Army Bargains

Does exactly what it says on the tin «Army Bargains» longest established army store and it shows. I’ve been going there for years. The owner is hands on and a colourful character and very helpful with advice and information. Always knocks a few quid off the tag price.

Staff there are helpful… So helpful they follow you around the shop like a shadow! The owner is a cantankerous rude old troll that would sooner insult you than help you. Honestly fuck everything about this place, buy your army kit online!

As a customer, I have never ever experienced a more uncharitable, grumpy and impatient man as the owner of this shop. I went to this shop to looking for a good quality reasonably priced bag. Like all the other outdoor shops I had visited, I took my time and asked about quality and price. As a student, most of his bags were way over my budget. When he showed me a cheap quality bag I shook my head. He then turned to me and said «Look I prefer if you go somewhere else and buy a bag and don’t waste my time.» I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I have never know a shop assistant to be so rude to a customer. When I went around the corner to Caple Camping and Clothing, the shop assistant there couldn’t have been more helpful and knowledgeable. He couldn’t do enough for me. When I told him of my experience in the Army Bargains, he said he wasn’t surprised. «People come to him all the time and tell him of the rudeness of the owner of Army Bargains. He’s made his money and he can afford to be rude to people. He doesn’t care about people». Needless to say, I’m really happy with my new back carrier from Caple Camping and clothing for € 40.

Setting out on a camping adventure, but don’t have any of the gear? Or for that matter much money to buy the gear?
Army Bargains is your one stop shop. They’ve got every kind of camping gear imagineable and other more military type material. The staff is really friendly and helpful, but the biggest draw for me is that everything is literally a bargain! It really makes you wonder how they’re prices are so much cheaper than a lot of other shops in town!

When we were teenagers, this was the place to go to get army boots, which at the time were key footwear for girls rocking the grunge look. It is far from five-​inch spike heels we were raised, and this is probably why today we have «taxi shoes» — shoes that will get you from the taxi to the venue, but that is basically it. Today, Army Bargains still does the boots — although it can be hard to find soldiers with size four feet — but also a range of outdoor equipment, including tents, lamps and everything for you need for a Bear Grylls type lifestyle.

As a student of the media it wasn’t infrequent, unreasonable or even questionable to be asked to get three balaclavas (one green, two black), a set of Smith and Wesson revolvers and as many kerosene storm lamps as you can carry.
And at times like this the only place worth knowing is Army Bargains. They’ll hook you up with the lamps and balaclavas, though you’ll have to dredge a bit deeper for revolvers. In fact, let alone the heavy artillery, they’ll set you up with all the army surplus you’ll ever want or need, as well as most of the camping equipment you’d need this side of base camp one.
Hidden down a lane way off Capel Street it can be easy to overlook but shouldn’t be as it’s likely you’ll find a good old fashioned bargain here.
