Spectacular! Stirring! Sweeping! Sensational! These are words viewers and critics alike, are expressing after recently viewing the new two-​hour TV special, «Rhythm of the Dance» — now airing exclusively on Public Television in the United States.
Taking two years to film the ambitious project, Winmill Films, a California-​based production company, travelled far and wide throughout the Emerald Isle, capturing live dance performances at rarely seen locales and historic sights. Shooting at over 38 scenic locations, this stunning television program premiered on St. Patrick’s Day in major US cities as a two-​hour prime time Pledge Drive Special for Public Television. In addition, the live energy of the touring stage show, was also captured by shooting a performance with multi-​cameras, at the Theater de Tamboer in Amsterdam! The locations and stage footage were combined and woven into a mesmerizing visual and unique Irish experience.
«Rhythm of the Dance» is presented to the television viewer in a new, ground-​breaking way, that allows the full experience and essence of Irish dance and its origins. Based on historic Celtic history, the show is fused with new original Irish music, classic Irish songs by The Young Irish Tenors, and traditional dance choreographed by the brilliant, Doireann Carney. Remaining faithful to the geographical roots of each dance, the TV special educates the viewer through dance, while entertaining them with stunning visuals of spectacular locations. The live show has been re-​imagined, creating seamless transitions from stage to location — from castle ruins dating to 500 AD; the Irish seawall on remote Innishbofin isle; The Lost City of Clonmacnoise; and St. Patrick’s Rock of Cashel, to the scenic Village of Enniskerry; St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin; Kylemore Abbey; and to Cromwell’s Ruins perched on the edge of a sea cliff. Or seeing a lovely peasant lassie sweeping outside her seaside cottage, as she seamlessly appears on stage, surrounded by a dozen broom-​wielding lads.
This mesmerizing television event, stars dancers Michael Byrne, Nicola Kennedy, and Emma O’Sullivan, The Young Irish Tenors — Paul Gough, Rory Musgrave, and Duncan Brickenden, and Conor Smyth, Fiona Stone, Leslie McDonough, and Sean Regan. Brave performers who withstood rain, sleet, freezing cold temperatures, powerful winds, and fog — all for the sake of art and entertainment
The National Dance Company of Ireland’s tour support and worldwide audience base (America, Scandinavia, China, Greece, Romania, Amsterdam, and Russia, to name a few, is sure to be a precedent-​setting pledge special for Public Television in the United States. This EMMY worthy special, was directed by award-​winning Hollywood helmer, Chip Miller, who also produced with Kieran Cavanaugh, President of The National Dance Company Of Ireland, and was Produced for PBS by legendary Television Producer, Terrel Cass.
