Famine Sculpture

Une des sculptures les plus fortes de Dublin. Une oeuvre chargée d’émotion qui rappelle les dures périodes passées du pays. A voir absolument !

As you walk along the Liffey, perhaps to make your way to the Jeanie Johnston to learn about time spent by those escaping Ireland during the Great Hunger, you might encounter a series of gaunt & tragic figures in your path. If you do not, I suggest that you go out of your way to encounter them, as they are so somber & yet so moving in how they capture the hardships of those that suffered through the blight & resultant famine, that it’s impossible not to be touched by it.
The detail in the work of the artists’ as they captured their faces, the anguish felt in the near lifeless expressions is astonishing. In the wake of the people marching is a small dog, it too suffering the impacts of this terrible period in Ireland’s history.

Die Famine Sculpture, steht am Ufer der Liffey,
direkt gegenüber dem International Financial Services Center.
Zynisch betrachtet: was für eine Ironie. Ein Mahnmal gegen
die Hungersnot, direkt gegenüber einem großen Zentrum der
Finanzindustrie.
Die Famine Sculpture besteht aus aus einer
Personengruppe. Vier Menschen, paarweise hintereinander
angeordnet, zum Skelett abgemagert. Auf knochigen
Armen tragen sie ihre restlichen, zu einem Bündel
geschnürten Habseligkeiten. Ihre Gesichter scheinen in
Agonie erstarrt. Nicht der geringste Hoffnungsschimmer
ist in den von Auszehrung gekennzeichneten Gesichtern
zu erkennen. Dahinter, leicht seitlich versetzt, eine weitere
Gestalt, diesmal ohne Bündel, aber mit einem halbwüchsigen
Kind, das offensichtlich nicht mehr die Kraft hat, alleine
weiterzugehen und darum quer über die Schulter getragen
wird. Seitwärts daneben ein bis auf die Knochen abgemagerter
Hund, der sich nur mühsam weiter vorwärts bewegt.
Ein herzergreifender Anblick, der dem sensibleren Betrachter
die Kehle zuschnürt. Verstärkt wird dieser Eindruck noch, weil
die Skulpturen nicht auf einem Sockel oder Podest stehen,
sondern auf dem Bürgersteig, als wären sie normale Passanten.
Diese Skulpturen sollen an die Great Famine, die große
Hungersnot erinnern, die Irland in den Jahren zwischen 1845
und 1849 heimsuchte, und in deren Gefolge mehr als eine
Millionen Iren verhungerten, mehr als zwei Millionen
wanderten aus.
The Great Famine, die große Hungersnot, war DIE Katastrophe
in der irischen Geschichte und hat sich als Trauma in das
Gedächtnis der Iren eingebrannt.
Ausgelöst wurde die Hungersnot durch die Kartoffelfäule, die
die Kartoffelernten in diesem Jahren fast komplett vernichteten.
Und die Kartoffel war eben das Hauptnahrungsmittel der Iren in
dieser Zeit. Mit den anderen landwirtschaftlichen
Produkten wurden die Pachtzinsen an die angloirischen
Großgrundbesitzer bezahlt. Selbst in den Jahren der Hungersnot
war Irland ein Nettoexporteur von Nahrungsmitteln, von Getreide
und Vieh. Unterstützung seitens der englischen Regierung gab es
kaum. Die liberalen englischen Premierminister Gladstone und
Russell beriefen sich auf das Prinzip des Laisser Faire, nach
dem jeder staatliche Eingriff in den Handel und die
Nahrungsmittelverteilung eine Sünde war.
Eingeweiht wurde das Denkmal von der irischen Staatspräsidentin
Mary Robinson. Das ist auf einer Bronzetafel vermerkt. Gewidmet
ist es nicht nur Irland. Die Tafel weist ausdrücklich darauf hin, daß
es der irischen Nation gewidmet ist, also auch jenen Iren, die nicht,
oder nicht mehr in Irland leben.
Dieses Denkmal läßt einmal mehr erkennen, wie eng die meisten
Iren mit ihrer Tradition und Geschichte verbunden sind. Am dem
Tage, an dem wir das Denkmal aufsuchten, lagen frische weiße
Rosen vor den Skulpturen. Eine lag auch vor der des Hundes.
Als Freund Irlands, als Kenner der irischen Geschichte, hat mich
dieses Denkmal sehr fasziniert, weckte Emotionen in mir und
berührte mein Gemüt. Und ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn es
beim Leser auch nur nur ansatzweise dasselbe bewirkt.
Wer sich auch nur ein wenig für Irland und für seine Menschen
interessiert und auch nur ein kleines Faible für irische Geschichte hat,
für den ist bei einem Aufenthalt in Dublin der Besuch dieses
Denkmales ein absolutes Muss.

Beeindruckt durch seine düstere, zombie-​ähnliche Darstellung, die dem Betrachter ein wenig eine Vorstellung gibt, was damals in Ireland los war. Ist nebenbei ein sehr schöner Walk dahin am Fluss entlang. Ein absolutes muss, nicht nur weil Teile des Films PS. ich liebe dich hier gedreht wurden.

El autor dijo en su día que esta escultura nunca se acabaría, pues el objetivo de la misma es honrar a todos aquellos irlandeses que tuvieron que emigrar de la isla a causa de la hambruna y la pobreza, siendo posible llamar y poner una placa con aquellos nombres de aquella familia o personas que conozcas que murieron o emigraron por ello y, como no será posible conocer al 100%, de ahí que no se acabará la obra.
La escultura en sí es bastante impactante, con unos gestos, signos y detalles muy logrados, y un auténtico acierto ubicarla en la nueva zona de Dublín de docklands, donde se consigue que no se olvide la historia del país y sus gentes aún a pesar de la modernidad y crecimiento.

The detail in the face of each sculpture is truly magnificent. And I love the fact they included the dog, though heartbreaking it really reminds you that everything and everyone was devastated by this famine. Without speaking they say a thousand words and more about what it was like in the hardest of times. Totally worth a visit; these characters will haunt you and give insight to the harder times in Irish history. As I was staring deep into the hollow eyes of the sculptures, which look so life-​like though weak and lifeless, I was also shocked to see that a previous prime minister of Canada had left an inscription beside the statues which reads: In memory of the victims of the Great Famine, and for their desecendents who have done so much to build Canada. A stunning reminder of how the repression of an imperialist nation can result in the near destruction of an entire people and culture. I doubt anyone can walk among these figures after studying the history of Ireland without a tear in their eye.

Placed along the quays outside Dublin’s financial district, this group of sculptures is a stark reminder of Ireland’s less prosperous past. The effect is chilling: the sculptures’ materials have been manipulated to produce a rough finish, giving the impression the figures are eroding away whilst distraught expressions cry for help…
Anyone who’s fretting about the recession should come and see this — puts things into perspective a little!

A fitting tribute to those who died in the Irish Famine, the darkest chapter in Irish history. The way it is laid out allows for a rare insight into the suffering endured by the one million people who died as a result of the potato blight. A must see for tourists and Dubliners alike.

the first time i seen these i got a fright, they are so scarey looking at night!
but having seen them by light of day and imagining what it must have been like for these people who left out coountry in search of a better life… makes you kinda sad, they just look so desprate!
