Had a great time here with my 4 and 5 year old boys. Neither are specifically«into» trains but spent well over an hour exploring the trains and accompanying scenes. Gave it 4 stars bc the man in the front was not very friendly. I asked a few questions but received short answers. From there, we explored on our own. And they do not have a bathroom. So we had to leave and come back midway through the visit

Based on the Unilocal reviews, we took the 1:45 hour trip to Wolfesboro to check out the plethora of trains. Previous comments about it being small were understated. The layout of N and HO guage trains, while detailed, spanned the area of an average family room. We were in and out in 20 minutes, and this was while pacing ourselves and taking lots of pictures. If you’re already in the area and are a model train enthusiast, definitely swing by, but don’t make a special hour+ trip to visit.

Based on the reviews I took my four years old grandson who is naturally into trains. It was a disappointment. The place, while at first glance have real appeal for this age group, like moving model trains, bells and whistles, all fun and exciting, it is also shabby(bordering on dirty), poorly maintained(a number of the switches are broken, lights burned out, etc) and most importantly poorly managed. An establishment catering to the pre-school crowd, it is at best curious not to have a restroom. When my grandson told me he needed to go to the bathroom, and a quick«look around» did not reveal one, I asked the manager, who gruffly said«We don’t have one. Go to Dunkin Donuts or one of the public restrooms in town» and went back to his private conversation with his body. For an out-of-town visitor neither of those options are obvious or easily reachable, and if you ever traveled with a four years old you know that the sentence«Grandma I need to make …» does not mean sometimes in the foreseeable future. We did make to Dunkin Donuts, but when I asked my grandson if we should go back, he thought about it for a moment and then said«I think not. The trains were fun, but the man was mean.»

A wonderful museum and shop that is truly a labor of love. It’s easy to miss from the road, but definitely worth a stop. The shop has so many interesting things to look at, from model trains to rockets and cars, old and new hobbyist paraphernalia, even antique train memorabilia. The selection is quite diverse and it’s worth a visit just to look around. I’ve never spoken to the owner, but I suspect if you get him talking, he’d be a wealth of information. If you’ve got little kids or are a train enthusiast, the museum is definitely the draw here. The majority of the building has been lovingly taken over by chugging choo choos and miniature villages, complete with interactive displays, sounds, smoke, and lighting effects. There is an entrance fee to visit the museum, which is bigger than it looks from the outside. The museum is open year-round; Thurs-Sun in the Summer, Thurs-Sat in the spring, and Fri-Sat in the off season.

My two little boys love model railroads and model trains. As a result, everyplace we go, we visit the model railroad museum if there’s one to be found. We’ve been to many, and this little place in Wolfeboro, NH, is a hidden gem and TOTALLY worth the price of admission. Please note that I hold back the 5-star ratings for only those places I’ve been to other businesses of the same type and can truly say THIS place is significantly above-average when compared to other similar places around the country. It may not be very big, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in a Where’s-Waldo type of fun. The scenery around the railroad tracks is incredibly detailed. There are lot of miniature scenes that will make you laugh. Plus, there are a lot of things hidden around the railroad that you are challenged to find — like the miniature Superman or the miniature Indiana Jones. Those sorts of things keep me occupied for quite a while. For my boys though, this railroad is better than most others we have visited because there is actually a lot of hands-on stuff for them to do here. There are buttons to push every few feet along the walkway that make something happen in the scenery — make a building light up, make smoke come out of a smoke stack, make a whistle blow, make a train run… At a lot of other model railroad places, the boys just have to stand and watch and there are lots of «please don’t lean on the glass» and«don’t touch» signs. This place actually offers the kids an outlet for their desire to touch things. We love this place and can’t wait to go back whenever we come to visit Lake Winnipesaukee.
