I had the best cream filled doughnut here, that I’ve ever eaten! Not joking. Having eaten lunch at Luis Tacqueria, nearby, and thinking I’d left room for desert, I still could not eat my whole doughnut. It’s very rich, wonderful doughy texture, very fresh, more cream filling than you can believe fits in one doughnut. This is a very Hispanic, rural neighborhood and we stuck out a little, as the oddballs in this little, local market. This was not so much the case in Luis Tacqueria, nearby, which seemed more«discovered» by the outside world.

Apparently Woodburn is 40% Hispanic, and if you actually go through the town, you’ll actually realize this since it’s full of taquerias. My cuz read about this place somewhere and we decided to check it out since they had a nice offal selection. It’s basically a bakery connected to a taqueria stand connected to a veg and meat shop where the seating for the taqueria is connected to a meager latin music section. In either case, I had the torta cubano $ 7 and a plate of carnitas $ 6. I wouldn’t recommend the torta cubano since it’s a little too much stuffing for the bread to hold it all and tends to get a bit too soggy to properly hold. The carnitas on the other hand was pretty good for $ 6 with a side of rice and beans. The taqueria stand sells pretty fresh pork rinds by the lb, as well as some of the other meats they have for their specials. It was a nice experience, service was pretty quick, tamales and burrito shells are made fresh which is nice, and the food was pretty good. The cubano torta has these little hot dog things in them which didn’t look that appetizing but they use a nice ham as well as what seemed like a breaded beef patty which reminded me of some stands back to home on the island which was nice. The butcher was everything I’d expect with a nice pig head sitting in the case with its eyeballs beckoning, «Come on Larry, you know you want to make some headcheese today, maybe some cheek salad.» Unfortunately, I was already making a leg of lamb or I would have definitely taken it. It’s nice to be able to just go into a shop and get a pig head. It’d definitely be nicer to come here fluent in spanish though, since I would have been able to try the tripe stew or whatever else they had to offer, which is quite a bit. I wonder though, where do the locals go? 3 stars, probably more if I spoke the language and actually knew more about hispanic desserts.
