Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant

Best lunch buffet in Yorkville. Mexican food only. Value and selection are great, even the chicken wings are great. For $ 6.99 it is a very good lunch place.

This review would be much higher if it weren’t for the service. The man that «greeted» us (that’s a stretch) acted as if us coming in for dinner at 6 PM was an inconvenience.
The lack of conversations and prompts was unbearable. And I felt like the wait for our food was longer than usual due to a bunch of people coming for carry out. Maybe so they don’t have to interact with unfriendly staff?
The food was great. I ordered the burrito frito– enough for leftovers for sure. The rice is great! My husband got his usual carne asade and said it was solid.
You know it’s bad when you spend part of date night Unilocaling other Mexican restaurants you could’ve gone to…

Great food, great service, great people. .we look forward to eating there every Friday night… so happy the new owners bought pepe and turned it around. .food and service has improved 110 percent

Under new management great food great owner very accommodating. They are putting in an outdoor eating area come spring don’t pass this up!

Website and door read open until 10:00 PM. Walked in at 8:40 and was told they were closing and were only accepting carry-​out orders.

Under new management now. You get a big bowl of salsa. Food is Soooooo much better. Service is better. We are back to coming here at least once per week. The place is packed too!

Not sure what’s going on at this location. We always get the same thing, steak fajitas for two. You usually get an abundance of veggies and steak, two platters of «sides» (one for each person), and two separate dishes of tortillas. NOT the case, only one of each and barely enough steak for one person. We asked for «easy» on the green peppers and additional onions. There were NO peppers at all. The owner was the only one working besides whom ever was cooking. I asked the owner if this was a single order or truly «for two?» I told him that we usually get two plates of everything and questioned the portions. He was willing to bring another plate of «sides» and additional steak. We refused because we felt like he should have gotten it right the first time! We won’t be back. The diet RC was also flat, and the chips were not served «warm» like they usually are. There are so many other fantastic places in Yorkville for Mexican! Try Salsa Verde or Casa Santiago :)

I’ve been to Pepe’s twice now. The first time was on Cinco De Mayo. This place did a wonderful job with the overabundance of business for the holiday, and they honored my coupon even though they did not have to! The second time we went there were only a few other people there. The service was fast and the food was just as delicious as the first time.

Terrible. Granted, I went in at 3:30 or so and the place was empty. But no matter what time you go into a restaurant, the food should be fresh. I ordered a chicken taco salad. Terrible. The chicken was luke warm and in perfect canned sized chunks. There was one person working in the entire place (unless the flies were part of the payroll) yet our food was ready in 5 minutes. Asked for cheese dip and of course, didn’t have any. Explanation you ask? «Too hard to make». Save your money. This place is awful. And I don’t want to imagine what condition the food was in while being prepped.

My sister and I were there last Saturday. FIRST OF ALL THE TORTILLA CHIPS WERE STALE!
A young White guy waited took our take out order. There was a Latina woman that came to the counter, I suppose to help him. She was so rude in her behavior that I wanted to just leave. She even turned to the guy and made some sort of secretive gesture to him, as we were ordering. WTH?! My sister suggested we just grab our food and go since it was raining hard and our camper vents were still open. As we left my sister had gotten the same negative vibe from the woman. I am just not comfortable eating any food that comes from someone like that. If that is what she does in our face, I wonder what goes on in the kitchen. I’d been there before, maybe a year ago and there was a latino man who took my order. When I asked that there be cilantro and I to be sure there was lime on the side, he accommodated me. For the most part I don’t like Mexican chain restaurants because they are too watered down. I went back to this one because the gentleman that waited on me the year before did the best he could to make the experience authentic. I would NEVER go to that Pepe’s again. That woman’s attitude and secret gestures was probably to say…“give them the leftovers starting with the stale tortilla chips.” JUST AWEFUL!

The lunch buffet is the best deal during the week. I was not disappointed. Everything was fresh. Will visit again.

The food is delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive. The only thing that needs improving is the atmosphere. It is not very intimate but rather open. They need to turn music on, the TVs off & the lights down, especially during the dinner hours.

Awful frozen then microwaved Mexican like food. Just keep looking– DO NOT stop here. Very disappointed.
Hadn’t been to a Pepe’s in over 10 years, now I remember why.
Good, friendly and courteous staff.
But food is just awful.

Words? Who needs words. Just eat there. Is rather eat at Taco Bell. Save money and avoid stomach issues.

We had quesadillas this evening. They must’ve updated their recipes. The guacamole was chunky and fresh tasting. The meat didn’t seem over cooked and was tasty. Their chips and salsa are still very good. Just one waitress tonight and she handled the restaurant efficiently.

Service was great. Wait staff was on the ball. Complimentary chips and salsa was delish.

Good margaritas, but ZERO service. No one checked on us AT ALL; we had to flag down a waiter to order! No one even removed our menus.

I would rate them a zero, if I could. One thing I hate is if a business has unethical practices. We had a coupon that arrived in the mail from Pepe’s. It offered a free entrée with the purchase of another entrée and 2 drinks. When we ordered our drinks (hot chocolate and iced tea), the server told us that the relevant machines were broken. We said that it was fine, please bring us water. We then ordered two entrees, and since it was during the ‘Cinco de Mayo’ period, we also ordered a ‘fried icecream’ that a flyer in the restaurant said was 0.99c.
When the bill arrived, imagine our shock when he said that since we hadn’t ordered drinks (even though bottled water was in the drinks section), the second entrée was not free unless we paid for ‘other’ drinks, that we didn’t even have. On top of that, he charged $ 5 for the icecream (that should have been 0.99c). Finally, we managed to get the second entrée for free by paying for drinks that we didn’t order and pointed out that the icecream’s price on the bill was wrong.
I wonder how many people they have cheated this way. The food was average, at best. We will never, ever go here again.

This place is hit or miss
Today was a big miss we ordered steak nachos and they put green peppers on them which they never had done before called to complain an the person who I talked just made all kinds of excuses and would not refund me for the orderer
Will not be going here ever again

Pepe’s is typical Americanized Mexican food. Yes they have fajitas. Which I refuse to order or even try. The food is pretty good. The servers are friendly, although service can be slow at times. I really like the steak tacos and long island ice tea. For a small town, it works.
