Best DC Vegan Brunch!!! Dinner is also amazing. Everything I’ve tried at Nu Vegan is great and I’ve had good customer service every time I’ve stopped by. Love it.

The food was super-fantastic. I had a crab cake wrap with a side of the collard greens and candied yams. I will be coming back.

The bomb dot com!!! I finally made it here after tasting the Mac and cheese that my friend gave me a few months back. The staff was very friendly; offering samples and even patient with my mother and I as this was our first time. They offer a plethora of options hot and cold. What we tried: Chocolate chip cookie– AMAZING… I’m going to buy 5 next time. I’d buy these over store brand any day. Cornbread-AMAZING… Need 2 pieces, one for the road and one for the next day. String beans-Delicious and very flavorful Mac and cheese-AMAZING and its VEGAN though! Taco salad– AMAZING, the presentation of this salad was beautiful and had me doing my happy dance. The establishment was clean and really laid back and comfy. Can’t wait to come back. This place is going to take all of my hard earned money lol.

Chick’n Dummies + Broccoli and Cauliflower Lasagna + Curry Tofu Fried Steak + Sweet Potatoes Black beans and Rice + Greens Fries Among all that my party ordered(I tried those listed above), My favorite was probably the Chick’n Drummies with buffalo sauce. They use a little piece of bamboo to wrap vegan chicken around in the shape of a drumstick. The steak is not particularly good, stick to the chicken and lasagna. I brought some meat lovers with me and they had a good time. The food here is flavorful and unique. The service is friendly and the menu is large enough and diverse enough to provide a fun time for a large party. I had two people with me that are Taoist, which means they don’t eat garlic or onions. This restaurant is not well suited for them. They use garlic and onions in most everything, which usually is a good thing.

I am confused with why this restaurant keeps changing its name — from Everlasting Life to Woodland Bistro and now NuVegan… The place’s name might be changed, but the food has not. One main and two sides is $ 11 + tax, which is not bad at DC at all. I had the vegan drum stick and that was good, I chose the broccoli and spinach salad as my sides. What gives this place a 3 stars only is the spinach, it is tired and bruised and soaked in its salad dressing for way too long… My buddy has the BBQ Pork Ribs, it is good and can fool plenty of people. The fresh carrot juice for me is a bit on the high side, over $ 7 for one carrot juice, you can get it in other place for half or 2⁄3 of the price! Still a good vegan spot in the Petworth Parkview neighborhood.

Love, love this vegan Paradise. I came across this diamind while in route to Ikea. I glanced to my left, the words NuVegan stole my attention. I was so interested in learning more about this new Edition to the UMD area that I vowed to check it out when I finished my shopping. After spending hours shopping, I decided to head towards NuVegan. When I arrived doors were closing. What a fudgin disappointment. I was starvin like Marvin. So I vowed to come back earlier the next day. The next day I walk into the doors of a vegans heaven. I approached what reminded me of a service line. There were a large variety of food choices. I was flustered from wanting everything! The list consisted of Fried Chicken drum sticks, curry chicken, lasagna, mac and cheese, and soo much more. I got the the fried chicken, mac and cheese, greens, cornbread, and rice. All I can say is I experience an oralgasm. Yes, a mouth orgasm! Lol, my taste buds experienced mouthwatering pleasure at its finest! My Boyfriend was delighted. All I can say is this is my favorite vegan spot in the DMV so far. But I’m a Unilocaler so I am on a hunt!!!

Meh. I think this place gets so much traffic because there are so few vegan restaurants in DC, and none in this neighborhood. The set up of the ordering-paying-pick up process is inefficient and there are frequenrly traffic jams throughout the space. The food is okay. Exodus had more flavorful options in my opinion. The staff is terrible. Super unprofessional and always looking like they have some place better to be. The service is incredibly slow and inefficient, with orders going unmade. If it weren’t for the chicken drummies and taco salad and wouldn’t come back. Sigh.

Early 2012. I was single and hot in these streets… and also carless(if you thought that said careless, don’t worry cause I was that too). I would take long walks between Georgia Ave and Adams Morgan(when in Rome.) with no apparent motive but to explore(I was so random smh). On this particular exploration, an interested guy, now distant friend, asked if he could buy me a vegan dinner. Listen, I like meat, and although I’m gluten free now, I also like flour. So it didn’t make sense to me that he would invite me to a vegan restaurant. He, with no car(«cause he lived in the city»), invited me to walk to Everlasting Life(as it was previously called) from HU… yea. Understand though, it’s only about half a mile, if that. Me, «Where is this place again? Do you know? Why are we still walking? I didn’t plan on sweating…» Him, «You don’t walk in Cali?» I just looked at him. Me, «Do I need a taxi?» I mean, I got cute for this little fake date. He laughed, but I was serious though. We finally arrived, and know that NuVegan is not the same Everlasting Life it used to be, ok. I looked at him and just smiled(guys if you’re reading this, you have now found out one of the reasons you were zoned into friendship). …it was a hole in the wall, almost shack-like(no lie), but the smell of good food hit me like a bat. Collards, sweet potatoes, vegan cornbread, chocolate chip cookies… and the Mac and cheese! Wow! I honestly didn’t expect to like it. I mean, I like meat(apparently I like vegan too tho)! My recent experiences with Nu’Vegan include me meeting friends and study dates. They’ve expanded the seating area and wifi’d the place. I really like that Nu’Vegan has a raw bar and a juice/smoothie bar. There’s even a stage for performances and while they may be a bit pricey, they offer a rewards system(which it’s isn’t very sophisticated just yet, but ya know). My recommendation, go now. Go hungry. Bring a laptop and DON’T use this location as a date night, go for brunch or lunch. You’re welcome.

Talk about a dream come true. Most people, even those deep in the vegan world, can say soul food and vegan food often don’t end up in the same sentence, let alone in our mouths. This place was the chillest, most delicious and most affordable place I have been to yet! The food was delicious(you HAVETO get the mac and cheese — will blow your mind). There is a balance of traditional soul food, i.e. collard greens, bbq«ribs» and«chicken dummies.» The atmosphere is super chill and the people and even chiller. There is a lot of space to sit– you can definitely bring a group here. There are so many options — I got very overwhelmed, but that just means that you need to be here every day to cover it all!

While I could never be a full time vegetarian and would never even attempt to be vegan, I do at least once a year spend a month living a no meat, no fish lifestyle which can be very hard. Most restaurants cater to the meat eaters of the world and 11 months out of the year I’m all for it but I’m glad places like this exist for my one month dalliance with the other side. While the place doesn’t look like much when walking pass, the inside is very nice, the big glass front allows for a lot of natural light and the dining area is set up for casual dining while enjoying food and drinks. The food is served cafeteria style with all ordering in the back, they have a glass class with prepared that I believe is rotated often if not daily, they also have a menu with a variety of hot fresh to made items. I’ve been for both breakfast and lunch and was happy with my items on both occasions. Began with the breakfast burrito, nice size, nice filing, I believe they use a soy base and some fresh vegetables. For lunch I had the«fish» sandwich, of course the fish is soy but it was fried nice and had a well seasoned breading, sandwich is topped with fresh veggies and a nice sauce for added flavor. NuVegan is an excellent choice for the full time vegan and vegetarian and also will be heavy in the rotation for this meat lover once I go back to my beloved lifestyle.

Amazing selection of vegan salads everyday, they are always fresh. The ingredients are never boring, it is a pleasure to sample through them but you should mention it. The hot dishes are usually not my favourite compared to the salads but they are a good replacement of traditional meat recipes. I always get the meatloaf when they have it, it is made of tofu and it really tastes amazing. Another thing you should remember is to get a bun, it is very tasty and has a slight fruity flavour that makes me finish each time. One of my favourite smoothies is the one with tahini and spirulina, a very surprising taste that will leave a nice after taste in your mouth.

to the drumsticks and Mac n cheese. For the record, everything looked amazing. I would have eaten it all if I could have. The price point is also very reasonable and there is plenty of seating. My only gripe is the area where you order the food. It’s a very confusing system with no real line structure and apparently 3 different lines but to me it just looked like a cloud of people just standing around. I’m still kicking myself for not grabbing a slice of red velvet cake. Next time, DC. Next time.

Just an all around epic vegan spot. Even if you have good vegan eating near where you live you should check out this place. The food is served buffet style, I hate to say it but think«vegan Boston market». Only negative mark was the service was a little spotty, they lost my order in the kitchen — staff was very nice about it so no big deal. Everything was good. Mac and cheese was very creamy and unlike most Mac and cheese I’ve had. Coffee was very good. Omelette came out piping hot and was so friggin good. The gospel music was fitting cause the food was a near religious experience. I’ve used the word«good«four times in this review. Get off your butt and go here.

Don’t let the word«Vegan» deter you if you’re a meat eater. I grew up in Texas, and BBQ has a special place in my heart and stomach. However, this place has something to satisfy all tastes. Here’s my list of pros/likes: — heaping portions… You get what you pay for and can often make two meals out of one. — Rotating main course servings ready to serve. — Delicious flavors in most food items. — They serve a lot of «meat» dishes that fool the senses… They’re actually vegan! — Kind and helpful employees. — Rewards program for frequent customers. — Newly repainted and renamed gives a trendy atmosphere that isn’t standoffish or snooty(some people stereotype vegan this way) — The Garvy Burger is out of this world. I don’t have any cons really. I personally have no taste for their shakes. That’s about it. I definitely recommend you stop by and try some vegan food!

NuVegan Café is located on Georgia Avenue near Howard University. The restaurant’s ambiance is trendy and the restaurant is very clean. Some of the menu items change daily, however there are many selections of food and desserts to choose from. The food is very tasty and well prepared. The deserts are awesome too. I prefer to order my food to go because you’ll usually receive heartier portions than dinning at the restaurant. I enjoyed drinking the free alkaline water, however the restaurant should replace the plastic cups with glass which would enhance the taste of the water. Lastly, the price of the food is a bit pricey but I enjoy eating vegan meals. This is nice restaurant with good food… enjoy! Recently, the owner of NuVegan Café posted a complimentary response to my review of his establishment. The owner inquired as to which foods I’ve experienced at the café. I’ve experienced the following food selections from your wonderful café which are as follows: 1. Lasagna 2. Sheppard’s Pie 3. BBQ 4. Macaroni & Cheese 5. Yams 6. Quinoa 7. Couscous 8. Corn Bread Dressing 9. Red Velvet Cake 10. Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Cookies 11. Cinnamon Roll I enjoy all of these dishes!

Today was my first time dining here. I am vegan and finding«traditional» items like pancakes, waffles, french toast and«vegan» sausage is challenging. So just knowing that this place exist made me excited! I traveled around 45 minutes from my house just to try the food. I had their Sunday brunch. The pancakes and breakfast potatoes were great! The waffles were pretty decent too. The sausage patties were just okay, but not something I’d try again. The grits were lumpier than I’d hope, but they tasted average. Despite ordering the french toast, I didn’t eat it because it was cold which made it unappealing. Honestly, nearly all the hot items were on the cooler side, which was a bit disappointing. Still, I enjoyed most of what I ordered. Overall, I think I will try this place again. But if I am going for bruch, I will show up as soon as they open so I can get my food while it’s still hot and fresh. :-)

I want to first say that the concept of this place is amazing. Not only do you are greeted by the owner who explains how the process works, she’s very involved in what you like or dislike. Everything is made fresh and I love the way that you order and then pay and sit down. It is like a fool proof method. If you l opt to sit you save money on your order. The food is amazing and with three samples of each side of the bar you are bound to find what you like. I love the kale it is amazing. That is what I’m addicted to. The smoothies are heaven and the atmosphere is very laid back urban chic. I do not feel out of place and it’s right by Howard which explains the crowd that it mostly attract; which is nothing short of a great conversation and catching up with friends that you run into. Over all the prices are just and don’t forget to try the kale and the lasagna.

After few long days of Thanksgiving leftovers, my sister and I didn’t think we could possibly maintain our holiday norm of eating like gluttonous beasts. So the Saturday following Thanksgiving, we ventured out, went on a long run and visited a friend. We were feeling pretty good about ourselves, beginning to re-establish a rhythm of normalcy, until said friend suggested that we check out the vegan restaurant across the street. My sis, a vegan for over 10 years couldn’t help herself and asked if we could drop by and just see what their menu was like.(You know, for future reference.) But once we walked in to the cafeteria style dining area and caught scent of the kitchen, my sister’s eyes looked like that of a kid in a candy store. So, as the good sister that I am I agreed to power through a plate with her.(You know, because she was heading back out of town the next day.) We ordered a number of things to split including a breakfast burrito, mac & cheese, ginger spiced tofu and cornbread.(You know, just a proper, well-balanced meal of carbs.) As the non-vegan at the table, I happen to like most vegan foods but I also remember clearly what the non-vegan version to these dishes often taste like. That being said I often catch myself thinking things like«This is good *vegan* mac and cheese» instead of «This is good mac and cheese.» However at Woodland’s, everything I tasted was just delicious, without any need to place an emphasis on the vegan distinction. Vegan or not, most people will really enjoy the flavors, textures and consistency they experience throughout most of the entrees and sides. And like many vegan meals, although we left full, we didn’t leave feeling heavy and sluggish. In fact, we went right back out for a tour de foot of the National Mall. Vegan or not, the food here is undeniably scrumptious.

This place is essentially fake meat substitutes for real meat/cheese dishes. Personally, I prefer vegan/vegetarian restaurants that rely on vegetables but there is certainly a place in the vegan world for this type of establishment when you have a yen for something you might’ve eaten in a more meaty lifetime. I feel as though I sampled the wrong dishes and am willing to go back again to see what the rave reviews are about. I did enjoy the Curried tofu. I didn’t care for the mac n ‘cheese’ but I’m vegetarian not vegan and am weird about fake cheese… I could see why vegans like it, however. The only thing of note is that I would definitely avoid anything made with their tomato sauce(i.e. eggplant parmesan) but this is also coming from someone who grew up in an italian new york household so I feel like for here, it’s best to stick to their namesake, the vegan soul food, which is what they’re known for. Next time I’m going to opt for some other dishes and hoping to have a more positive review. I have no complaints, i just think I need to try some other dishes because there has to be a reason people are so stoked about this spot and I always want to support anyone/place that’s into promoting an animal friendly world.

The food is here amazing. My only reason for the three star review is because the service is slow and staff isn’t very friendly. You wait in a cafeteria-style line to order your food(which is right in front of you so you’d assume they’d dish it out right there), then you wait in another line to pay, then you wait forever at a table with a number for your food to arrive cold. The menu is also confusing as they have combos with entrees plus one or two or three sides, yet charge you repeatedly when you get to the registered. Whatever.

Located near Howard/Shaw in a dumpy neighborhood, this restaurant is kind of like a cafeteria where you go through a line to get what you want, then stop by a register to pay, then sit down in the large dining area. It’s not a place you go to for ambiance or to take a special date. Eh, soul food vegan is not that good. It’s basically just normal dishes with tofu substituted for meat. There are a few salads. The flavors were mostly bland and not exciting. However, I would consider coming back so I’m boosting it a star. I would come back just for ease of getting healthy salad-like foods. But I would probably prefer to visit one of the salad chain restaurants in DC first. The fresh juices are the best thing you can get here but take forever to come out because they are fresh made. When you have to sit in a not-so-nice place waiting for your juice, it’s kind of not-so-fun.

This place is miraculous. Best vegan food in DC, easily. The best buffalo«chicken» wings are my favorite dish, but the garlic kale is a close second. We ordered the baked ziti, carrot soufflé, Mac ‘n’ cheese, buffalo wings, country fried steak, pancakes, link sausage, breakfast scramble, biscuit, blueberry biscuit, sunrise smoothie, piña colada smoothie, lemon cake, cinnamon roll, and blueberry cheesecake. Everything was delicious! I recommend preferring everything. My perfect meal would be buffalo wings, Mac ‘n’ cheez, garlic kale, lemon cake, and coffee. This place makes a meat lover like me willing to consider giving up the meat. For real.

This is a perfect don’t judge the book by its cover restaurant. It’s a hard to figure out how to order, and the kitchen line is way in the back. But the food — that’s why you’re here. It’s vegan masterpiece. The flavors were amazing. We had the chicken drummies, the curried tofu salad, collards and broccoli. My daughter had the raw veggie wrap. All were fantastic. We finished it off with an apple crumb cake that was perfectly put together. The portions are huge. Come hungry and enjoy!

It’s a must that I update my previous review…& how about that, a year & few days later. So for our Sunday brunch before one of the grown babies left home, I was able to sway the two meat eaters to be open minded & to get out of their carnivore zone in trying something new… more importantly, «cuz Mama said so»! After I gave the newbies(our guest has partaken in this Vegan Fare previously) a thorough run down on the food, both the hot & cold sections, the ordering/choosing process, the drinks selection, & the tantalizing dessert zone, we were good to go. The«3 Samples» rule was a big plus as well. My daughter’s eyes were popping out of her head as she was in foodie la-la land. After what seemed like a 10 minute back & forth with the one of the line servers(thanks G for being a trooper), she decided upon the Baked Rigatoni. In addition to the few sample bites I had of hers, I also took a small container home. She also got the Brown Rice & Beans. Yes, I sampled that too & it had a nice little Cajun kick to it — don’t judge me on my sampling needs! Due to her hearing my constant roar of their slammin’ Mac & Cheese, she got that too. She then sealed her plate off with some greenery & tried the Red Wine Kale. She was so impressed with how the tantalizing cuisine was vegan… yes that’s the verbiage she used. 1 down, 1 to go. My son was extremely hesitant; especially as a professional athlete who eats constantly nonstop & almost the same intake of lean protein, pasta & massive carbs 4 – 7 times a day. Yet, he was a team player just for trying. I had my fingers crossed as he was very hungry & this would be the make it or break it for my future recommendations of WVB upon his next visits. Grand-Slam! Oops, I should say TD, as he enjoyed his massive To Go portion of Baked Rigatoni, «Ma this sauce is pretty good like yours»…excuse him, everything about Mama’s cooking is GREAT. I was so happy to see him go outside the box of his normal trajectory of food & have a new appreciation for the Veganism effort. He too settled for the Mac & Cheese & side of roasted potatoes. He sealed his experience with their gigantic Cinnamon Roll & demolished it. «Ma, do you think they have Almond Milk?»…“But of course Son”…“Cool, next time, that will be my joint with that roll”…Whatever you want Son”. Yippee, he said next time! Happy grown babies makes a happy Ma/Mommy, especially when it comes to their nutrition. Our guest who was no stranger WVB went the veggie route, as she selected the Mac & Cheese(proof is in the cheese that this is the go to item), steamed Broccoli, Red Wine Kale & Brown Rice. She also got the Tropical Twist, a fresh juice made out of Apples, Carrots, Ginger & Pineapple. I actually gave her a sliver of my selection that she sang about while she nibbled… see how I give back from sampling so much… sharing is caring. & for me, I finally tried something new aside from my usual 3 fav picks, & went with the Fried Chicken Sandwich. It usually comes with BBQ Sauce. Yet I called an audible & asked that they toss the yummy tasting, double breaded, crispy bean curd fillet in Buffalo Sauce. In The Heavy’s song«How You Like Me Now» stance, I was singing to myself while I was stuffing my face! & yes, I too got the Mac & Cheese along with some potato salad. For my beverage of choice; I sipped on the Royal Ginger Root — Lemon Ginger Echinacea. & we all consumed many glasses of their fresh & clear Alkaline Water. Side vegan nugget, they offer Sunday Brunch from 10am — 3pm & if you come in a few minutes after, you have a good chance of lucking up on some of the brunch items. My daughter had to bump me out of the way as I was really contemplating taking a Breakfast Sandwich made out of Sausage Patty & Cheese home for later… I opted not to be too greedy in one setting. Always a blessing to break bread with your family especially over the holidays. More so at a place that offers a green/healthy way of eating, where everyone is satisfied, & some overly satisfied. Us gals are already planning to come back next Sunday for the brunch. If we don’t make it & come for dinner instead, I am preparing myself to expand my taste buds & indulge in the endless options I have yet to conquer. Meat Lovers… NUMB/ENCORE, what the heck are you waiting for?!

Recently drove into DC from Gaithersburg just to visit Woodlands for my birthday dinner after seeing all the good reviews! I was so excited and my excitement was justified! This place is awesome! The inside décor is very ‘soul food:’ it’s casual and open with tabled seating. To order food you walk to the very back towards the kitchen and in the main area there is the smoothie/shake bar. They have a huge menu, I wanted to try everything on it. A wide variety of salads, side dishes and entrees. Their prices are very good for the amount of food you get! I’m happy to see a vegan place with large portions(not wimpy ones). I tried the fried ‘chicken’ sandwich, cornbread, mac and cheese, green beans, and 3 ‘chicken drummies’(I was determined to get a bite of everything on my birthday!). I also tried a chocolate shake and my friend tried the strawberry one. All the food was amazing! The mac and cheese is incredible and I love how the drummies have a wooden stick in them acting as a bone, I thought that was really cool. I can see why this place is so popular and I wish I lived closer! My only issue was that the music was very loud it was a little hard to carry on conversation with my friend. Also one of the employees who took my food order was hard to hear as he explained the menu to me, he mumbled a lot. Other than that I think the food here is so good it’s worth a trip!

A wide spectrum of customers, ranging from my midwestern friend who still thinks chicken fingers are fit for the gods, to Yeezus himself( ) have dined here. So I figure this place must be the cat’s meow, right? Meh. Not so much. The mac and cheese is the crowdpleaser, and both times I’ve come — a Sunday evening and a week day evening — they’ve been out! What the heck, guys. They do have other tasty options(their hot plate special of the day is usually good, and their BBQ wings are yummy). But I still think this place clocks in at a solid three stars — A-OK. The queuing situation is a mess. To pick up your food, you form a line into a small room(probably a 6×8 space) that quickly drags out into the main dining area and backs to the cash register, creating confusion between folks who are placing their order vs. paying for their food. This situation is exacerbated by the slow service provided by the folks serving food and checking customers out. The restaurant itself feels like a giant dining hall, yet it is oddly empty. Maybe everyone is getting their food to go? While I like the idea of this restaurant, and I feel pretty cool for having shared one life experience with Kanye West, I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way to try.

Food was great. We had lasagna, curried chick peas, red curry tofu, mac and cheese, potato salad, and this amazing ginger collard salad. We were totally confused as to how to order food. Apparently all orders are placed in the back is what looks like the kitchen. The food that’s available on the bar — 2 hot entrees and 4 hot sides and then the dozens of cold sides and desserts — you get right away. Orders, like chicken drumsticks, tacos, or chicken sanwiches, you get a ticket and a number. Then you take your ticket back toward the dining room and pay at the register to pay where you can get drinks, smoothiea, and nut milkshakes. The meal was huge, we had a bunch to take home and it was VERY reasonably priced. We asked if they could deliver to south Florida…

Vegan soul food We walked in and were instantly confused about how to order and where to go. We got in line in the back of the restaurant and were overwhelmed by the choices. One person behind us was annoyed and cut in front of us. The servers behind the counter were borderline rude. We didn’t know they were closing in 30 min, as the the place was packed with people. One of the girls that was dishing up our food actually laughed at us. Extremely uncomfortable and harsh . The lady at the checkout counter was sweet and helpful . The food was good . The cheesecake was my favorite . Liked the idea –not the experience

I don’t know about this place. Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff. I just wasn’t that impressed and I am actually surprised at all the glowing reviews. I am not a vegan or vegetarian, so perhaps it is because my perspective is that of a person who WILL eat chicken fingers and cheese, so I don’t need an special restaurant to serve me faux versions of the foods I want to eat. But clearly they are doing something right, the place was packed and it is pretty impressive to see the array of options they offer daily. I suppose if I was in fact a veg. I would have a deeper appreciation for the variety of dishes they make available. I did the buffet and it was Sunday breakfast, so perhaps there is a better way to do this place. I would come here again to try some other stuff but I wouldn’t go out of my way. I did enjoy my juice, when I finally got it, after I finished eating and then waited another 10 minutes while the poor girl at the counter made smoothies/juices and rang up orders.

I was a vegetarian for 3 years and a vegan for 1 — obviously, these chapters of my life are all but a distant memory and much has changed since then(love the pig AHAHAHA). However, I feel that there could have been a great possibility in me continuing that life choice if Woodlands had existed back then: P This 100% vegan bistro offers a ‘Hot Bar’ with entrees(such as Vegan Chicken Curry, Vegan Lasagna, Vegan Barbecue Roast, etc.), sides(hot and cold, such as Ginger Roasted Pumpkin, Potatoes Au Gratin, Grilled Zucchini & Squash, Eggless Salad, Greek Salad, Balsamic Barley, etc.), a Sunday Brunch menu, and shakes/smoothies/juices. You can sample up to 3 items, so take advantage of that! I ended up choosing the Beef and Broccoli(this had really good flavor; I was pleasantly surprised as I’m not much of a Chinese fare person; this was seasoned well and had crunchy broccoli florets; it even comes with complimentary brown rice!) and 2 sides(the Macaroni & Cheese and the Asian Noodles; the Macaroni & Cheese was definitely thick and creamy, and kind of reminded me of having a cream cheese/labneh consistency; very cheesy, which was nice!); the Asian Noodles were perfectly-cooked al dente cold noodles with crunchy veggies, all dressed with a nice soy sauce-like sauce). I also tried their Strawberry cake(thick frosting, but a great strawberry taste) and their cornbread(so moist and quite delicious!). I also had to try one of their smoothies, the Tropical Delight(this contained strawberries, mango, pineapple, and banana) — this was so refreshing and definitely a great way to wash it all down: D Everything was seasoned well, very flavorful, and stick-to-your-ribs goodness. The staff here are super friendly, and there are plenty of seats to enjoy your meal; in terms of ordering, you just walk straight to the back, order, and then go back out to pay up at the front at the cashier in the dining area. I’d love to come back and try out their other smoothie flavors, the giant cinnamon roll, their Vegan Salisbury Steak, and the Vegan Chick’n Drummies. Parking is quite limited, but free spots can be found along Hobart. +Beef & Broccoli +Asian Noodles +Macaroni & Cheese +Strawberry cake +Tropical Delight smoothie +friendly staff +extremely limited parking

Despite having different signs out front, Woodlands and NuVegan Café are under the same banner, and what they’re doing inside is essentially the same. The atmosphere inside was nice, if a little loud, and the food is all vegan and largely in the vein of imitating American comfort food. When I met up for brunch here, someone commented how hard it is to find vegan waffles. Not something I’d ever given a ton of thought to, honestly. One doesn’t look at a waffle and think of it as an animal product, but most of them have eggs or dairy in the batter I guess. In any case, the animal-free waffles I got were tasty and substantial, and it was nice to have a side of scrambled tofu to add in some protein. I went back for a juice blend, a citrus-y creation that had some nice zip to it. As with their other location, I was confused about what I could order and in what combination and what it would cost. Only one loose menu was circling around, and even that wasn’t altogether helpful. My smoothie options were likewise confusing; what I got was a fruit drink but was listed under a set of nut milk bases. I wish it was clearer, but the bottom line is if you can order, you’ll probably find something you like, and you’ll be glad that no animals were harmed in the making of it.

The food is good and as a non-vegetarian I must say there was nothing really weird that pulled me out of my zone. I really like their fresh juices. I had a tropical blend with ginger and carrot. My entrée was solid. The Collards were not bad just needed to be cooked a little longer, the leaves were a little tough. The mac is the show stopper here and it was good, better than a lot of diary based-mac and cheese I’ve had in restaurants. The chicken fingers were okay, the bbq and hot sauce they supply really help to trick the taste buds. The vegan chocolate chip is pretty good too. I eyed a few of the cakes and I said that I would go for a slice on another occasion. The staff is nice. The restaurant could use a little music, overall the place has a good vibe. It was nice to get the Woodland’s take on soul food without feeling stuffed.

Most vegan meals I’ve consumed have been bland and mysterious-looking with odd textures. When I saw that this place was«vegan soul food,» I was intrigued. The gentleman serving food had the most genuine smile and served us very generous portions from the hot selections. The Mac and Cheese(very hearty) came highly recommended, which I got along with the Thursday Special(Vegan Lasagna– packed with flavor, ever so slightly sweet) and Green Beans(bright, perfect slightly crunchy texture). The interior is simple and low key, with plenty of seating for large groups. I will most certainly be back with my vegan friend who will probably be joyously sobbing from the selections and happy feelings in the mouth that Woodland’s provides.
