Let me start by saying this was my first time here, so I have no idea if this is the norm or if they were having an off day. We arrived on a Tuesday around 6pm, and we’re immediately seated in the back room. The hostess said someone would be with us shortly and went on her way. I am not exaggerating when I say we sat there over ten minutes before the waitress came over to us. She passed us several times, but never stopped. We ordered our drinks and when she came back ordered the super nacho as an appetizer. We asked for no tomato or avocado. We perused the menu, and realized it was very limited. We didn’t see her again until about 25 minutes later she told us our appetizer would be out soon. She then asked if we would like to order now. Yes, we sat the for almost a half hour before even getting to put our order in. My boyfriend ordered a sandwich of some sort with a side of rice pilaf and French fries. I ordered the club sandwich with a bowl of French onion soup. We had needed more drinks for a while now, so she grabbed our glasses to fill them as well. Shortly after that, she brought our nachos. They had both avocado, and tomato. We didn’t mention anything to the waitress, and picked it off. About forty minutes later we received our food. She brought it all out in about a give minute period, we didn’t recieve it all together. She never brought the rice pilaf. I do have to say this would have gotten a four if based on food alone, because it was fairly good. We were at the restaurant for over two hours though, for nachos and cold cut sandwiches. I was a server for almost ten years, so I know sometimes things get tough, but this was just unnecessary. If we want to spend hours at a restaurant, it wouldn’t be here.

We’ve been coming here on and off for years and on this visit we noticed there have been some changes. First, they took the whitefish off the menu, that was truly disappointing. Second, the chefs were spooky and unsanitary looking. Our waitress was kind and helpful but forgot a few things like bread and our appetizer. Lastly, the perch had NO flavor! This restaurant has been a mainstay for so long I hope we were there on an off night.

My wife and I have been talking about going back to R.P. McMurphy’s for some time because it’s been almost 20 years since we were there last. So, for our weekly date night, we stopped in last night, which was a Friday, around 5:15 and was told that all the tables were reserved. It was Third Friday in the ‘Dotte and we knew most places would be packed and we were hungry so we decided to sit at the bar and eat. That ended up being a great idea! We are so glad we decided to stay and eat at the bar. Our server Bobbie was very polite and attentive to our every need even though she was also working the bar. My wife had the Holiday Pork Chop and I had the Steak Debra. Both meals came with our choice of salad or soup. My wife chose the French onion soup, which can be a crapshoot as far as saltiness goes. However, the soup was very tasty and was not too salty. In addition, they served a basket of warm bread that included one pretzel roll. Jackpot! We love pretzel rolls! Bobbie was consistently checking on us, clearing dishes and making sure our drinks were full. When our entrees arrived my wife and I both remarked that the portion sizes were very generous. My steak was cooked just as requested, which was medium, and was so tender it almost made the knife irrelevant. The steak had a nice sauce that complemented the steak rather than overpowering it. My sides were mashed potatoes that had the right consistency and some very fresh green beans. My wife’s pork chops had some tasty spiced apples on top that added to the flavor experience. The stuffing that accompanied the chops had the right amount of sage. Honestly, too much sage destroys stuffing. At the end, Bobbie suggested some very delicious desserts but we were so full from the generous portions that we had to pass on the desserts. The owner had been making his way around the restaurant meeting the guests and took the time to thank us for coming in. That was a nice touch! Overall, we had a great experience and would highly recommend R.P. McMurphy’s!

Firstly, the back room had an old, rustic décor but of the 10 booths and 2 tables back there, 6 of them had very young, loud kids. No big deal, whatever, it’s a bar/restaurant, I get it. But it was very loud, I was able to fart out loud without anyone noticing until the smell took over. Anyhow… We had their cajun shrimp and appetizer of the day which was just a small disc of brie cheese not warmed nearly enough with 5 burnt pieces of small toast. Shrimp was OK. Our soups were OK, she had the shrimp and asparagus bisque and I had the french onion. Hers was OK and the french onion had a good taste but the bread/croûton tasted stale which overpowered the taste, the swiss cheese was cooked nicely but there was way too much, had to dig through mounds of cheese to get to the broth. She had the perch which was just OK, the pasta was bland and the veg of the day, green beans were ice cold. I had the steak debra which was two very small discs of tenderloin with an overpowering garlic version of zip sauce not very good. For $ 22 it was a complete ripoff. The two rolls with butter were hard as a rock. On a side note, the most syrupy tasting pepsi I have ever had, which I really enjoyed. The most fun was watching a middle aged couple with a small child no more than 3 years old in the booth across from us put down a 2 bottles of red wine then drive home. Great parenting. Poor kid. In summation, too loud, too many kids, wait time for courses was very slow, food was just OK, she got the sh! ts pretty bad two hours after we got home, probably the perch…, nice older waitress. Booths all had torn red faux leather on the backing and seats, and the ceiling in the back room had a 4 to 5 foot repair patch that clearly no one bothered to paint over. Just raw/rough spackling. The place seemed aptly named, you would need to have a frontal lobotomy like RP McMurphy to go back. 2 stars.

It doesn’t get much better than this in lovely Wyandotte(rather than«Downriver», this gem of an area needs to rebrand itself«Top of the Lake»… But that’s a different blog). This place has been here in its current form since 1979(the owners named it after Jack Nicholson’s character in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest), but has actually been a tavern since the 1800s– with the same authentic décor. It is so cool and really a great atmosphere. You feel as though you’re tucked away in some New England tavern here. Onto the food– it is simple fare but fresh and delicious. Prepared with care, the dishes are always amazing. I’ve been staying in the area for the last 2 weeks and have dined here quite a bit so I know the menu pretty well. Try the Steak Diane– their«zip» sauce with it is tangy and savory. With house made mashed potatoes, you can’t go wrong. Tonight, though, I’m having their fresh lake perch, lightly sautéed. I started with a glass of Malbec(Argentina and Sonoma would be happy to see their wines represented here). Holly, my server tonight, is lovely and completely on point. Every server I’ve encountered has been awesome. If you’re in the Detroit area, this place(and the little hamlet of Wyandotte) is a do not miss!

Food was great. I ordered the California grilled cheese and a side of Cajun fries. Both were delicious. The bacon on my sandwich was crispy and the bread was toasted perfectly. My waitress was very pleasant and the overall experience was really good. I however am unable to give this restaurant a perfect score because of two minor issues. 1. The tables were too high. Usually restaurant tables hit right beneath my breasts. These tables were about two inches higher. It made it uncomfortable to eat my sandwich, I kept having to readjust my elbows. It was kinda weird… 2. My meal was supposed to come with a cup of soup. However, the waitress informed me that the only two kinds of soup were clam chowder & a shrimp bisque. I asked her if they had a soup that didn’t have shellfish. She said yes they have French onion, however it would be a $ 2 up charge. I was very disappointed that they provided little options for people who either can’t or don’t eat shellfish. Other than that, I will definitely go back.

Cool building, good atmosphere, just a tad but just barely over rated… but it is a good place to check out!

Went to dinner after the Wyandotte Street Fair with friends. We lucked out and got seated quickly. I ordered the Chef Elusion sandwich which was corned beef piled high with melted Swiss cheese, coleslaw, Russian dressing on grilled rye bread. The sandwich came with a pickle spear. We split a order of fries. 3 people ate of the fries. The fries were tasty thin fries. Service was excellent and food was delicious. As busy as it was in the restaurant our food came out fast. Will be going back again.

We stopped here for lunch. Since this was my first time in Michigan in a while, I thought I’d have the fried perch sandwich. I normally avoid fried fish, but I have to say this was the best I’ve ever had. My companion said her sandwich was very good also. Although the restaurant was packed, the waitress was calm and polite, food came promptly.

We stopped in to RP McMurphy’s for some lunch. We have been here a few times before and have always had a positive experience. The prices are not exactly cheap, so we don’t visit frequently, maybe once or twice every three months. Our lunch this time around was great also. Since it was lunch time we were seated at a table in the bar area. The place was fairly quiet, at first. There was someone sitting at the bar who gradually became louder and louder. He was obviously pretty drunk and was using some profanity. He seemed to be a regular, so nobody really asked him to refrain himself. We found it a bit humorous, but it may have been an issue if small children were around. Both my fiancée and myself agree the décor in this place is very cool. You get a kind of classy old school vibe from it without it seeming outdated. Each table has a small stained glass lamp at the end. The place kind of reminds me of the TV show Cheers. The table had plenty of room, that could easily mange to seat four people comfortably. The only thing I didn’t like was the floor. It was slippery. I had sneakers on and I felt like the floor was greasy. It looked clean so I’m not sure if it was from grease or maybe just some soap residue from cleaning. The food is quite good. It is not typical bar food. You can get a burger or sandwich, but you can also find things such as Ahi Tuna, Calamari, Escargot and Filet Mignon. They also have a daily special menu. I ordered the Reuben with an order of onion rings while my fiancée had an order of mussels with a side of vegetables. The prices were a bit more than you would pay at a lot of places, but I think the portion size kind of made up for that. The rueben had plenty of corned beef which was served on big pieces of rye bread. The order of onion rings was large too. My fiancée was especially pleased with the size of her mussel platter. We both took food home. My sandwich was delicious. The onion rings however were not so good. They were beer battered, which was great. The problem was they were a very deep brown color and were saturated in oil. I know onion rings are fried, but these things were super greasy. I think the oil in the fryer probably needed to be changed. My fiancée loved her mussels and the vegetables she had looked very fresh. The service was pretty good too. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The only issue we had was when we left she boxed up our food for us and brought it over in a brown paper to go bag. When we went to leave I saw the bottom of the bag was completely wet and leaking. It was the mussels. She apologized and re-boxed it. Unfortunately she must not have wrapped it up properly again because once we got outside, same problem. Pros: –Classy looking place with a decent relaxed atmosphere –Wide range of food options –Fresh, delicious tasting food –Good portion sizes Cons: –Not cheap, can be a bit expensive, especially for a lunch. –Not really a family oriented place(drunk guy at the bar) –Some food can be hit or miss(onion rings from above)

I’ve been to RP McMurphy’s a few times and I have to say its a bit hit or miss. It is a staple in Wyandotte… it is a quant old-school bar with a more modern menu than you might expect and friendly service. Upon reading the menu, I was surprised that they had some creative menu choices that go beyond bar food. Some dishes just, somehow, miss the mark. They have great soup and lunch items but dinner usually misses the flavor you think you’re paying for.

We have been going to RP’s for years! Love the food and nice atmosphere. Deb is by far the best waitress we have had at any restaurant. My only suggestion would be to be a bit more generous with the wine portions. Love the pretzel rolls too! Always our first choice when we go out.

So loud and rude. the owner is a horrible people person… waited over 10 minutes at my table to even be noticed… he begged us to stay and said he would take care of everything so we decided to stay… the bill came… and everything we ordered was on it… he said he only agreed to buy us drinks… we disagreed and he threw a fit and said he never wanted to see us in his restaurant again… worst dining experience of my life… a joke

As a native of Wyandotte I should know this place but in all the years I lived in the city, I’ve never been here until this past weekend. As another reviewer stated, I too was a bit surprised by the hostess greeting us with«do you have a reservation?» Looking around at all the empty tables and booths, it really seemed like a stupid thing to ask. A little sticker shock from the wine menu. I’ve been to some very upscale places that weren’t as pricey. Service was prompt and courteous. The food was good but not what I would consider top notch especially for the price. Overall it was just not a memorable dining experience. Not bad, just not so great. I don’t think we will be returning anytime soon

This is starting to be the goto spot for taking visiting friends and family out in the area. The food is always consistent, the staff very friendly and inviting, and restaurant clean. They have a nice menu that is not over crowded and a good selection of craft beers. You get what you pay for here and I’ve always been satisfied with my meal and experiance.

I went here with two others on a Saturday, late afternoon. All we wanted was a late lunch/early dinner… Walking thru the door, we were immediately looked at, up and down by the hostess. She practically stopped us from stepping in another foot. With her nose in the air, she asked if we has reservations? My bf looked at me, I looked at him… we were perplexed. we thought we were at a bar in Wyandotte. We didn’t know we were at a high end, fancy shmancy restaurant. Sorry to intrude, RP… Let your empty tables remain empty, with ‘reservation’ signs on them… next time we want a beer and a sandwich, we’ll call weeks in advance!!! Or maybe we won’t…

I eat lunch here at least once a week. The waitress with the short blond hair is the BEST! She is so nice and prompt. I tend to stick to the lunch menu as the prices tend to be on the high side. Ambience is good. If you don’t get the short blond server then the service becomes«just ok».

Recently visited RP’s after 14 years since my last visit. Although many people have great things to say about it I was not overly impressed. The décor is fantastic, they could really work the place better if the service and food followed. Not that any part of the experience was terrible, it was just OK. When I think about a great place to go this would not be the place. Before leaving the restaurant I had to visit the little boys room. Well this is where the evening turned for the worse. The cleanliness(or lack there off) was not suitable for a prison. The smell within the restroom was awful, I do not enjoy the smell of raw sewage! Normally I can look past certain things, especially when visiting an old building. However, the restroom was to much to look past.

I like this place. Good ambiance. We decided to forego the table and sit at the bar for immediate food. It was good, but I think I would have a better experience should I return. We shared some fried pickles. Let me clarify — the pickles were spears, not chips. And though they make them in beer batter from the kitchen, I think I missed the cruddy ones from the bag. I had the special(which was a mediocre pot roast. Honestly people, if you are going to have it, you better bring it) and it was nothing special. The wife had a salmon that was so good, she decided not to share it with me, so there’s that. I also had a small French onion soup. It was decent, but there was a piece of bread that was hard as a rock. But we eat out so sparingly these days, I just spit it out and hid it behind the cup. The place is small, but I would come back for the customer service, alone. I’m a heavy(soda) drinker, and the service was great enough that I would assuredly return.
