Homol’ovi is a sacred site to the Hopi people and the word means ‘place of the little hills’. Homol’ovi State Park, just north of Winslow off Highway 87, is currently closed to the public due to Arizona budget cuts but is expected to open again on 18 March 2011. Are you missing much? Well, there’s not that much to see because only two of the seven ruins present a true visual experience. However, there is a good amount of historical information presented so the visitor can paint their own picture of what life was like here in the 1200s to 1300s. In some respects, I’m glad Homol’ovi is currently closed to the public because this is such a delicate site and one that has seen its share of obvious vandalism. Pot shards litter the ground and one can imagine a strong wind blowing it all away never to be seen again.
