Meeting Place Hags with the Bags

A terrible nickname for a lovely statue of two larger than life women (who are patently not hags) stopping for a bit of a chat and a sit down. Note to Dublin wags: it may rhyme, but that doesn’t necessarily make it right.
Appropriately, many weary shoppers use the statues edges as a makeshift bench, which is fair enough as the city has a dearth of seating areas.

As previously stated on Unilocal,I love this city’s statues. The Meeting Place statue, also affectionately known as the Hags with Bags, is another great sculpture that makes Dublin special.
Built in 1988 by Jakki McKenna, the statues capture a slice of everyday life in the city centre. The city centre is the place where every one does their shopping. People from all parts of the city take the bus into town to get a bargain and look at all the pretty new things.
The two bronze middle aged women are shown resting on a bench on Liffey Street. One of them has an Arnotts bag, the actual department store being up the street.
Unlike other statues that are serious in nature (I’m thinking of all the immortalized politicians on O’Connell Street, this particular statue is light-​hearted as it celebrates the ordinary and mundane.

So Dublin has lots of statues and monuments all over its fine city. Nothing unusual about that for a capital but us Dubs love to give these fine works of art comic names. There are many examples all over the place, the Molly Malone Statue is the Tart with the Cart and the O’Connell Street Spire is the stiletto in the ghetto but my favourite on is the bronze statue of two women shoppers sat on a bench with all their shopping bags outside the Blarney Woollen Mills which we affectionately call the Hags with the Bags!
