Last fall we were planning a major remodel and wanted to start with the driveway. I asked friends and neighbors for referrals. The driveway was original to the home; 65 year old, layers of blacktop and concrete and a mess. I’d gotten prices to dig out the old one and replace it with blacktop but we had decided that we wanted to do it once and do it right and consider concrete. After talking to a concrete contractor that seemed more interested in «what method of payment will you be using» and«will you be hanging around when we do the work?» I was at a standstill. Finally a neighbor said check out Dave Webb Concrete in Youngstown so I figured I’d start there. First off he has a website with pictures of his work! I was amazed how many contractors are behind the curve and don’t even have a website. Next I checked the Better Business Bureau. He was BBB rating of A+ and ‘Accredited’, with 0 complaints! OK, I’ll give this outfit a shot. The owner, Dave Webb, showed up. He listened, took measurements, answered my questions, explained the procedure from beginning to end; digging out the existing driveway and walks, hauling everything away, hauling in and leveling the base and then the concrete pour and finish work AND he said he would be in and out in 3DAYS! Then it got interesting. I asked Dave about ‘fancy’ finishes I had seen on other driveways. Here’s where Dave Webb proved he knew what he was doing; he asked me «Is your wife home? «I replied she was, but why did he want to know. He told me he had done this work long enough to know that when you delve into stamping, inserts, designs, colors and custom finishes, that it was best that BOTH parties were on board. Dave proved to be a very wise man. My wife came out and I explained my ‘vision’ to her and Dave; beige colored concrete, cobblestone stamping with a red bricked edge and a gloss finish. My wife’s response was«The house is a white Cape Cod with black trim, that driveway would look GOOFY!» OK, bonus points for Dave Webb. At this point I stepped back and let the ‘boss’ discuss finishes with Dave. They decided on natural concrete, with an 8 inch edging and a brush finish. Now that we knew what ‘we’ wanted; Dave gave us a price, the date he could start, and addresses of 3 driveways he had done that were similar to what we wanted. We viewed the 3 driveways he gave us, in fact as we were looking at the third one the homeowner pulled in and we had a nice chat about Dave Webb, and decided then and there to have him do the work. Final result: 3 days in and out. A crew that was hardworking, courteous and conscientious of our property, the neighbors and us. Even the concrete truck drivers from American Concrete in Lockport swept and hosed down the street after they delivered their loads of concrete. The final result is a beautiful driveway that I must admit, matches the home perfectly AND was way less expensive than we expected. Moral of the story; Check previous work done AND have ALLPARTIES present when you discuss design, stamping, inserts, colors or finishes.
