Fells True Value Hardware

i recently visited the store for a sale item i saw in a circular, and was coldly told «fells hardware does not participate in sales, go to rounds hardware in stoneham!»

Truly one of the last remaining neighborhood hardware stores. and I can appreciate that.

These guys are the best! If you need a black screw and they don’t have one, they’ll paint one for you. The Ryans take delight in hearing about homeowners’ challenges and helping to solve them. They were voted Citizen of the Year for a good reason — they offer good old-​fashioned, common sense solutions for reasonable prices. Where else are you greeted with a friendly «And what are we doing today?» as they await the tale of your latest project?

This is what a local small business retailer should be. They are always nice, friendly and responsive. They have good knowledge of their products, almost always have what I need and, If they don’t, let me know where to find it.

This is the quintessential mom and pop hardware. I love this place. Despite its small size, they always have whatever your need. One time I even forgot my wallet and they said don’t worry about it, pay us next time. Unbelievable. Another time my incompetent painters lost one of my shutters with the hardware attached. The shutter is easy enough to replace but how was I to get a 1930’s era cast gudgeon that was original to the house. Fells had the exact part. Apparently there are enough homes in Winchester with this hardware that people need these from time to time. The Home Depot would never stock such a part. Fells is acutely aware of what people need and what time of year to have it. Need driveway refelectors in the fall? All that’s left at the depot are the damaged ones where the reflector is cracked. Fells has plenty.

This place is simply amazing. Here’s how it works –
Walk in. Stand in the middle of the (small and overly crowded) store for about 30 seconds. Someone comes over and asks you what you need. You say it. They find it — or convince you to get something CHEAPER and BETTER and then ring you up and you leave.
If you want a scavenger hunt… go to Lowe’s.
One year they even trimmed the handle on a rake for our toddler so he could «help» with lawn care. No charge. Love it!
Apple Stores get all that press for «on the floor» customer attention. Fells True Value appears to have invented that model.

With a 100-​year-​old house, I always have something that’s broken or being replaced. Fell’s always has someone happy to help me find the piece I need, or figure out a solution to the problem of the day. On the odd occasion when they didn’t have what I need, they provided the name, address and phone number of a place that did. I used to say that the extra dime or a quarter that I give them instead of the discount house was a small cost for the service and convenience, but lately I find I spend less because I get what I need and get out.

Really nice people ~ went in to get something for a small project, and the guys made me seem as though my whopping $ 6.00 purchase was the highlight of their day. Very helpful, and they seemed to know everyone who came in while I was there. I love those small-​town places, and will definitely return!

These guys have been here forever.
I’ve been buying from them for… well, a long time now!
Same guys run it that ran it when my grandpa went here. They all know me by name. They know most of us by name.
Nice little hardware store. You usually find what you need.

Every 5 star review is accurate. I’ve been going here for years and the service is great. I’ve literally gone in for no more than a 5 cent screw and was still treated like their best customer. I love to do business locally anyhow. Sorry Home Depot.

If Fells Hardware doesn’t have what you’re looking for, they know where you can get it and don’t mind sending you to a competitor — though they blanch at sending you to «Cheapo Depot» — though they will if they have to.
They also have sound advice and guidance for most household projects. On top of having an incredible array of everyday and seasonal products and knowledge, Kevin, Bruce, Jay and the rest of the gang are the nicest, friendliest people you’ll ever hope to meet. They make living in Winchester a joy.
PS — The box on Munchkins every Saturday morning, and peanuts in the shell the rest of the week add to the pleasure of just stopping in to say hi.

The best little hardware store ever. Same wonderful people ready to help you out year after year. They ask you if you want help, you don’t have to chase them down. They always have exactly what I need. How they manage to do that in such a little place I have no idea.
I was amazed when they recognized my Dad, and he’d only been there once before.

Always good quality merchandise and good quality employees! Staff is always helpful and friendly. Nothing like a neighborhood hardware store compared to the inattentiveness of a big box chain like Home Depot or Lowes. This place is fast, efficient, helpful and most of all friendly.
