Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

Great programs but cannot see a thing from the upper level beyond the front row.

Sixth & I is such a cool concert venue! I attended a jazz concert by Grammy-​nominated Cécile McLorin Salvant, and I was impressed by the acoustics, the beautiful dome and stained glass, and the history of the place.

This place is beautiful. I’m delighted that I had a chance to take a free tour with Chaplain Michael. It’s a great deed (mitzvah) that 3 men chose to save this building.

Came here for a Chuck Palahniuk reading — it was a lively event in a beautiful synagogue. The fact that Sixth & I allowed an author to throw candy, stuffed animals, beach balls, and fake arms in a holy place is pretty accepting and open-​minded. I give them props for being such a hoppin’, happenin’ place. I highly recommend going to events here, it’s absolutely gorgeous, and you’re sure to have a good time.

Never encountered a place like this. Home for Jewish life and services of all types. Beautiful venue and amazing programs run by dedicated people keeping a young vibrant Jewish community in DC thriving.

What a beautiful, unique venue! They have a ton of awesome talks and events — definitely get on their newsletter mailing list to see what’s coming up. I saw Elizabeth Warren speak here last spring. I’d recommend getting there early, especially for popular speakers/​events; we got there 20 minutes or so before the talk started, and the only available seats were on the second floor, with the stage view semi-​obstructed by the balcony/​poles.

This synagogue offers a different service each Friday of the month meaning that the first Friday is always the same service, etc. This means there is not just one rabbi so you really have to go and get a feel and decide for yourself.
They welcomed us into the community and I felt comfortable almost immediately. The regulars are very friendly and knowledgable and can help connect you with all sorts of Jew stuff if you’re looking to get involved.
I recommend getting there for happy hour and staying/​paying for dinner because that’s when you will really meet people of course!

I really enjoyed attending a talk at the Sixth and I synagogue! Yes, it was formerly a synagogue, also formerly a church, and almost a nightclub… But now it remains a non-​denominational event space for religious and non-​religious events.
The space is quite large and great for listening to speakers (especially in the front row!). It also holds many other events, including music concerts, book discussions, and even whiskey tastings! Check out their calendar (
) for more events. Some fill up pretty quickly, so buy your tickets in advance!

A long time ago, back when I was cool I used to intern at the 9:30 Club. This experience let me experience tons of new and established acts in an intimate venue with great acoustics.
Sixth and I has a similar feel only with a few differences like for one, It’s a synagogue and two they have chairs! The venue is large and fits over 800 people but the upper level, pew style seating makes it feel small and comfy. There isn’t really a bad seat in the house unless you happen to be sitting behind someone with big hair or offensive body odor.
Programming is eclectic with musicians like indie rock darlings Deerhunter, ukelele maestro Jake Shimabukuro to authors like Michael Pollan, Khaled Hosseini and comedians like Tina Fey and Amy Sedaris. They do trivia nights and seder dinners as well!
At the beginning of every show they open up their basement bar so you can grab a drink before the show. It is nothing like 9:30 Club’s famous back bar but it’s a casual and classy place to get your drink on – just be sure to have a cover on your drink you wouldn’t want to spill anything on this beautiful and historic synagogue.
I highly recommend signing up for their mailing list to check out the different programs they have lined up next. There is definitely something for everybody here.
