Looks like a condemned building from the road, but warm and friendly inside. We had two very good breakfasts for under $ 13. The pies are made by a multiple fair ribbon winner and are to die for. A bit off the beaten path but well worth it. A hidden gem.

As mentioned by some of the reviews below, Henry’s looks like it came off the set of a Mad Max movie. But the service is very friendly and the food is reasonably good, so don’t be alarmed.(The interior is a bit nicer than the outside, as well.) My wife and I had bean soup(decent, not great), cornbread(Southern style… no sugar and little flour, which I appreciated) and these little«potato cakes» which were fried patties of mashed potatoes. Sadly, they were out of pie when we got there kind of late in the day. They were apologetic and told us they’d save us some next time if we call. Yeah, it’s that kind of place. If you’re the type(as we are) that won’t darken the door of a franchise and you’re hungry, Henry’s is a good stop.

Best breakfast in West Jefferson. Matter in fact, if you exclude McDonalds, it’s the only breakfast on West Jeff. About 2 miles out of town, Unilocal didn’t even pick it up when I was searching for a place to eat. Had to ask a cop where to go. Ordered JDs Omelet and a side of bacon. Waitress asked how I wanted my bacon cooked? Never got that question before and I told her however the cook wants to make it. It was outstanding! And quick! Coffee is good too. Don’t get turned off by the outside. Looks like a dive, as it’s in an old gas station from the 50s.

Henry’s: A place that looks like it should belong in some post apocalyptic video game. I had to try this place out after a long drive along good old route 40. Blink and you’ll miss this desolate and abandoned place. Most everything about Henry’s is a time capsule. Upon our arrival at Henry’s we walked in to a discrepancy for someone who ordered $ 70 worth of food and refused to pay for it due to restrictions on their gift certificate. So, with a counter full of to-go boxes, and a frustrated and bewildered staff and by STAFF I mean the kitchen cook and one waitress, we took our chances and inquired. «Anything good in there?» The husband settled for an open face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes. Having craved for something of red meat for most of the day I opted for the bacon burger and side of fries. All were mediocre and just regular diner fare, but dessert is what this place has going for it. My husband tried the blackberry pie and the banana meringue pie. I being greedy also got a slice of banana meringue pie all to myself. The pie was pretty excellent. Pie connoisseurs will be not disappointed. Only one other place in Ohio makes pies with meringue that good.(SEEURBANAAIRPORTCAFE) Prices here are CHEAP folks… we’re talking the days before the recession with burgers around 3 bucks and platters under $ 7. This place is probably great for the surrounding warehouses and commerce in the area for lunch breaks. If you’re driving by with a hankering for something sweet… then at least stop by for some pie to go… as did many locals while we were here. Henry’s is a greasy spoon/diner at best. Ambiance seekers look elsewhere. ****CASHONLY!!!

Neither Roadfood nor Unilocal!could really prepare us for quite how desolate Henry’s looks from the outside as you roll into the parking lot. I was quickly asking myself: «Is this really the right place?» «Are they open?» «Is this the home of a serial killer?» Rest assured, you are in the right place– the right place for pie. We didn’t even try to trouble ourselves with savory food. We got a slice of butterscotch pie and a slice of cherry. Butterscotch was very good, with an impressively thick meringue. But cherry was outstanding, bursting with ripe summer fruit and not overly sweet.(Thank you, thank you, for not murdering your cherries with syrup!). Really, the only thing wrong was that the crust was insufficiently crunchy or flaky. It was very tasty. I’m sure it was very good right when it came out of the oven. But whatever the pie had been doing since it finished baking had resulted in a limp, soggy, crust. It was still a delicious cherry pie, but the sogginess made us decide not to grab a whole pie(or two) and spirit them home. If you go back, be sure to ask which pieces are freshest, or maybe see if they can crisp the crust up for you somehow. Even in the condition we had it, though, it was darn good, and worth a stop.

Four stars for the pie, but only 2 or 3 for the meals. I came for the pie, and I was not disappointed(well, a bit that they didn’t have sugar cream pie, but I’ll call ahead next time.) Made by a father and daughter, and clearly by pie experts, we had four pieces between us. Stellar: Peanut butter cream with meringue topping, and pumpkin with whipped cream. The other two, blackberry and custard, were darn good, just not«best ever.» The crust on all was very good. The entrees, on the other hand, were spotty, A burger and a chopped steak(I think) sandwich were panned. My wife said her roast beef split(open faced sandwich) was fine but not very warm. My chicken and noodles were very good. Not like my grandmother’s, but good in a different way. There seemed to be a lot of turmeric in them; not overwhelming, but definitely affecting the taste and color. The sides were good. Singled out were the baked beans and deviled eggs. None of this stuff was fancy; just home-style stuff. Reasonably priced(oh, and cash only.) The service was great– very friendly and helpful. I wish I could say the whole meal was great, but though I will be back it will mainly be for the pie. It’s worth a detour just fo
