His first trip to the new world(Spain to present day Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and back) covered over 8,000 miles and lasted seven and a half months. He ended up making four round-trips between Spain and the Americas between 1492 and 1503. This twelve foot tall granite statue of Columbus, holding a map and a sextant, was dedicated on October 12, 1984. The base is inscribed with the names and likenesses of his three ships –the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Marina. The statue is located on the front lawn of Waterbury City Hall.
