Beach City Stairs

Kevin came to our home and discussed our staircase remodel. I had asked to change the time of our appointment a few days before but he didn’t call us back until the day of our meeting. I asked him why he didn’t call back sooner and he said he’d been at a trade show. I told him I’d appreciate a phone call back in a timely manner. He seemed ok when we met him and we discussed some options. He emailed us a quote and I emailed him some questions and asked for another quote. He never answered the questions and emailed a cookie cutter quote. I called him and left a message asking the questions again. He never called back. I would never do business with someone who doesn’t call back in a timely manner. We will be doing business with another contractor.

I’m guessing this is a newer company because the owner Kevin definitely needs to learn a thing or two about running this business. My husband organized our stair project through the owner Kevin but once he got our down payment he was never to be seen again. He told us our stairs would take 4 – 5 days which is ridiculous. It ended up taking 3 – 4 days a week over 3 weeks. One big issue was Kevin never showed up on his job site and he only had ONE guy out working on our stairs. The guy that was here was good but how can one person get a job done in a timely manner?! There were a couple days of demo followed by days of constructing the new stairs and then finally 3 days of painting and another day to put the balusters in. I had to be our project manager checking every little thing everyday because a lot was not being done as we wanted. We had sent him numerous pictures of stairs during our designing process but he never when over many of the details that should be addressed prior to construction like if the newels would be painted or stained, how high the banisters should be etc… These are HUGE things and they were both done wrong and then when they had to be redone we were charged for it and made to feel like it was our fault when Kevin had never confirmed both items. When I would email Kevin with issues he would never email me back. He’d end up talking to my husband but never acknowledging me or my emails which was annoying. I even sent him an email towards the end of our project and I still haven’t heard back. One of the issues I have still is that the white paint they used on our stairs does not match the white paint in our house which I was told it would (I’ll post a pic). We use «Swiss coffee» as the white in our house which is a standard color and premixed at Home Depot. We’ve never had a problem having it matched, even when we had cabinetry painted so why it doesn’t match is beyond me. It’s basically ultra white and an eyesore. I addressed this in my last email but never heard back… I probably would have done a 3 star rating had I gotten a reply email.
If you are ready to have one guy work on your stairs for a couple weeks and to be your own project manager then go for it. Our stairs turned out good but it was an annoying project because there was never anyone here to check the work or to make sure things were being done correctly. I had to personally check the work everyday and then organize what needed to be done.
Our stairs turned out good but I would use a different company if I ever did a project like this again.

Had Beach City Stairs install wrought iron balusters with wood railing and newels. I should have been alarmed when it took them less than a day to do the woodwork portion. Several days later, Kevin sent out a guy to stain (a contractor who does not work for him). He was very rushed, complaining about the size of the job which he had been told was smaller, and just seemed like he couldn’t wait to finish and get out. The woodworking guys had forgotten to leave a piece of the unstained wood, so he ran to his truck and got a 3″ x 3″ piece of wood to use as a sample. I’m not even sure it was maple like our railings and certainly too small. He applied a stain and asked me to sign off on the color. I told him I didn’t think it matched well, so he reapplied a different color. When I told him I still didn’t think it was a good match, he told me it wasn’t going to get any better and assured me it would look fine once it was applied to the entire staircase, so I stupidly signed off on it. Of course it’s a terrible match, and after it was stained, we noticed that one of the newels on the bottom step was set back ½″ farther than the other. It’s now very noticeable due to the terrible match of color with the stairs. When I called Kevin (owner) and told him about the poor workmanship, he responded that it was «good enough». He sent somebody out to verify the problems which they admitted were valid, but then said that the only people who would notice were designers or people in the trade. After a lot of back and forth, he discounted the project $ 500 (it’s going to cost me close to $ 1,000 to get it fixed). He said I had to take responsibility for signing off on the finish. I finally got tired of arguing over the add’l $ 500 and dropped it. However, I certainly wouldn’t use this company again. They obviously rushed through the job, the quality is poor at best, and the owner is unprofessional.

Got a follow up call apologizing for missing appt. I guess its better than nothing and it shows that the guy cares about his business.

First let me say that my husband asked me not to write a review at all, but me being me, I want to let other people know what my experience was so they can do better. Otherwise, what good is Unilocal?Anyway, I had high hopes for these guys. Kevin seemed super nice and showed us some amazing photos on his ipad, so I was excited. BTW, this was not an inexpensive proposition — we have a small home and almost 5,000.00 for part of this project is not something to be taken lightly. We still need someone to come patch the drywall and paint the stairway, which we knew upfront that BC Stairs wasn’t going to manage. Bottom line, this was a big deal to me and something I wanted for a very long time.
My impression was (and I got this impression from Kevin repeatedly stating ‘my crew’) that Kevin and Co. has a ‘crew.’ What my experience was is that my job was subcontracted to people that work for Beach City Stairs but they have their own businesses. I don’t have a problem with that, but be upfront about it and that way we can work WITH you. And the bigger problem is that when you operate this way, there has to be a Project Manager (and it shouldn’t be me) — someone who calls me (not me calling them to say ‘where are your guys?) and asks ‘did so and so show up today,? did they do a good job? Did they do everything WE promised?’ This did not happen. We had no-​shows two times and we had to call Beach City (al-​l-​l-​l-​l their numbers) to ask where they were. Car trouble. They thought it was tomorrow (which the crew denied saying — they said BC canceled them, last minute). AND when the crew showed up the day they were SUPPOSED to stain the stairs, they couldn’t because the last guy didn’t leave a piece of wood for them to stain as a sample. What? Are you kidding me? Had there been a Project Manager, this crucial (the crew left and 5 guys had to come back on a SUNDAY) step; leave a piece of wood, would have not been overlooked. Also, I hate the blame game. Own it and fix it — I don’t want to hear how it’s everyone else’s fault. It’s your business and its your responsibility to manage the project. My husband was so pi**ed that he wouldn’t even let them come and pick up the remaining balance — he mailed it to them and told them so when, ‘surprise’ they know how to communicate when there is money/​payment involved. The day after the job was done, I had messages on my cell phone, my home phone, my work phone — and when Kevin called my husband, my husband pretty much told him, I’ll mail it to you — I don’t want to see you again.
So, did the job finally get done? Yes. Were we happy with the stairs? Yes. Will we recommend them to all of our friends that want to have their carpet ripped up? No.

Very happy with our new stairs completed last month. We described what we were looking for to Kevin, who guided us to the right product and design for our budget. Kevin and his crew kept to the estimate amount exactly and we appreciated his working with us on scheduling due to our having our hardwood floors being installed during the same week.

I have to begin by saying I NEVER post reviews or comments on Unilocal; but in this case I just had to. After two near falls on my carpeted and unsightly basement stairs, I finally decided to get them redone. I called three contractors, and Kevin was the final of the three. I instantly knew I would be working with him. After listening to my concerns, primarily (safety, safety, and then aesthetics), Kevin kindly and patiently explained how we could go about remodeling the stairs to the point that I would feel safe. (The treads (flat part) were barely to standard and the whole pitch felt off), so that every time I went up AND down those stairs I was afraid of falling. Turned out pitch was fine, but Kevin suggested we widen the treads to a more comfortable width for foot placement and discussed the variety of woods I could choose from. After doing some research I came across a picture of a tile staircase that was gorgeous! I showed it to Kevin and he totally agreed it was doable! That right there made my day! The finished product was maple treads (lighter shade) with beautiful Italian tile risers (reddish design). Which I have to add, Kevin and his team went through all of the work to find the closest matching tile to what was in the picture, he brought the sample to my house, and I was able to choose the tile from the comfort of my own home. That was a plus in my book. The entire job, from beginning to end was a very pleasant experience. I truly can not say enough about Kevin and the professionalism, and skill of the entire crew. One of the most notable aspects of this project was that a different person, specializing in a different skill showed up to do just that job. From the carpenter, to the painter, to the stainer, tiler, and all the way to Travis, who not only oversaw the entire project, but also finished with the grout work. All I can say is that, EVERYTIME, I go up and down my stairs, I smile, a very happy and satisfied feeling comes over me for having chosen Kevin and his company. I will absolutely, for sure, call Kevin if I ever need this type of work done again. If you are looking for a professional, courteous, and prompt crew, Kevin and his guys are the ones to call. I hope this helps those who are in the process of choosing a stair contractor! I know it can be a tricky situation, which is why I’m so glad I lucked out with Beach City Stairs.

I can’t say enough great things about the whole process with Beach City Stairs. We had an older railing that wasn’t up to today’s childproofing standards so we either needed to call a babyproofing company or replace the the railings entirely. Given that babyproofing would have been pretty expensive and probably wouldn’t have looked that great, we decided to invest the money into new railings. Kevin (the owner) came out to our house and provided a very detailed estimate free of charge. He also showed us dozens of options and gave us recommendations at multiple price points as well. We also got estimates from a couple other places. Beach City Stairs wasn’t the cheapest, but we felt most comfortable with them.
A few days before the installation, we got a call to reconfirm the start date. On day 1, they were right on time and were extremely polite and accommodating. We have curved railings going all the way upstairs, so it was pretty amazing that they could build them from scratch. After a couple days of construction, the railings were stained by an equally polite and efficient crew. The balusters were put in the following day and everything looks amazing. Their staining crew will come back to do some last minute touch ups, but it looks amazing already. The craftsmanship is second to none.
We are extremely happy and definitely will recommend them to friends and family.
