff on offer as well. If you’re in the PVM next weekend make sure to stop in, you never know when they’ll just up and vanish.
