I’ve been here since 2007. As time goes, the business seems going downhill, but their food has never miss its quality. Their sushi is always fresh and tasty. The only thing is that they always run out of red bean ice cream. But I’ll always love eating here and will support it as long as it’s there. I would definite recommend this place!

I hate to do this — the staff is friendly, but I’m not a fan of the food. The sushi rolls were a little off. I ordered a spicy tuna roll as well as a shrimp tempura roll. The shrimp tempura roll was okay, but the spicy tuna roll was just mushy, as if the rice was way overcooked and too much sauce was added to the tuna. I also ordered an appetizer of chicken teriyaki which was two small plain pieces of chicken on a stick… just unimpressed. I’d be willing to try it again… but I’m not rushing to go back.

Oh it pains me so to do this… I’ve been going to Fuji since I was very young — basically when they first opened and they were packed! Over the years, whenever I stop by town for a visit my father and I would plan a sushi night here and I don’t know what happened but it seems like every time we go less and less people are there or like this last time ZERO — now that is a quiet atmosphere. The people that own it have always been friendly to me, so I can’t complain about that. Only the awkwardness of when she scolds her kids who are running around the restaurant really affects me. Other than that the fish quality has gone down. I don’t know what happened this literally was one of my favorite sushi places. However this time, the rolls weren’t well made and the fish definitely seemed like it had seen better days even my father(who is basically a human garbage disposal) couldn’t eat it Overall, I wouldn’t continue to recommend this place. It is overpriced for the quality of fish and the owners just seem defeated and sad. The freakishly quiet, empty restaurant doesn’t help either.

We love this place. One of us is a sushi lover who has been to all of the area sushi bars. He loves the sushi here best of all. I love the other foods here and often make a whole meal out of appetizers such as gyoza and negamaki. We like the homey feel of the place, the great friendliness of the staff, and the fact that the restaurant is quiet and peaceful, unlike most of the other Japanese restaurants that seem to feel you need a circus to enjoy your food. One reason the place is often empty is that much of its business is carry-out; it’s on a major route home from Hartford for many people. We also find that many people come here later in the evening, in our experience. I recommend this restaurant.

This is the fourth restaurant that I am reviewing since visiting the Hartford area on business. And unfortunately I have to say that of the four Asian places it is the worst… Unlike the other restaurant I did not consult Unilocal before heading out to them. That was my mistake… May I suggest you heed the cautions of the other reviewers, because they are valid. I visited this past Friday(15Feb) because I got off from work early. The exterior looked inviting considering the area. The restaurant was completely dead, i was the only patron, granted it was 11:30, not quite lunch time, but honestly it didn’t matter… I was actually a little excited because I was looking forward to really fresh sushi!!! I was so disappointed… I told the waitress that this was my first time and what the house specialty was… she seemed confused by the question, ultimately she just pointed at the daily special… no worries… I ordered that as well as the sashimi combo nothing tells you more about the quality of the sushi than sashimi. It was all disappointing. The«special» was just a dressed up jalapeño roll(something you can get at your local grocery), the over bearing and you could not taste the sushi, additionally the sashimi tasked«old», literally on its last leg, just before you have start dressing it up… lol, like in the special… It took me a little while to put my finger on what was«off» about the place, as many sushi lovers know, it is not the ambiance or the décor of a sushi spot that determines the quality of the sushi, but the sushi chief!!! That is all that matters… Speaking of which… I’m Asian, I was in my work clothes, so to the credit of the waitress and the Sushi Chief, they kept there voices down, they were speaking an Asian Language, but it was not Japanese… Granted I have visited a lot of sushi places with non-nippon chefs, and everything tasted great. Eventually, the waitress asked about my race, and that is when I learned all of the details… Granted, it is not important, but it actually fills in a lot of blanks, especially when you read the other reviews. The lack of service, the attitude when patrons who are dissatisfied… I would dare say, that the«good» reviews where from customers who are not sushi fanatics… and the«bad» reviews, like mine or from sushi hounds… I don’t like tearing down anyone/place, but I know that I would appreciate a candid review if I was new to the area… Cheers, Kum-bae!!!

I’m giving them two stars to be nice. My friend ordered something I forget what it was but it was better than what I had. I had some rolls that were lame. I got a spicy tuna roll and a Philadelphia roll. They didn’t even use smoked salmon in the Philly. I wouldn’t have minded either if it was just fresh tasting but it didn’t taste fresh at all. I would rather have a restaurant make one thing and have it be fresh then try to pull of a full menu of garbage. It’s like what do you do when you walk into a place and the carpets are dirty and the food is bad? I guess just be happy you learned to stay away. I had the same thing with the lady copping an attitude as some one else mentioned. How can you mess up miso soup? I’m sure if you hit this place on a the right day you could get something decent but why even bother taking the chance? I’m also sure if you hit this place on the wrong day you could get food poisoning.

I went to Fuji Sushi with my family. Being a huge fan sushi and eating it regularly I got my favorites: Spicy Yellow Tail and salmon avocado rolls. The salmon avocado roll was good, the spicy yellow tail was the WORSTROLL I HAVEEVERHAD, but I did not complain. When paying the bill she asked how we enjoyed our meals, both my sister and mother didnt like their chicken meal(but said nothing) and I said That the yellow tail roll was awful. She replied with«Thats too bad, everyone else likes it» She then copped an attitude and walked away. Due to the owners attitude and the bad yellow tail roll, I would never come here again. fail.

This place has been a favorite of mine for years. It’s bare-bones, no-frills sushi, but I think that’s what I love about it. Just a few booths, a smattering of tables and a sushi bar make up this place. The woman behind the counter is pleasant but gives you plenty of room to breathe throughout the meal. I’ve been here anywhere from the lunch peak to a «busy» Friday night and it’s never very crowded, so sometimes the servers do tend to seem like they loom about the tables. The plus side is that service is very fast. When I was dating, this was one of my favorite places to come because you don’t have to fight to hear your conversation. As for the important part(the food), I’ve never had a bad meal here. I usually stick to the sushi, but the appetizers are all outstanding(beef negimaki being my favorite. They cook it just right!) as well. The fish is fresh and even my picky girlfriend will test out their roll creations now and then. I’ve also had the pleasure of making a special request for a roll I’d had at Ginza. I’ve done this at other places and felt like I was bothering the chef or the server, but the roll came out perfect and I didn’t feel like a bother at all. The prices are very reasonable and I’ll drive in from Downtown Hartford for their lunch specials. If you’re looking for a full restaurant experience with the décor and ambiance, I wouldn’t look here. But for getting a nice dinner with friends while Japanese hits play on the speakers, try them out.

A few of my officemates and I got take out from here recently for lunch and I wasn’t terribly impressed with my order. I got a lunch special that came with an assortment of sushi and a tuna roll. The fish didn’t taste as fresh compared to what I’ve had at other places and overall quality was comparable to or maybe just a touch above grocery store sushi. In all honesty, it really didn’t taste like much of anything. That was also the case for the soup and salad that came with it. Just kind of bland. Not good, not bad, just ok. Tough time deciding between two and three stars but I’ll round up to a three to give them the benefit of the doubt since this was my one and only experience here.

This place has the best sushi I’ve ever had, hands down. It’s quiet and never too busy, which I love, since I’m a rather quiet person myself and don’t like noisy places. Their starter miso soup is delicious. I always order the crunchy sweet potato roll(my favorite!), unagi(eel), salmon roll, and California roll. Every time I’ve been here, it’s been fresh, served promptly, and absolutely delectable. The meal ends with a small bowl of pineapple. I usually don’t care for canned pineapple, but I thought it was pretty good. I’ve been here three times: twice with a boyfriend, and once with a friend. Every time, service was prompt and friendly. The waitress even recognized me after the first time. Overall, a great place for sushi, the only place I’ll have sushi now.

We wanted to try a sushi place that wasn’t popular and ended up at Fiji Japanese Restaurant because we were at the Puppy Center. The restaurant is in a plaza with tons of other little eateries. It is hard to miss the big sign. Food: We started off with the stinky tofu, which is not stinky tofu but rather fried tofu. I had stinky tofu in Taiwan and this is nothing close to it. It appears they cut up tofu and breaded it lightly then deep fried it. If you want to experience stinky tofu this isn’t the real thing. We weren’t sure what we wanted that evening so we went with the Love Boat to simplify things since the Sea Bass was not available, that was a total disappointment. The presentation was eh nothing special. The fish was fresh and we didn’t have any complaints. Our meal ended with canned pineapples. I’m a pineapple snob. I hate fruit from the can because its saturated with sugary syrup. I wish they would just serve cut up oranges that would have been a better option. Ambiance: Any place that has booth seating gets a plus from me. The place is on the dark older side for me. I wouldn’t take a girl here for a first date. Its casual but for this price range you can definitely find a cuter place for a first date. I felt like the owner/server kept staring at us when we were in deep conversation but that could be because the place was so empty. Service: Orders taken, drinks got refilled fast. Nothing special. Value: Reasonable.

Better than decent. Was in town visiting, and a friend took me here. She’s been coming for a decade; it’s her sushi«place.» We arrived around 8:30pm. There was only one occupied table. The temperature in the room was a bit hot; not sure if the air conditioning was out or if they were trying to conserve energy/save money. The sushi made up for it. We ordered nine rolls, including a Rainbow Roll, a Crazy Tuna Roll, a Volcano roll, an eel and cucumber roll, and a tuna roll. Our meal arrived on a boat. The presentation was one of the nicest boats I’ve seen a long while. On digging in, found the fish to be fresh, and the rolls a nice balance of rice and fish. The fish didn’t quite melt in my mouth, but it was better than average, for sure. The meal ended with a dish of cut pears in a sweet syrup(canned pears), which was a nice touch, albeit fresh fruit would have been more interesting. I was disappointed they didn’t have gluten-free soy sauce, but, as my colleagues tell me, that’ s a personal problem. I’d return, certainly.

I grew up in Elmwood, and never came here. For most of my life I refused to even try fish, now I eat fish with a vengeance. It’s only been about six months since I discovered a deep burning love for sushi and tuna. Even as I write I am craving sushi! Anyway… I went for lunch alone on a Monday, the place was pretty dead. I seat at the Sushi bar and ordered the Tekka Don tuna, which is sashimi on a bed of sushi rice. The tuna was good and fresh, not the greatest. The serving size was pretty big. The rice had a orange roe and sesame seeds mixed in, which I enjoyed. I think I would go back to try more of their sushi

I am avidly looking for a go-to sushi spot and was really hoping that Fuji would be just that… sadly not. I’ve returned… many times, each time hoping that I will be happier with my dinner but alas I never am. So I’ve given up on Fuji. Twice I’ve had salmon sashimi that was just a little… off., and their rolls leave me wanting something else… not what I’m accustom to. I’m feel bad writing a bad review, but you just don’t want to screw around with sushi. I too was surprised the first few times that I went to Fuji at the lack of cliental… but it might be for the same reasons I haven’t returned.

Surprisingly lovely and predictably always near empty. I’ve ate here a few times over a one year span and have been completly pleased at the quality of fish and thoughtfulness of preparation and dismayed at the lack of other customers while I am there. Each time I’ve sat at the sushi counter and the amiable though scruffy looking sushi chef and I’m presuming owner and husband of the only other employe at the restaurant has offered high quality fish. This place probably mostly makes maki, but the ingredients are excellent. This last time I sticked with nigiri along with a scallop special. The special was a live scallop with the main part thinly sliced and arrayed on one half of the shell topped with just a tad of tobiko and green onions. The other half of the shell had the other chewier parts in a spicy sauce. Simple and excellent. Everything else was top notch — the rice was just about rice — not packed too dense and not too light so it made it easily from the platter to my mouth. The tomago was served warm, the uni was creamy, the hamachi was buttery. Really — a surprise and I’m amazed no one on Unilocal has found this place and I hope this review spurs some of you to try it out. I’ve yet to order a maki but I’ve seen the guy put out the standard rolls and one indication of quality is that all the pieces are cleanly cut and of the same height. Oh — the prices are very reasonable. Uni is $ 3.50 and many nigiri pieces are just $ 2.
