I have used them for years. Even though it means going a block out of my way and crossing busy Pennsylvania Avenue at the intersection of 7th Street, where motorists think it’s fair game to attempt to run over pedestrians. They’ve done tailoring. They’ve done laundry. They’ve done dry cleaning, always to my total satisfaction. And I have NEVER had a shirt come back missing buttons or having shattered buttons, which is the reason I quit using my last laundry service.

I have lived in various parts of DC, and I am just as lazy as the next person. So, I have tried nearly a dozen dry cleaners(one or two local ones each time I moved), and now I make the trip to Penn Cleaners because I have never found a place that does the work that they do. While I have never taken women’s clothes there(hey, I am a single guy), every task(alterations, wash and press, dry cleaning), for all kinds of clothing(suits, dress shirts, military uniforms) has been performed well, relatively quickly and at a reasonable price(hey, it is DC, things are expensive). Military types: They know what they are doing! By the way, a little cultural sensitivity goes a long way.

I’d like to give them 2.5 stars, but alas, that’s not an option. Prompt service. The staff is attentive and courteous although their dry-cleaner once missed a giant coffee stain on my pantleg(most dry cleaners are retail fronts that outsource to larger cleaning facilities). Without objection, the stain was removed at no additional cost. My complaint comes from the fact that few cleaners in DC attempt to remove sweat stains common on men’s dress shirts. Cost is reasonable.

My dry cleaning experiences in DC have run from expensive-and-disastrous to just expensive, but I really like Penn Cleaners. They’ve done a great job on my dry cleaning, nothing has come back damaged(compared to other experiences, this is a plus!), and they’ve successfully tackled a few challenging alterations requests. There’s no such thing as cheap dry cleaning in DC, but currently, Penn offers a discount if you bring in more than 5 pieces at a time. This is a business that is interested in its customers — more power to them!

After going to two other stores that claimed they did alterations, the fine people at Penn Cleaners accepted my challenge. I bought a shirt that was a men’s medium and needed it tailored to fit me. That meant taking in the sides as well as moving up the sleeves. She was unsure about the job at first but then agreed and went on to pin the shirt how I wanted it in their small«dressing room». The price was high(but I was able to negotiate $ 5 off) and the wait time was a week. The cost of tailoring was more than the cost of the shirt — so I only suggest doing this if you are really determined to get what you want. I got my shirt back the other day and it’s exactly what I wanted! If I have have any other crazy ideas of how I want to transform my clothes I’m definitely coming here.
