Grey Sail has done some great things for beer in RI. Their story is awesome and they make some great beers. Wish the tasting room hours were a bit longer/more accessible, but overall its worth scheduling time for a visit.

December 2015, visited with a party of 4 on a Sunday. One bartender was very helpful, the other not so much. I think they prefer the regular’s that will re-fill their jugs to people just«tasting». Very close to downtown WEsterly, so we are glad that we stopped by.

I’m a huge craft beer fan and this brewery makes one of my fave beers captains daughter. I decided it was time to pay a visit. It’s located on canal street and really easy to find. Parking was easy too. We were greeted warmly and quickly by the staff. They explained how they did tastings. You paid eight for the tasting and you got to pick a barrel or tulip glass to keep. That’s an awesome deal. You got five samples and they were generous ones. I have tried all of their beers before and enjoyed them but it was delicious right from the source and super fresh. It’s a small place but we had plenty of room to stand and relax and enjoy our beers. You can purchase or refill growlers or Mini growlers and the prices are reasonable. We had a great experience. If your looking to go check out a cool brewery this is a must visit. If you go bring me back a growler of captains daughter. ;)

Grey Sail was just one of stop on our Saturday self-guided brewery tour. We found it ironic that this was the first stop on the tour in which we didn’t feel we were the only«grey» sailors. Still plenty of the hipster crowd, but enough of us geezers to make us feel at ease. Please, don’t take that as a slap. It’s still a cool place, even if us old folks liked it(okay, so I’m only 50-something). This was probably the best deal on our tour. Well worth a visit. It’s small, mostly standing-room-only with a few high tops here and there. Some souvenir swag overlooked the shiny brewing area. But the beer is why you’re here, and Grey Sail comes through. You pay $ 8 for a tasting. Choose you’re favorite souvenir glass(pilsner, pint, Ball jar type, etc) and they give you five samples. And oh boy… bring a designated driver! Most of us consider a tasting as just a couple of sips. Not at Grey Sail. They filled our swag mug at least half-way each time. It was great, but Grey Sail was the third stop on our tour, and I was already pushing the hammered zone. I actually gave away my fifth beer token. About the beer: I had a seasonal ginger infused beer which was absolutely incredible. I don’t generally like flavored beers, but this broke the mold. A smooth, rich, IPA. I could have just had this as all five samples. Another IPA was terrible. Sad to be so blunt, but really… it was one of their top billed items, but it smelled stanky and tasted the same. I’m sorry I can’t provide the names. I have their brew list, but I don’t want to give bad info. Ask for a tiny taste before committing. Overall, this was a fine stop on our tour. It would have been nice to have some food available to soak up the suds, but that is a very minor complaint… it’s a brewery, not a restaurant. Highly recommended, even without five stars.

Grey sail seems to be in every bar I go to in this area, and has a very loyal fan following. We got to the brewery as they were opening, as we do for most things, and were the first at the tasting bar. They had a strange token system for tastings, and after reading the other reviews mention generous pours, we decided to split a tasting. WOW were we glad we decided to split a tasting! Each pour was easily half a glass, and even when we asked for less, we still got half a pint glass every time. The beers are decent, but nothing that I personally wanted to fill a growler of and bring home. I can’t believe they pour so much beer just for tastings… but I guess the more the merrier? If you intend to do a tasting all by yourself be sure to designate a driver because you will absolutely not be able to drive after this hefty flight. Bottoms up!

Grey Sail offers delicious beer inside of a cozy tasting room in the heart of Westerly, RI. It’s the best deal in town! Five dollars for five tasters & you get to keep the glass. The employees are very knowledgeable about the beer and über friendly.

While visiting my brother, my family and I went here and had a blast and returned the next day to get more. Beer was top notch and the bartenders were very friendly. We paid $ 8 to get a beer can glass(to keep) and five generous samples. Growlers are $ 5(32– and 64oz) and fills are very reasonably priced(start at $ 9). They also had some Avenue N in cans for sale. All of the beer was clean tasting and very good. The only down side is that I can’t get Captains Daughter in Virginia yet… may have to become a bootlegger… yes, it’s that good!

I liked everything about this place… the beer was fantastic, the building is great, and the service is top-notch. Easy to get to and easy parking. I enjoyed all the beers but I would say my faves were the two on the opposite ends of the spectrum, the summer seasonal, Hazy Day, and a smoky porter, I forgot the name. Smoky Porter maybe. John was pouring today and he was knowledgeable about the beers, and handled the crowd smoothly. I’ll definitely be back.

Nice little brewery right near downtown. They give you tokens to get your drinks. The guys behind the bar was very nice. I like the flagship beer here. They also sell some other products like candles and coasters. I like the glass they let us keep. Overall a cool place

-$ 5 gets you a pint glass(or $ 9 for a stem wear glass) and 5 samples of beer. –The brewmasters are very knowledgeable, very personable, and love their jobs! –There are 2 other local breweries(Cottrell and Beer’d) pretty close by, and can make for a fun rainy weekend day brew tour –Yes, they sell growlers and howlers to go, but no 6 packs. –Beer was GOOD!

Can I give it a 6th star rating? They are so great here. I was asking where I could to get some captains daughter since they were sold out. After a few minutes Jen, one of the owners, shows up with a case that was destined for the distributor. How cool to make sure fans get their beer. Come here and don’t forget to tip John.

Best beer in RI and I have tasted most of them. The Captain’s Daughter might be the best DIPA I have ever had. The Leaning Chimney is a great Porter and they always have something new on the chalkboard! The atmosphere is «chill» with a great selection of music on vinyl playing in the background. Allman Brothers and fresh beer… lord I’m southbound!

Of the breweries I toured in Rhode Island, this was my favorite. The staff were cool, the beer was good, and the bartender seemed largely disinterested in actually collecting the tokens they give out which means $ 5 can get you a pint glass and about all the beer you cared to drink. Sweet deal.

I’ve been on a mission to visit more local breweries, so when I found myself out in Westerly one weekend in August Grey Sail was on the agenda. For $ 7 I now own a pretty cool beer can shaped Grey Sail glass which bought me my tasting. My husband and I were the first ones there when they opened so we had fun chatting with the woman serving us at the bar and she explained more about each beer we tried. We bought a growler of a couple of the beers. Something to remember — if you bring the empty growler back to Grey Sail to refill you don’t need to pay the $ 5 for another container — you just pay for the fill…

We were at Nappatree all day on Saturday, didn’t leave till 5pm. So I called Greysail, and sure enough they were staying open a few extra hours. So we went by for a quick visit, and were very pleased with the whole experience. We each bought a $ 7 tasting glass that is shaped like a beer can and we’re given 5 chips for 5 tastings. The menu choices made it very difficult to pick, but all were excellent with my favorites being the One Hop Blonde, the 2nd Anniversary Quad, and the Stout. The Flagship was lovely and super crisp. Hopefully next time we are in town we will get a chance to really stay and visit, get to know motel about the place.
