Came up to lake placid for New Years with two other couples and my fiancé. My good friend has a house in the area and recommended this place. We had a blast every night, and the bartender Jim made our New Years so awesome, we came back the next the next three nights too. It wasn’t slammed, but we were out to enjoy one another’s company. But it wouldn’t have been as awesome without Jim. Also– great Irish coffees! We didn’t eat here because we had made plans each day, but the food looked awesome too. Quaint, comfortable, warm, and friendly. Thanks Jim!

Last time we stopped it was dead. Just a few people inside. Most were seated outside. I ordered a burger well done and it came out pretty rare. I waited about 15 minutes before we found one waitress to come back to fix it. By then we had to leave so we had to take the recooked burger to go. The waitress offered us free soup for the mistake and we politely declined although we did see a 3 dollar credit on our bill which was nice being that we didn’t even ask for anything. The burger was pretty good when we finally did eat it later that night. Not bad pricing too… burger and fries only 1095.

Went to RF McDougal’s for dinner. Service was fine and food pretty good. Nice stop near the Flume Trails. We had the fish and chips, beef tenderloin tips, Mac and cheese Steak and caesar salad. Everyone was happy with their choices. All good but not phenomenal. If you’re looking for a quick dinner this probably isn’t your choice however we were here on a rainy night which was fine.

This is a great place to sit by the Ausable River on a nice airy deck and enjoy the trout and the local brew. The Fish and Chips was pretty decent and the Cajun Trout with Crab meat was very good. It’s not a cheap place, nor too expensive — an early dinner around 5.30−6.00 is probably the best time to go.

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Average food, average prices and average service. The one thing I would recommend is the smoked trout, listed among their appetizers, which really outshone our meals by a considerable margin

When I came here with my fiancé, we were a part of a Saturday night dinner rush during our most recent stay in Lake Placid. Six months ago we ate at The Hungry Trout upstairs. I loved The Hungry Trout, but R F McDougall’s paled in comparison. I believe both restaurants operate out of the same kitchen, which really made this dinner unbelievable. You can actually order off of The Hungry Trout’s menu if you’d like, and that’s nice because the two menus are very difference. I ordered the Fish and Chips, because it smelled awesome when I walked in. If the fish was fresh, I’m curious to find out how mine managed to border on frozen in the center. That being said, the parts of the fish that were cooked were awesome, and the fries that it came with were good, too. The tarter sauce was good, and the cole slaw was different in a very good way. The dining room isn’t huge, but big enough that our two servers were stretched thin throughout our stay. Our server did a good enough job, but I was left waiting longer than I’d like to get a refill. The walls are covered in fishing signs and it’s a really cozy/fun atmosphere. It’s pretty loud, though, and while it’s not the loudest restaurant I’ve been in, it’s hard to carry on a conversation without shouting over everyone else trying to shout in order to have their own conversation. I didn’t hate this place, but I definitely wouldn’t give them another chance unless it were earlier in the evening or a weekday.
