Went there for the first time a couple days ago, thanks in part to Unilocal reviews. They have amazing Hot dogs. Their sauerkraut is amazing, buns are buttery toasted and extremely delicious. There were several people working and all were very helpful and friendly. Can’t wait to try their BBQ!

Another old school hot dog place that’s really good! I heard about this place from people at my job, and I am glad I tried it! I get my hot dog all the way which is the only way to eat it! I have to have cheese on my hot dog, and they charge extra but it’s well worth it! They make their own chili which is delicious, and they have good service as well! The only thing I am not crazy about is that they don’t have fries, but potato chips in place of them. I am not too crazy about that, but I do like the fact that they have old school soda’s in their large cooler which is pretty cool. They also have snack cakes and candy bars for purchase too. This place is always packed which speaks volumes to their quality of service and the popularity around the triad! It’s no wonder why this place has been around for as long as it has!

I’ve been a customer of Pulliam’s for many years and I love both the BBQ and the hotdogs. The BBQ is unlike any I’ve had anywhere in the world. The meat is very minced and has an unusual flavor. Yesterday a friend had surgery and for the first time I got takeout in pints. Three people who had never had Pulliam’s BBQ sandwiches got to try it for the first time. Two loved the taste and one did not. The«slaw» used on the BBQ sandwiches is not traditional southern coleslaw. The slaw is actually a coarse chopped, homemade sauerkraut. If you like kraut, you will probably love the BBQ sandwich. The takeout was wonderful and enjoyed by all but one of my friends. As someone else said, Pulliam’s BBQ can be an acquired taste. But for me, it was love at first bite because I am a kraut lover.

Since 1910, they have been making some of the best hot dogs you’ll ever eat. When I was a small child in the late sixties and early 70s, the hot dogs only came two ways, with slaw and without. but later, they started making them with your choice of traditional NC fixin’s, like mustard, slaw, chili and onions. They are delightfully delicious grill toasted buns, and grilled, red, hot dogs! The BBQ is GREAT too!!! Old Time recipe, served on a bun with a wonderful fermented kraut/slaw. Don’t expect Lexington or Eastern NC style BBQ. It is Pulliams style, and it is oh so delicious! Great selection of soda pop and B&G Pies! Great old time NW Piedmont food experience!!! Friendly, smiling staff will help to make it even better.

on our way to jacksonville we drove through w-s and found this lovely little place for bbq. loved their bbq and the cheerwine was satisfying. there’s a picnic area of tree stumps to sit and relax and enjoy your sandwich. thanks for making a sensational sandwich. hope you will be around for many generations to come.

As my co-workers tell me this is a Winston-Salem institution and they make some tasty Carolina style hot dogs here. I got the 2 hot dog special with a can of Cheerwine and chips for a little over 6 bucks. Not bad. The hot dogs are good too coming from a Chicago boy who loves Chicago style dogs. They toast their buns for a nice crunchy texture and they have a unique neon red dog. The cole slaw is nice a creamy and the chili is good too. Not much seating including the stumps outside but this is a good small divey location that seems family run and just plain old good.

After reading a few years ago that this was voted as one of the best places to go get a hotdog in the country, I knew I had to make a special trip to see what it was all about. I first drove down with my mom a few years ago. The place itself doesn’t look like very much. No inside searing, old building, a get your own drink style of lift up cooler, but it works for the style of food that they serve. If it’s a nice day and you want to chill out, you can always catch a seat of the several stumps they have sitting outside. The hotdogs come wrapped in a paper napkin, so they are best eaten right there on the spot. I’m not sure how they fix them or what they are made of, but the dogs are unusually red. Very tasty though! The buns are toasted just right and it’s just as all around savory experience you won’t forget if you’re looking for a good dog.

I was introduced to Pulliam’s almost two years ago. It HAS to be the BEST hotdog I’ve ever eaten, hands down. The building doesn’t look like it would house such a wonderful treat, so don’t judge a book by its cover. You have to stand to eat your dog inside, but that just gives you an excuse to eat«just one more» since you cant feel your belt getting tighter. For me, chili makes a hotdog, and they’ve got some FINE chili. Oh, and the bun AND the hot dog are grilled! What an incredible experience!

I’ve been going to Pulliam’s since I was a little girl. I still think they have the best hotdogs! Ignore any negative reviews you may read. There isn’t a negative here unless you require a waiter, fork or spoon. If so, you shouldn’t be eating hotdogs. This is a family owned business, a great, friendly bunch of people.

Best Hot Dogs in town! Been to all the greats in town, but I keep going back to Pulliams for«two ATW no onions». I add a back and forth of Big Ed’s hot sauce and a little extra mustard! Love the toasted buns and a Cheerwine bottle to wash the deliciousness down!

Pulliam’s has been here for so long that I could tell you some stories that you just wouldnt believe. I will leave that for some other place and time. What I can tell you is that this is THE place to get a hot dog in Winston. Period. Its the best. The buns are toasted, and the dogs grilled on a flat top grill, with plenty of butter. The slaw is their own special recipe that they have been making for longer than I have been on this planet. They call it marinated slaw, and it has a taste and texture all of its own, and I am certain you will never find its equal. Well worth a note home to mom by itself. You can get drinks in glass bottles from a cooler just like you would have 40+ years ago. They only offer sides of chips. No fries etc. I usually skip the chips and just go for the dogs, and of course a Coke from the cooler. Their chili is very good, and when combined with the slaw, mustard, and onion on a dog is simply heaven on earth. You will not find a better southern hot dog than Pulliam’s. They are in a class by themselves. The BBQ on the other hand is simply no good. In fact it is the worst BBQ I have ever tried to eat. Its ground to a consistency with a texture much like dog food, and tastes about the same. I’m sorry to rain on your parade but this BBQ is some nasty stuff. Just stick with the hot dogs and you cant go wrong. The rest. parking is not very good, and it gets full quick. There is NO seating. Yep, you read that right. NO seating. You can sit on tree stumps on the side of the building, if there is one free, or eat in your car, or get it to go. The building sure dont look like much on the outside, or really inside either, its strictly business. This is a sandwich shop which has shaped the community, and lives of countless people. Its not gourmet food. And it is very old school. The service is always very fast and friendly. If I could give you 6 stars, I would do it. Best hot dogs anywhere.

This was the first BBQ I ever ate and was raised on it. We always referred to it as «John Pulliam’s bbq» not Pulliams’s. I realized later on that it is a unique bbq that you cannot find anywhere else. It is chopped very fine and has a load of chili powder in it, their own blend heavy with cumin. I still love it and would eat it everyday if I could. It is a shame though that they cannot get the square Dewey’s buns anymore that they would steam. Those really made it special. Btw, I have never eaten a hotdog there, my loss for I love hotdogs. For those who disparage John Pulliam’s bbq, go somewhere else. I love it just as it is and hope they never change the recipe to satisfy people who just don’t understand.

Finally after being in the city 26 years I stopped in for the infamous hot dog. Order the combo; 2 hot dogs chili, mustard, and onions with chips and a cheerwine. Well if it wasn’t for the chips and cheerwine my lunch would have been a bust. The bread was drenched in butter and toasted and rather soggy. The hot dog lacked flavor or maybe it was lost in the greasy bun. I am glad I finally tried it, but I won’t be back. The staff was nice and friendly, very helpful. The prices are great. Loved the traditional old fashioned drink choices.

BEST hot dogs in Winston Salem, hands down. Two all the way and a RC cola. Five stars right there.

So dang good! If you are passing through this is a must, you won’t want to miss it. Get the works — slaw — chili — onions and mustard — so good and at a price that can’t be beat! I am not usually a hot dog fan but I know I will be craving these for a long time! The BBQ sandwich was not great — pass on that and stick with the hot dogs! If you are looking to a nice place to sit down and eat this is not it! It’s small and they don’t have any seating so finding a place to eat the messy thing is up to you, but if you enjoy a whole in the wall with nice people and great food this is for you. Like so many others before me have stated, pay no attention to the name and stay away from the BBQ. I had a BBQ sandwich and a Hot Dog today. The BBQ sandwich, I had mine without slaw, really didn’t have an flavor, which should be criminal in North Carolina. The Hot Dog, on the other hand was great! It was simple, and it wasn’t overpowered with toppings. Mine had the right balance of mustard, chili, and onions that made it one of the best I’ve had in a very long time. Be warned, though. If you plan to sit down and have a nice meal, this not your place. If you don’t mind eating off the hood of your car and have a unique experience, this may be your place. They only take MC and Visa, so plan accordingly and remember, the hot dog is your friend! Bön appetit!!!

Okay, I thought the hot dogs were awesome! My wife, not so much. But, not because of the food. The place is a little rough around the edges, and she’s not to into that. However, the sanitary rating was higher than the Chipotle I just ate at so you have little to worry about on that front. If you are looking for an refined experience while eating, this is not the place. If you are looking for a unique experience with AWESOME hot dogs, this is the place! I had my dog all the way and it was great. I ended up eating my wife’s dog and it was just ketchup and mustard. I added the hot sauce to both and it was perfect. Cheerwine in a glass bottle to wash it down. I will DEFINITELY be coming back.

I’m going to admit it, I was a little disappointed! After reading all the reviews and generally hearing how awesome the hot dogs are here, I think I was just expecting too much. The people working the counter were extremely friendly and quick. Five stars on the service for sure. Those bright pink hot dogs are new to me. They certainly don’t sell those things in New England. I knew they were of that variety so it didn’t throw me off, I think I would just prefer for it not to be bright pink. The chili was okay but for me I just have not found a place to top the chili at PB’s. I also found it a bit odd that they wrapped their hotdogs to go, in napkins. The bag and napkin got all soggy from the chili. I wonder why they don’t use wax paper. Their location is a bit off of the beaten path! But it does have a nice little side area to enjoy your hot dog sitting on a tree stump outside.

Barbeque is this restaurant’s surname, but don’t let that fool you. Hotdogs from 103-year old J.S. Pulliam Barbecue are the only bread-encased food items you should get here. Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine said these hot dogs were the best in the South in 2011. These hot dogs are the quintessential red hots with a bun that is perfectly toasted on top and buttery. When you bite into it, your teeth meet the meat of the hot dog with complete aplomb. The only way to get this kind of dog is ATW(all the way). The stripes of ketchup and mustard collaborate with the fresh chopped onions and dance with the creamy white slaw and the crown of dark, tomato-tinged chili all work really well together. The barbeque? Well, you might as well be eating kerosene-flavored sawdust. Save your tastebuds and add a soda from the cooler paired with a bag of chips. Better yet, add a couple more hot dogs to your order. By the time you pull out your wallet they’ll be in a little paper sack, wrapped with napkins, ready to go out of the door.

Another one of those places with a rather strong, local following, which speaks again to the complexity and mystery of individual taste, and the power of nostalgia to cloud the mind. These seeming anomalies arise more often than not in connection with BBQ and hot dogs joints. And Pulliams is a perfect example of this — you either love or hate their hot dog, and those who love it, have done so for a long time — the sign on the right hand side of the building says that this place has been around since 1910. This quaint, funky little place makes a pretty good Southern chili dog — neon red wiener on a toasted bun, with plenty of onions, but a little thin on the chili — and this is pretty good chili, I just wish there was more of it. I don’t think this is the best HD in the Winston — I feel that PBs is the best — but this one is right up there with Little Richard’s, Hill’s Lexington BBQ, and several others just below PBs, imo. Couple of things about Pulliams — stick to the hot dog, the BBQ is truly awful, minced to the point of mush, too moist, and with a strange taste that one does not associated with good NCBBQ, and be aware that there is no seating inside this little joint. There is a porch like front with some steps, and there is a bench of sorts to the right of the entrance — most come out with their brown bag of dogs and a drink, and head for their vehicles.
