DAILYMARKETISNOWCLOSED: Just back from a 1.5 week vacation. Stopped by the Daily Market on my way to work for my usual egg, cheese, tomato, ketchup on whole wheat sandwich(they always remembered me and usually started to write it up as soon as they saw me without my saying anything) and large coffee(usually too hot and usually had to have them add ice cubes – I tend to drink my coffee lukewarm) with their great flavored coffee creamers – only to find out that they were closed! What a disappointment and what a loss! I did notice over the past year that they did not have the usual amount of help behind the counter making sandwiches and that the owners were often there instead. As far as their raising the prices, I have noticed it on two different occasions recently but compared to Au Bön Pain or Jack’s Deli, which are close by, their prices were still reasonable and much less. They will be missed and I wish them the best of luck in whatever new endeavor they undertake. Hopefully, we will see them in the Farragut Square neighborhood soon.

Conveniently located in Downtown DC, the Daily Market has become a regular fixture in my day. A locally-owned shop, they always make a variety of fresh foods(made daily), both ready-to-go and made to order. Some of my favorite ready-made items include ALL versions of their chicken salad and their empanadas. They’ve also crafted some masterful sandwiches for me, including their roast beef sub and a ham and cheese panini. They also have a smoothie bar, if you’re into liquid goodness. Furthermore, the Daily Market carries a decent selection of snacks and drinks that never fails to impress. Need a little something to keep you going during the day? This is the place! Also top-notch is the customer service. The Daily Market’s employees are always kind and a pleasure to be around. If you find yourself in Downtown DC(specifically the Golden Triangle area), give the Daily Market a try!

I used to really like this place and would go here almost daily to grab a bagel on the way to work. I stopped going as frequently when they raised their prices. I have gone a few times recently, and in the past few months, they have raised their prices again twice. The sad thing is that I think the price increases are affecting the employees, who are likely tipped in whatever change is left over from a purchase, more than customers themselves. It still just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that they are constantly raising prices, and I don’t think I’ll keep going here.

I was on the way to the Farragut North Metro after doing some business on K Street this afternoon and just popped in(this place is right next to the metro escalators). This place looked like it would be similar to Yes Organic Market(I live near the one in Cleveland Park and go there often for healthier convenience food on my way home from work). This is a mix between a convenience store and deli in a «kinda sorta not quite» way — my expectations were very low. They didn’t have a whole lot, and what they did have looked picked over, but the cashier was friendly(big plus for me) and the place looked clean and well-organized for a small space. What I stopped into Unilocal to write about is the Caribbean Crescent empanadas I wound up choosing right before the maddening frenzy of the evening metro commute. I chose one Spicy Beef and one Vegetable empanada from the deli case without much thought, and checked out with a roll of Haribo gummies. I’ve tried some of the empanada places in this part of town and have often felt«meh» about them. I didn’t expect much from these either. Who makes these Caribbean Crescent empanadas? They come closest to the empanadas I used to buy skipping class outside of my DODDS high school in Panama during the 90s, 50 cents from the cart that was parked outside the prison walls everyday that sold us kiddos 10-packs of cigarettes to boot(best empanadas ever, though, even if we joked about the mysterious fillings — they were savory!). How cool to bite into these and be pleasantly transported back to the warmy clime of my youth on a record cold day in DC. Crusty, flaky pastry shell(just right — not doughy and chewy, not crispy) and well-seasoned, even if these were not hot out of the oven(that speaks volumes to how great the dough and filling are). Love. As long as the Daily Market does business with this empanada dealer, I’m coming in to get my fix.

Why doesn’t this place have more reviews? Its such a convenient little store right off Farragut Square near the Dress Barn and CVS. I found it one day when I was searching Unilocal for a convenient place to get a yogurt smoothie near the office. I walked in and ordered a strawberry banana yogurt smoothie — it was awesome! At about $ 5, they use frozen fruits, yogurt, juice and honey. Healthy, yummy and hits the spot. The market also has a large selection of protein bars, some asian snacks like wasabi peas and choco pies, sushi and some salad boxes. There are also things like string cheese and individual size peanut butter packs. Great little market for the area.

I’ve been doing here for the last year and have been nothing more than full and happy. My usual is the egg and cheese on sourdough bread($ 2.59) + an organge san pelligrino($ 1.75). Always gets my day off to a great start. Recently I tried their fresh queezed juice which was amazing! All of my colleagues claim it’s their ‘secret lunch spot’. I’ve yet to try the lunch menu, but I’m looking forward to it.

I have grabbed an egg and cheese on English muffin or a plain cream cheese bagel almost every morning for the last 2 years on my way to work, mainly because the location is convenient to my work and decent prices. Today I asked for bagel with plain cream cheese. She smeared the cream cheese on so thin you could see only bread. I think I know why now, it was expired cream cheese!!! Extremely sour and I now feel ill. What a major disappointment, I will not be going back.

The fresh squeeze juices are great. The friendly clerks accommodate me by adding extra ingredients I bring, so I get a tailor-made green juice with their celery, broccoli, cucumber, and ginger blended with apple, pear, and watermelon radish I add to the mix. It is delicious and so healthy! I feel 69 years young after drinking this love potion.

Great place for quick sandwich near Farragut Square. Lots, and lots, and lots of choices. Relatively inexpensive for just a sandwich but of course it adds up when you get chips and a soda. Vegetarian choices, too. A huge selection of smoothies. The yogurt and berries is particularly good. The staff is friendly and efficient.

Trust, I’ve tried to like this place. Unconventional & off the beaten path. Don’t kid yourself that this is some mom & pop shop going head to head with the Pret A Manger type corporate food bank. I’m with the previous reviewer feeling that you’ll get«nickle & dimed.» I took my waffle, singular not plural($ 4.89), strawberries in a small plastic ramican, think small ketchup bowl with a 12oz Sanpellegrino sodas to the register to the tune of $ 9.25. HUH? WHAT?! I know, that’s what I said. Apparently the 15 or so diced strawberries is a $ 2.00 accessory? I expect that at Wicked Waffle, but at mom & pop shop that still sells bananas for $ 0.74? I’m not saying go here, just don’t expect to get a value when you come here.

I left here feeling nickel and dimed. The price of the make your own yogurt parfait bar is already expensive to begin with — 12oz for $ 4.99 — but after a rough commute in that morning I decided I’d treat myself. I make my parfait, adding in the extra toppings they have, filling it to the top. This being a once in a blue moon treat for me, I want to make sure I got the most for my money. The guy at the register watches me silently. When I reach the register, he jokes around with me saying«Wow, good job. You should take a picture, post it on facebook, saying ‘job well done’» He rings me up, the total coming to $ 6.04. I ask«this is $ 4.99, right?» He says«Yes». So I hand over my card, asking for a copy of the receipt so that I can inspect without holding up the line. Tax in DC is high, but 10% of $ 4.99 should not equal $ 1.05 worth of tax. Well the receipt is just a credit card receipt, it doesn’t disclose the detail. So I finally just ask«How did it add up to $ 6.04, if it’s only $ 4.99?» He says, «$ 4.99 is just to fill the cup, putting the lid on. Anything extra we charge $.50.» I say«Ok, well you guys should have a sign up» and leave feeling like he watched me the entire time, thought I was taking too much of a portion and then tried to sneak in some random fee, thinking like most I would not question it. It wouldn’t have been so bad if he would’ve told me when I asked him the price, but that deceptiveness turned me off from wanting to support this mom and pop(store) again.

This little shop is an all-around great place for most everything you could possibly need on the go to and from work. They have a great selection of snacks, from pretzels and hummus to fruit and yogurt, breakfast sandwiches, and awesome smoothies, which have fresh ingredients and a good consistency. Not to mention it’s conveniently located next to the park. Stop by if you forgot your lunch, or if you just need a quick treat.

This shop/café was underneath a temporary office I was working out of near Farragut. On a search for a morning bagel, I stopped here twice. They have a sandwich/breakfast counter in the back offering typical breakfast staples. The bagel itself was subpar, not very big, and smushed together, although the cream cheese was tasty. The sausage, egg and cheese on an English muffin was tasty, but not excellent. The sausage was flavorless but the oozy cheese was great. This would great for a hangover. Prices aren’t too high for downtown, service was quick as they had 3 friendly women behind the counter preparing all of the orders. They seemed to have quite a selection of food for lunch as well, as well as plenty of premade goods for purchase. I was intrigued by the bulgogi cheesesteak, and was regretful that the allure of the nearby Farragut food truck congregation lured me away during lunch.

In the Farragut square area, there are lots of random options for lunch, but resting on a final decision always seems to be my biggest trouble. Since The Daily Market is a little further from my office than other similar places, I hadn’t gone in until last week. And I was really impressed. They have a huge menu. It is a bit overwhelming, and the order of it does not make the most sense, but either way, there is bound to be something for you. You pick your sandwich, your bread and Bam! you are ready. I had some sort of delicious vegetarian sandwich that had fresh mozzarela, marinated vegetables and pesto. It was very good, but I am excited to mix it up next time! Sandwiches are in the neighborhood of $ 5. They also have tons of other convenience store basics and an assortment of Asian food. On a sunny afternoon, go to The Daily Market, grab a sandwich and soda and head to Farragut Square to bask in the sunshine.

On Thursday March 10th2011 I bought a tuna fish salad from here which I got food poisoning from. I am on my 4th day of being severly ill and have had to take time off from work. That is all I can say and I just want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Kind of the sort of randomly awesome assortment you’d find on the street corners of NYC. Except, of course, because this is DC the place is significantly cleaner and doesn’t reek of spoiled milk and Clorox. I am a fan of the empanadas, but largely because I’m a fan of being filled up for less than three bucks. I tried the shrimp summer rolls today. They looked huge and appetizing but a bit disappointed with the degree of rice vermicelli to anything else. They sort of tasted like a mouthful of… rice vermicelli.

This place rocks. They have tons to choose from and the quality is superior to most similar joints in the ‘hood. Their breakfast sandwiches rock. I’ll admit there have been a few times I’ve been a wee bit hungover going into work and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich from the Daily Market always hits the spot. They have the best Shrimp Summer Rolls(and peanut sauce to go with it) in the area. And it is super cheap. For some time now, I have a small obsession with spring summer rice paper rolls. My top one is at Teasim in Chinatown, but this is up there as well. They have all those delicious(albeit high in sodium and carbs) asian rice snacks in at least 6 different flavors. OMG — they are so delish! And like all other posters said, the staff is always friendly. Breakfast, lunch or snacktime –this place is a downtown gem!

This is a great lunchtime place. They have soup, sushi, garden rolls, salads, tons of candy, everything. They need more of these types of places downtown — it’s a nice break from Pubeway and the SizzEx. Everything here is reasonably priced, too. I usually get some garden rolls, an orange, some salt and vinegar chips(don’t judge) and a soda, and it’s less than $ 10. Also, one time I was accosted by an older gentleman who claimed to be the«A/V king of Washington, D.C.» and that he would make me a star. It’s nice to hear something like that on an ass-dragging Monday when you would rather die than go back to work. Even if he was completely insane and creepy.

This place is very handy to have around the neighborhood. It resembles at least a dozen other similar places around downtown DC: they make sandwiches, they sell soup, they sell bagels and baked goods, they sell little containers of pre-made salads, they sell juice and soda and tea of all sorts, they sell sushi, they sell snack food, they sell energy bars, they make smoothies… the list goes on. Basically, if you are at work and need a snack, dessert, or lunch but don’t know what you want, odds are you can find something to suit you here. Oh, and they sell lotto tickets if you’re into that.

This is my default lunch place whenever I don’t pack my own. The BLT is wonderful! It’ got that perfect balance of mayo, lettuce, tomato and onion. The sandwich comes out perfect everytime, and I always go back to it whenever I venture into new lunch options there. Careful! The coffee lids always seem to leak on me. I don’t know why I always have that problem there. But, there’s nothing worse than starting your day with a big dripped brown stain on the front of your shirt. They also have a wonderful selection of international snack options. Go on in, take a wander!
