DIT Aungier Street

There are many reasons I love DIT, to me it was the college for me with smaller numbers in classrooms and you get more a interaction with your lectures, compared to be sitting in a huge lecture room and getting lost! They truly do invest in their students and help you to achieve your highest marks possible for your degree, the college it self is so diverse and would be very well know for all its societies, especially for their LGBT society, which is great! Truly enjoying my time in DIT and it’s a college for everyone

Some of you reading this may not like my review and may dismiss me as a bitter, miserable sod, which you have the right to do. However, I feel what I have to write is important as I’ve bottled up my feelings for years about this.
I graduated from the Journalism with a language course and as you can guess from the one star rating, I did not have a good experience there and was left feeling bitter and disappointed as a result.
When I was attending secondary school, the teachers wanted their students to do well. They were very helpful, approachable and supportive if we were having any difficulties and I am grateful for that. I expected lecturers to be the same as universities are being paid thousands every year. I thought by paying fees, I was going to be educated in return. Shockingly, this was not the case and in retrospect, I don’t feel I got value for money. The quality of teaching in most of the lectures is appalling. To be brutally honest, I found most of the lectures tedious. Most of them involved the lecturers talking for hours and the students taking notes. One lecturer had power point slides, but he would leave gaps in his sentences. I remember we had a subject and the students were divided into groups. Each group had to read about a topic and we would have to make a presentation about it each week when it was our turn, the lecturer would just sit there and monitor. There was very little to no input from him throughout the entire semester in that subject. My point is reading a book is something we could all do at home, so attending his lectures seemed pointless. I was also shocked to learn in my first year that these lecturers aren’t trained to teach which I personally believe has to change as this is not what I or other students paid for.
I also got the impression that most of the lecturers there didn’t give a toss about their students. Lecturing was something they had to do and that was it. The lecturers seem to be passionate about their subjects but they don’t instill that into students. They didn’t go out of their way to help or support students, except for the woman who taught shorthand. She was one of the rare ones who genuinely cared about the progress of her students (probably because there was a high failure rate in shorthand). Sometimes, when I received a bad result on an essay, the lecturer would look down on me. I felt there could have been more individual meetings between lecturers and students to discuss their progress and the students could thus give feedback to lecturers. Handing out feedback forms to students at the end is just not good enough. In fairness though and on the other hand, the practical elements of the course are good preparation for students who want to work in a newsroom or radio in the future, so it does equip them with experience they can put on their CV when applying for jobs, but again, I felt the lecturers could have done more than just monitor.
The language classes were no different. I did French, so I can’t discuss how the other languages were taught. What I noticed with Irish is that the students communicated with their lecturer entirely through Irish, so I think they flourished more than us. The French language classes could have been more interactive. There was no emphasis on speaking the language or communicating entirely through French. There was more emphasis on learning about French media. This was a shame as when I began my Erasmus, I didn’t understand anyone who was speaking French to me (as the accent was so different) let alone how to ask for things in shops. This was something I picked up while I was in the country. The lecturers would talk about how students improved a lot from their Erasmus experiences and I think the reason that is because they have a need to use the language as they’re in a foreign country whereas when they’re in a classroom, they don’t have that need and I think that’s something that the lecturers need to address.

There are two reasons why this is the best college in Dublin.
Firstly, Marketing courses attract the most bestest looking women and Interior Design courses lure in the remaining few.
Secondly, Media Arts is where you’ll find all the coolest peeps, and is what basically all the cool people in Dublin studied at some stage.
The college has a great, busy atmosphere and, even though at first impression looking a little like an insurance companies headquarters, is surprisingly comfortable place to hang out.
The best thing about the DIT is that it doesn’t permanently make people unbearable the way Trinity and UCD manage to. I have some friends that I’m literally afraid of talking to post-​Trinity/​UCD for fear that they’ll be so smug and annoying that they’ll trigger some sort of murderous frenzy. The DIT, on the other hand, goes about educating people in a haphazard and inoffensive way, everyone has a good time and no one is psychologically scarred damaged.
My biggest problem with the DIT Aungier St. is that they built it backwards. The giant courtyard that everyone should be hanging out in smoking marijuana and skate boarding on is at the back of the building, meaning that it’s an uninhabitable, north facing, wind trap of doom.
This is a trivial matter though and the DIT Aungier St garners a comfortable five stars.
Media Arts class of ’09 foreva!

I love DIT Aungier street. Everything from the Fourth Floor school of media down to the Students Union in the basement has a great community atmosphere to it. I can’t imagine attending any other college to be honest.
Aungier street is big enough to be a college full of people that you don’t know but still small enough not to be impersonal. Plus it’s full of surprises. There was a mechanical bull in there the other day! Plus, I found a packet of crisps on one of the Student’s Union couches. WHAT A DAY!!!

Oh, my alma mater. I miss you School of Media.
If you’re middle class and incapable of getting into Arts in UCD, but the shame of DBS is just too much for you, chances are that you’ll end up doing marketing or retail management or some such at Aungier St.
DIT Aungier St is full of girls who wear lots of make up and have intimidatingly large hair, and boys who wear Abercrombie t-​shirts and tracksuit bottoms. Aungier St is the DIT for beautiful people, and is not to be confused with the hairy men fests that constitute most of the other DITs.
Due to the head of DIT’s personal predilections, Aungier St (nor any of the other DITs) has a pub, which means that the students are forced to spend the money that they’ve scrounged from their parents in other licenced premises, thereby denying the powers that be of a sizeable revenue stream. Good thinking, board of directors!

I couldn’t agree more with Rónán’s review… the media school saves DIT. Kidding!
I spent four years of my academic life SLAVING away here… yeah righ, it was easy peasy! I loved my time in DIT. The college itself is new and modern and the facilities are pretty up to date. The classes tend to be smaller than in a University, so there aren’t’ a huge amount of big lecture halls — it’s mostly small classrooms.
I, being a journalism student, spent most of my time in our newsroom, a facility just for us journos. Oh how we loved it!
Again, Rónán is bang on the money when he says the food is not cheap in here — the canteen is a complete rip off. Compared to the likes of Trinity and UCD, DIT students pay way more for lunch/​dinner.

Built on the grounds of the old Jacobs biscuit factory, Aungier street now functions as one of DIT’s largest southside campuses.
What to expect; lots of fake tan and rugby jerseys, this is business and marketing territory.
What not to expect; quality food at cheap student friendly prices. The cafeteria is passable but java city is very expensive for what it is. Realistically, they simply can’t compete with Camden street.
Of course, it gets five stars anyway because the shear untamed awesomeness of the School of Media completely redresses the balance. Obviously.
