St Audoen’s Church

Nicht weit vom Touristenmagnet Christchurch Cathedral, nur einen
Steinwurf von ihr entfernt, findet man in der High Street die oft zu Unrecht
übersehene Kirche St. Audoen’s. Benannt ist sie nach dem
Schutzheiligen der Normannen, dem heiligen Quen, oder Audoen.
St. Audoen’s ist die einzige mittelalterliche Pfarrkirche Dublins, in
der große Teile der alten Originalstruktur weiterhin als Teil der
heutigen Kirche genutzt werden. Errichtet wurde diese Pfarrkirche
zwischen 1181 und 1212, also zu der Zeit, in der Dublin und seine
weitere Umgebung, das sogenannte «Pale» bereits von den Engländern
beherrscht wurde. Daher auch die Benennung der Pfarrkirche.
St.Audeon’s war im späten Mittelalter und in der frühen Neuzeit
einer der wohlhabendsten Pfarrbezirke und die Kirche der
Handwerkergilden. Ihre Siegel können heute noch an einer
der Kirchenwände besichtigt werden.
Teilweise wurde die Kirche renoviert. Eine Wand des Kirchenschiffes
zeigt aber noch die alte Struktur.
Ein Blickfang sind die sehr schönen Buntglasfenster.
In der Krypta kann der Sarkophag von Rolandus Fitzeustace de
Portlester und seiner Frau besichtigt werden. Er gehörte im 15.
Jahrhundert zu den herausragenden politischen Persönlichkeiten
Irlands. Er war zunächst «Lord Lieutenant» und dann Lordkanzler
von Irland, und damit zugleich örtlicher Vertreter des englischen
Königs.
Wer sich also nicht nur über die «touristischen Highlights»
Christchurch und St. Patrick’s Cathedral informieren möchte,
wer auch andere Kirchen Dublins erkunden möchte, dem bietet
sich hier ein lohnendes Objekt.

I traveled to St. Audeon’s church in Dublin Ireland from the United States to see where my 11^th great grandfather John Caldwell, and my great grandmother Mary were buried in the 1600’s inside the church. It is the oldest remaining medieval church left in Dublin at the age of 824 years having been built in the year 1190.
The church is simply amazing! I was astonished how intact the original structure was considering how old it is and also what it has been through in its history. The only substantial damage was to the roof in the Portlester chapel area. The medieval masonry work is remarkable. The surrounding gardens are amazingly beautiful and the staff that run the church were extremely nice and very helpful in my search of historical data. When walking through the church you can easily feel and picture how it would have been to live in the times of knights and kings.
Its a definite historical must see when in Ireland!!!

I visited this place during culture night 2013 in mid September. As indicated in my prior review, this is a place which I had wanted too see for quite some time and missed the last opportunity as they were closed in the winter time.
This was a very cool medieval church with so much history. I highly recommend a stop to this place. How many churches date back so far? The existing church for 1190 and even that was built on the site of a 7^th century church.
They have old carved stones and statues throughout and I like the cutaway of the old Dunlin street from hundreds of years before. The stone in the back that people rubbed for good luck is also good to see. A highlight was also the monument which appears to be a husband and wife side by side.
Some of the other reviews mentioned this is free to see. That would be an amazing thing considering Christ Church and St Patricks do charge admission. I high recommend a visit before they close up for the winter. Also they should really consider opening year round if possible.

Well worth visiting and free! This is a medieval gem and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Also go to the like named Polish church next door. It reminds you of how much Dublin has changed over the years. One of the funny things about Ireland is that almost all of the notable historic churches are Anglican for reasons I assume most people understand. By the way, the picture at the bottom on the left– shown by Unilocal– is the Polish Church not the Anglican church.

The keltic church is strong here. Dating from the middle ages, it was believed to be a kind of head stone of a religious cleric but it is the legend that has grown up around it, that’s most interesting. Despite being the victim of theft, strangely disappearing on a number of occasions to God knows where, it has still mysteriously turned up in St Audeon’s. an active community

As tourists poured into the campy trap that was Christ Church Cathedral just up the street, my boyfriend and I thought we’d take a look at this place instead. It seemed simple and far older than any church I’d seen walking around, and the gentleman outside was very sweet and encouraging for us to take a tour. After all… it’s free! It’s easily self-​guided, though you’re more than welcome to request a guided tour from one of the kind, hilarious staff members.
The church itself is rich with history. I was impressed with all of the boards to read about the history, from it’s original size to how it functions today. There’s even a touching stone in a back corner that you can rub for luck — it was very well-​worn and I wondered if I was touching a rock that someone a thousand years ago had reached for. Everything was being maintained beautifully, and again, I can’t thank the staff enough for a great time.
If you want tourist trap, go to the faux Viking display of the church next door. If you want real people telling you real history, I can’t recommend this church enough. It was certainly one of the highlights of my trip to Dublin!

St Audoen’s Church is the only remaining medieval parish church in Dublin. It is dedicated to St Ouen the 7^th century bishop of Rouen and patron saint of Normandy. The Guild Chapel of St Anne houses an award-​winning exhibition on the importance of St Audoen’s Church in the life of the medieval city. Although what award it has won is any ones guess as I found the exhibition to be small and uninteresting but you can see the part of the church still in use by the Church of Ireland as a parish church. You cab also view 17^th century memorials and a 15^th century effigial tomb, the stunning stone walls and organ and the beautiful gardens and views. It is free to get it so that is a bonus and the staff are so friendly, helpful, informative and funny! They really make the place special and you can ask them for a guided tour, but the place is quite small so really one is not needed. They have written information as well in lots of different languages. So this is a cool little place to visit if you are passing by!

This church is actually the oldest Parish church in Dublin; has the quirky coincidence of being next door to another St Audeon’s which is Catholic. Anyway… It has a very nice park within its grounds and to the rear, one can see part of the Old City Wall of Dublin — from medieval times. Of course, it is centred in the heart of Old Dublin, at the juncture of the Liberties etc. But housed in the Church — in the porch area — is a very unusual artefact which few people know about. It is called ‘The Lucky Stone’ — a rival of the very famous Blarney Stone! But this is a stone with a difference! churches which offers you a guided tour by a friendly, informative guide, of its site — a part of hidden Dublin, a stone’s throw from Christchurch.
