O’Connell Bridge

O’Connell Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Liffey in Dublin, and joining O’Connell Street to D’Olier Street, Westmoreland Street and the South Quays. Just before you cross it you will see a great statute of Daniel O’Connell the «Liberator» of Ireland. The bridge allows for great pictures of the River Liffey and O’Connell street but unfortunately panhandlers seem to congregate here.

A bridge that’s wider than it is long? How crazy … but true. 45 meters long and 50 meters wide
The main city center traffic bridge connects Lower O’Connell Street in the north with Westmoreland Street in the south over the River Liffey.
The original bridge (named Carlisle Bridge for the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland — Frederick Howard, 5^th Earl of Carlisle) was designed by James Gandon, and built between 1791 and 1794.
Walk across it, take some pictures off of it, take some picture of it … enjoy the wide bridge.

This is yet another addition to the city courtasy of James Gandon. The Keystones over the arches are of the same sculptor who made the «Rivers of Ireland» series that adorn the Customs House (Also Gandon) and are worth a look see.
Near the millenium some gobeen in the government made a right mess when they decided to put a big countdown clock in the river. who would have thought a giant clock is very hard to make waterproof?! and that boats would need to use the river?!
Silly people… lovely bridge… lovely fat bridge…
oh and if you time it right you can cross the pedestrian crossing at one end… cross the bridge. then the other crossing without ever stopping. how handy

You don’t really look at O’Connell bridge in an aesthetic manner most of the time, you mainly just look at it as a well… road. With a water bit beneath.
When you do look at it though, you’ll see that its actually a really cool bridge, that oozes a real sense of history. Also, fun fact: Its wider than it is long!

O’Connell Bridge was originally made from rope and could only hold one man at a time! It was replaced with a wooden bridge in 1801 and then the current concrete one in 1863 and it is the only traffic bridge in Europe that is wider than it is long!

I’m surprised that no-​one has reviewed this already, I would have thought that it was one of Dublin’s more notable landmarks.
Designed by James Gandon (for shame if you have never heard of him), O’Connell bridge was built in it’s distinctive humpback manner in order to facilitate the Guinness boats that travelled between St James’s Gate and the docks. And given that O’Connell St is one of the wider main thoroughfares in Europe, O’Connell Bridge had to be very wide to match it, resulting in it being one of the only bridges in the world that is wider than it is long (if you don’t believe me, have a look for yourself).
