This parish is great! The faith community dates back to the early 1800’s. Much of the Catholic growth in Westwego was aided by the tragic hurricane of 1893 which wiped out the Chenière Caminada area(west of Grand Isle). Construction of the current church began in 1955 and was dedicated by Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel in 1956. The sanctuary is beautiful and still retains some of the many traditional elements found in churches built at this time; communion rails, curtained confessionals and a majestic centered tabernacle and high alter. Fr Edward Grice serves as pastor here and to the mission church, Holy Guardian Angels in Bridge City. If you are ever on the west bank near the Nile Mile Point area(maybe headed to Banting’s nursery to pick up some plants and flowers!) or just want to check out the newly renovated Huey P. Long bridge(it’s amazing what has been done to this bridge; so nice!.. When completed in 2013, it will be the ideal choice for accessing the West Bank for the foreseeable future… much less congested than the Crescent City Connection!) or headed out to TPC Louisiana for a round of golf, make a stop by OLPS in Westwego for Mass. It’s a great opportunity to remind yourself of the goal in this life; which is to attain eternal life with God and how to achieve this goal through our actions and prayers! Also check out the Westwego Farmer’s Market which is held every Saturday during the cooler months!
