Although there were a couple of mixed reviews, my experience at Fat Ramen was great. I had the duck ramen and while the seating is limited and it did take longer than I expected, the product served made the wait seem insignificant. As for my ramen, the duck was cooked well and the noodles were super tasty. The other veggies and the broth worked great together and I had no problem finishing the whole thing. Like most other spots in Helsinki, there is wi-fi while you wait.

Absolutely delicious Japanese noodles with a Nordic touch, we had the four course menu and the food was to die for. The restaurant is more like a ‘market’ style where you order at the counter and then look for a place to seat. It can be packed on the weekend so do book ahead if you want to guarantee seating. It’s on the Hietalahden Tori where there are plenty of stands to order food with music and a nice crowd, but don’t worry they have nice table settings on the second floor so that you can enjoy your meal with nice company. The staff is very nice, they will make sure to ask about allergies beforehand but service can be slow when it’s super busy which is expected. The food is much cheaper than many similar restaurants with the same or better quality.

Probably should have known better, but what can I say, Ramen, when on point, is one of the best things out there. I have found that good ramen is unfortunately hard to find though and I’m not sure why I got my hopes up at a market in Finland. Maybe it was the word fat in the name which I have found is the key to a good Tonkotsu. Unfortunately there wasn’t much fat in the broth and it was actually the worst broth I’ve ever had. Just way too watery and flavorless. No hint of salt or fat. And unfortunately for this place, the broth is what separates the good ramen from the bad. On the good side, the pork belly was pretty fantastic so that helped out a little bit. But that broth. Ugh. Seems like the people working there werw trying their best, and hopefully they figure it out, but until then, don’t get your hopes up like I did.
