James Joyce Statue

Heute ist der 16. Juni. In Dublin wird er als Bloomsday bezeichnet.
Warum? Weil der irische Schriftsteller James Joyce den Protagonisten
seines Buches «Ulysses», den Anzeigenakquisiteur Leopold Bloom,
einen ganzen Tag durch Dublin laufen lässt. Joyce-​Fans aus aller Welt
treffen sich seit 1954 am Bloomsday in Dublin und gehen die Strecke
ab, die auch Leopold Bloom am 16. Juni 1904 gelaufen ist.
Für mich ist der Bloomsday Grund genug, heute eine Bewertung über
das James Joyce Memorial zu schreiben.
Von der Existenz dieses Denkmals wussten wir nichts, leider nicht,
denn wir glaubten immer, bestens über die irische Hauptstadt informiert
zu sein. Zufällig stießen wir auf diese Statue, nur weil wir in der dahinter
liegenden Filiale der irischen Imbisskette Kylemore eine Kleinigkeit
zu Mittag essen wollten.
Und da stand er auf einmal vor uns. James Joyce, in Metall gegossen,
aber nahezu lebensecht. Die Beine über Kreuz, auf seinen Stock gestützt
und leicht zur Seite geneigt. Die linke Hand in der Hosentasche, den
großen Hut auf dem Kopf, der leicht aufwärts gerichtet ist. Das
Kinn etwas hochmütig vorgestreckt. Genauso, wie man Joyce von
vielen Fotos kennt. Absolut lebensecht. Leider gelang es uns nicht,
den Namen des Künstlers zu ermitteln, der diese Statue entwarf
und in die Tat umsetzte. Bei dem Versuch erfuhren wir allerdings,
daß diese Statue bei den spitzzüngigen Dublinern einen ganz eigenen
Namen hat. Bei den Dublinern heißt sie «The prick with the stick»,
zu deutsch: Der Stecher mit dem Stock.
James Joyce, geboren am 2. Februar 1882, war bei den Dublinern
seiner Zeit extrem unbeliebt. Obwohl lange von Jesuiten erzogen, war
seine Grundeinstellung sehr antikatholisch. Zudem lebte er mit seiner
Gefährtin Nora Barnacle lange in wilder Ehe. Fast 37 Jahre seines
Lebens verbrachte Joyce im Ausland. In Triest, Paris und Zürich.
Mit seinen Werken, hauptsächlich mit «Finnegans Wake», mehr aber
noch mit dem 1922 erschienenen «Ulysses», wurde er zu einem der
wichtigsten Vertreter der literarischen Moderne. Er war der Erste,
der die bereits vorhandene literarische Technik des inneren Monologs
und des Stream of Consciousness, des Bewusstseinsstromes, konsequent
anwendete.
Wer mehr für den Film als Literatur übrig hat, dem sei gesagt, daß
Joyce 1909 das «Volta» eröffnete, das erste Kino in Irland.

This is the statue of the famous Irish poet and writer James Joyce and it is known as «The Prick with the Stick». Who does not know him or (if you live in Dublin) has never seen his head covered with a wool hat when the wintertime is very cold? The statue is life-​sized and has been one of the most seen attractions in Dublin for a long time because of the legacy of this poet to the worldwide literature. The thing is that this statue is not anywhere but right in the heart of the city so thousands of people pass by it daily and you always see someone taking a picture right next to it. When I pass by it I always feel like a «dark-​blue rain-​drenched flower»…

I went to Ireland with my daughter so, we wanted to see a lot of wonderful statues whilst there. There certainly is a lot of them. Each with a wonderful history behind it as well. On earl Street is James Joyce. Standing in a casual manner as you might except when he was alive as well. It is a life size Statue that has been very well done.
It was made very sturdy as well, as it would have to be from everyone touching it, swinging on it and rubbing it. Not to mention the weather, the rain and the wind blowing all the time.
He does well, Old James standing with a smile. One leg crossed over and his hat on. Great to look at visit.

I went to get myself a pint soon after.
I love Dublin and wish I could afford to live there!

Right on Earl Street stands the glorious James Joyce. A must-​see and must-​take-​a-​picture-​with statue.

Always there and forever watching the crowd go by.
One of the greatest writers in Irish history. His masterpieces will stand the test of time .

Mais de toute façon, une visite de Dublin implique OBLIGATOIREMENT d’aller saluer James Joyce et sa statue au beau milieu des passants: son air désabusé faisant face aux vitrines promotionnelles des magasins à deux pas vaut vraiment le look !

A lovely bronze statue of one our most beloved and yet incomprehensible authors, set appropriately enough in the «heart of the rowl» on North Earl Street, where Dubliners are literally at his feet, sometimes eating a meatball sandwich from the Subway across the way.
This statue is so popular that it has even spawned an imitator on Grafton Street — a man who dresses up not only like James Joyce, but like a statue of James Joyce. He sometimes bangs his stick to get you to give money to him, but you can walk unmolested by the Jim on this street.

I’ve been on a bit of a statue buzz lately. It’s a good thing that I’m in Dublin because this city is statue crazy. A walk down O’Connell Street will prove my point.
One of my favourite statues is the one of James Joyce on North Earl Street. Called affectionately by some Dubliners as «The Prick with a Stick», it gets ridiculed a lot. I just love it though because he was immortalized with such a jolly stance. It looks like he’s resting on his cane as he watches the street from under his wide brim hat.
The statue by Marjorie FitzGibbon was commissioned by local businesses in the 1990s and really adds some sparkle to the shopping district.
