I love Alessi. I love that it’s a playful mix of fun and fancy. Classic and futuristic. Bold and subtle. There’s something for everyone here. I love that every item in the store is designed by a world renowned architect or designer. There’s a unique, creative thought process behind every single product. That’s what I love about Alessi. I always leave feeling inspired.

Alessi… Alessi…Alessi (Can you tell I like to say the name?) Very cool Italian based modern housewares and accent shop. This place has a unique display of furniture in very vibrant colors and interesting cut designs. They make everyday items from plastic and metal designed by famous designers such as Philippe Starck. Alessi has been particularly associated with the notion of designer objects — otherwise ordinary tools and objects executed as high design, particularly in a post-modern mode. This particular location is split in two main sections(home furniture & home accents). Quality Customer Service. Efficiency at it’s best. Needed a few things for an upcoming shoot and HAD to have items from this store. Pieces that I needed were not in stock. Actually, the item had been discontinued but the staff were more than accommodating. One team member really took the initiative and reached out to the manufacturing warehouse in Italy(to see if the pieces I wanted were in stock there). They were. So he had them ordered and sent directly to my office, free of charge. Pieces arrived BEFORE the date he initially gave me. I paid for the items in-store and everything arrived just before the shoot date. Everything worked out. Lovely experience here.

I was prompted to write this review after reading the previous two posts. They were less than charitable. Alessi is a company that has produced iconic homewares for some time now. While I’m not a fan of every design they sell, I would say that they exemplify one important principal: buy well, buy once. In the disposable age this is refreshing to me. I have object I bought from Alessi in the 80s that are still as functional and stylish as the day I bought them. Yes they charge more than you would expect for nearly every item in that store but that is more a reflection of shipping and import duty than anything else. In Europe Alessi seems far less expensive yet has a good reputation for both build quality and design. If you like well designed everyday objects that last a lifetime then, I would check Alessi out. If IKEA is all you need, then I’ll see you in the line while I’m buying candles, napkins and pot holders.

I have to agree with Kai. This place is sort of THE Los Angeles cliché. It’s the type of place that the main character of the movie, the charming rube with the southern accent, would walk into so that the store clerks could be dismissive and rude and the lovable rube would mistakenly assume that the decimal point was misplaced. My friend saw what he thought was a small serving dish… for nuts or a sauce or something minimal like that… asked… and it turns out it is literally a place to prop your spoon in the kitchen when you’re stirring a sauce. It’s chrome, VERY shiny, tiny, and almost $ 40. THAT kind of place. The quality didn’t really stand out as ultra-high end, but the price certainly did. The clerk wasn’t terrible, but certainly didn’t pay us much attention either. You know what, I think I’ll stick with CB2… bouzhy by my blue-collar standards, trashy by A-list LA standards… but works for me for about ¼ the price.

If you’ve ever awakened in that nether-region separating consciousness form hangover after a night of too many martinis, textbooks, or whatever… – and though to yourself, «I really want to decorate my kitchen and bathroom, but don’t want to cheap out at IKEA» — then Alessi just may well be your bag. Or rather, not your bag, but your $ 100 art deco powder room trash receptacle, or cat water dish with dadaist tendencies. Or bare metal pitcher for those days when you’re entertaining Edvard Munch on your veranda in fascist-occupied Norway. Alessi is not for everybody. What it is, is expensive and artsy — and small. About the size of two taco trucks back to back, minus the tacos and low prices and horchata. The service is kind of indifferent — I don’t think they’re terribly used to people actually coming in. Or perhaps I just came too early(I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere) At Alessi you can find what for the most part amounts to IKEA designs albeit at higher prices, lower selection, and at times only marginally superior quality. Take care of decorating some basic kitchen and bathroom accessories at Alessi, though quite honestly Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and even Bed Bath & Beyond give you equal quality, equal or much lower prices, and less of a feeling that you’re at the Getty Center and shouldn’t be touching anything. Psst… Come on baby, distract the clerk’s attention while I leave a fingerprint on the stainless steel toilet brush holster. The vandal Kai strikes again!
