Café on the Green(most recently«Crossroads», but if you want to sound like either an insider or a local call it the ‘PO’, which is its undying other name and means you can have a meal AND do your post office business in one stop) reopened back in January under new management. If you haven’t tried it yet or recently, it is definitely worth a visit. It is a clean, well-lighted, unpretentious throwback of a place(soda fountain) buzzing during the school year with a mix of school kids in blazers from the nearby prep school, locals, tradespeople and visitors. In the summer you’ll find tennis players, families, college kids-turned-house painters, local regulars, ladies who lunch, etc. It now has A/C(yeah!), new tables outside with a view of the Green, wifi(also yeah) and SOCO ice cream at the soda fountain. Most important is the quality/price ratio of the breakfast and lunch: it’s good. They make the potato chips that come with any sandwich order(which I suspect means they lose money on fries once people have tried the chips included in the sandwich price) and the shakes are so thick they should look into getting straws with a higher tensile strength so they don’t collapse under the strain The breakfast sandwiches(an obsession of mine because it is hard to find a good one) are very good and my son(also a picky foodie and spoiled by a talented cook father) tells me that a few of the different sandwiches are also ‘legit’. Certainly haven’t tried everything on the menu but looking forward to hearing from others. Full disclosure: I am a proud Washington«townie» who has also taught at the nearby prep school for almost two decades and the school(my employer), that has owned the building for more than 50 years now has some role in this new remake of the Café. Check it out for yourself and you can decide if I am being objective!
