Ok. So earlier in my review, I said I would try this place again for the wings — and I have. That’s the sole reason to have earned another star. I don’t know if I will continue to explore their menu but I will def be returning for some wings. I ordered 4 wings for $ 4.55 thinking, «Gosh, that’s kind of expensive.», until I got the humongous things! This is drum, flat, and wing all in one, 4 of them! It comes with a liberal side of mumbo sauce and for the past two times I’ve ordered, you can tell that they come straight from the fryer. Even after I take the bus for a few stops to my apartment, take the dog for a quick walk and shower — only then are they cool enough to eat. Then as I bite into one of the wings, it is juicy, it has just the right amount of breading like momma puts on her chicken to give that decent crunch, then dip it in that cool sweet mumbo sauce(or no sauce — its just that good). How is it that the wings here are better than a lot of the American restaurants? Maybe they eat more wings in China than I realized. lol.

Open conveniently long hours, diverse menu, reasonably priced, tasty Chinese. What’s not to love? Their credit card minimum is a little high and the store front is a little dirty, but not enough to ding them a point. I really love the wontons.

I’ve spent the past 4 months(obviously not consecutively lol) trying to find a good Chinese food place to order from in DC — just moved here in late March. I have been constantly disappointed in the places I did try… Until I tried this place. Thanks so MUCH for offering 1) a variety of options 2) fast delivery 3) DELICIOUSFOOD! My boyfriend and I ordered(via grubhub app) and got: 1) orange chicken(DELICIOUS — made perfectly, and A LOTOFFOOD in the container — rice came in separate smaller container) 2) appetizer of cheese wontons — DELICIOUS and perfect as well(+ another free one of these, due to ordering a certain amount of $$ — check out coupons on grubhub, this place has like 10 of them) 3) beef lo mein — DELICIOUS again, with perfect noodles and amazing beef. Again A LOT. I have found that DC is ALWAYS expensive when you order food — the $ 9 something for the orange chicken almost held me off from ordering because back home(WI) I could get a large meal for $ 6 when ordering Chinese food. I went for it anyway and glad i did since the amount of food actually was, for once, worth the quantity of food and the taste. Also — very fast delivery!

Fast delivery is the only good thing I have to say about New Tong Shin. I’ve never taken delivery food back to any establishment. We ordered beef and broccoli, but my boyfriend and I have come to the conclusion that what we got was not beef. I have no idea what that meat was. It was grisly, greasy and had the consistency of crunchy hamburger meat. They gave us a refund with no questions asked. Never ordering from here again.

As soon as I saw the lightening and heard the rain, I knew I was going to order in. I settled on this restaurant while scrolling through an anonymous messaging app. People started talking about(Americanized) Chinese food and this restaurant kept popping up as everyone’s go-to place. Of course, I had to double-check with Unilocal and I almost about-faced when I read the review about someone finding a hair in their food. Still, countless people on the app SWORE by this restaurant and it was willing to deliver to me in the storm. Since one of the latest reviews mentioned ordering through Grubhub to get them their food faster, I, too, tried the website. The website made it easy for me to look at the menu, understand their specials, and get an estimated time of delivery(over an hour). It’ll even let you tip online! After about 40 minutes, I received a phone call informing me that my food had arrived. The delivery time seemed pretty standard. To me, the expedited feeling is only because they overestimate the delivery time. Now, I was a little greedy and ordered both shrimp fried rice and dumplings. The dumplings were delicious and I ate them in an embarrassingly short amount of time. I tried the shrimp fried rice for the pure sake of trying the food while it was fresh. The first thing I noticed about my shrimp fried rice was that there was a lot of shrimp. Typically, places skimp on it. Instead, there seemed to be an abundance of shrimp and hardly any vegetables. I poured some soy sauce on my food and realized that I had forgotten to ask for duck sauce. My experience has been in the past that places will still typically throw in a few packets of duck sauce even if you don’t ask for it. That was not the case here. My food tasted incomplete without it and a little dry. I couldn’t eat much because I was already full, but I wouldn’t have wanted to.(Also, in case anyone was wondering, they do properly lean their shrimp. I ALWAYS check for this.) If ordering the dumpling alone would get me to the $ 10 minimum delivery fee, I would gladly order them again, but, unfortunately, it does not meet the minimum. As for the shrimp fried rice, I’m on the fence.

Well, this is a sad review to write. I was planning on giving it five stars for lightning fast delivery and extremely tasty beef with broccoli combination. Alas, halfway through my food I found a hair. There are few things more disgusting then finding a hair after you have already consumed half a dish. I won’t be back, which is a shame.

This place REALLYISFAST! I ordered my meal online at at 4:18pm. I then received a text notifying that my order would arrive between 5:05pm &5:18pm. My order arrived at 4:44pm The food arrived warm & delicious. Wasn’t oily or tasteless. This is my 1st time ordering food from this place & they made a great 1st impression on.

After trying out several different Chinese delivery options, I have settled on this one. The lo mein and the fried rice are ok. 35 minute wait time.

Quick delivery, and only a $ 10 minimum. The driver came right up to my apartment door, rather than making me go outside. My food was nice and hot. The veggie spring rolls are very crispy, nothing fancy, but it’ll do.

The delivery was on time and the food was very good. I recommend this as a lazy alternative to going out or cooking in.

I’m not much of a Chinese food snob, but the food at this place isn’t even the«so bad it’s good» kind of Chinese. It’s just plain bad. I got the shrimp with mixed vegetables and my shrimp was squishy. «Squishy» is pretty much the one thing you don’t want from your shrimp. My dad got cashew chicken and thought it was pretty terrible, too. I got one of their free egg rolls, and it was totally bland. With so many other Chinese food options in the area, there’s no reason to eat at this place.

I’m gonna tell you folks one thing. I’m a straight shooter. A no BS kinda guy. I’m also a guy who loves his Chinese food. With that outta the way, I’m gonna make one thing crystal clear. New Tong Shin is not only the best Chinese food in the District of Columbia, but it’s the best Chinese food in North America. I’m a New Tong Shin supporter through and through. These fine workers put their blood, sweat and tears into my take out meals and for that I couldn’t be more grateful. Just outstanding cuisine. I’d even wager a bet that their signature dishes could stand toe to toe with authentic Chinese food from the motherland. Take it from me folks. New Tong Shin is the epitome of what all Chinese food should be. Fantastic. I’d make the 200 mile trek from my home in New Jersey ONFOOT just to smell this food. Not buy, but smell. A deep, passionate sniff. God this stuff gets me going. PS — their fortune cookies are some of the best around as well. Can’t get enough of ‘em. Scrawfo, out.

If you’re looking for something good and cheap, New Tong Shing is for you. The food is pretty good, not great, but the delivery is very fast.

Maybe things change, but I have to vehemently disagree with the previous posters. We’ve ordered from New Tong Shin twice in the last few weeks and, compared to competitors in Brookland, NTS is our new favorite and is among the better Chinese delivery I’ve had in DC. That being said, I’ve never ordered soups, so can’t attest as to whether there is any difference between the egg drop and the hot and sour, or the level of grease floating on top, as reported by other posters. Perhaps we’ll try next time. We frequently order Chow Fun noodles from NTS and elsewhere, and the version from NTS is really good, better even than some I’ve had in Chinatown. I especially like that they add veggies like mushrooms and carrots as well as the standard onion/scallions. And it goes without saying that they use the luscious fresh wide rice noodles, and not the lackluster rice stick that we’ve gotten elsewhere. We’re also suckers for combination egg foo young and General Tso’s chicken. Yes, I know they are the height(bottom?) of american chinese delivery cuisine, but i’ve found NTS’s renditions of both to be tasty. Frequently GTC is too sticky and sweet, but here it’s tangy and not too sweet, and the broccoli is cooked just right. And their egg foo young is great comfort food. We’ve also ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan(Chicken and Veg in a light sauce), and it was very tasty and all the ingredients tasted very fresh. We’d order it again, even if we weren’t trying to be «healthy.» Lastly, both times we’ve ordered, they’ve sent us a free container of something. The first time it was stir fried green beans. This time it was a small chicken fried rice. Both were fresh, not greasy, and much appreciated as treats in the bag. As for customer service, I found the employees to be polite and efficient on the phone and in person. My only complaint is that they haven’t taken me seriously both times I’ve asked for something to be extra spicy. We’re both pretty big for chili heat and when the requested dishes arrived, i couldn’t really tell if they’d tried to up the heat or not. Overall, I’d definitely recommend New Tong Shin to neighbors and anyone else in their delivery area. It’s a solid entry in the DC chinese delivery scene and I’m very glad its here and that we decided to try it.

I will have to agree with some of Kelly G’s review. The part about the grease mainly. This has to be the absolutely worst Chinese food I have ever had. Even my 18 year old son, who will eat almost anything, did not eat his food from New Tong Shin. We ordered delivery, one hot & sour soup, one egg drop soup, curry chicken and shrimp fried rice. Kelly, you were right, the soup had a layer of grease floating on the top. There was absolutely no difference in the coloring between the egg drop and the hot & sour soup. We thought, well, everyone has their own recipe so we gave it a try. Nope, one bite was all that it took and both soups were dumped down the garbage disposal. OK, maybe it was just that we got bad soup… on to the entrees. Well, there was a shrimp in the curried chicken(not so bad if you like shrimp – however, if you are allergic to shellfish as I am, that’s a whole different story) so, no curried chicken. The shrimp fried rice was not even remotely close to palatable. My son tried one bite and it went straight down the garbage disposal. All in all, there was not one single bite of decent food to be had. Now, on to customer service. I am not one to call and ask for a refund, I almost never send a plate back at a restaurant(even if the food is not great or there is a mistake). In this case, I just had to call. We asked for a refund, explaining our dissatisfaction with the food, politely I must add. They first said they would refund it, then sent their delivery person back to pick up the uneaten food(apparently they did not believe us that it was bad and assumed we had lied and actually eaten the food). Well, most of the food was already down the garbage disposal, with only the shrimp fried rice remaining. However, even that was already in the garbage can behind the house because the shrimp smelled so horrible, we could not keep it in the house. So, the restaurant called us back, told us that because we did not send the food back with the driver, they would not give us a refund. After much back and forth(some of which I could almost understand), I believe they agreed to give us a refund. Bottom line: Horrible food, horrible service. Please do yourself a favor, if you are thinking about ordering from New Ton Shin: DON’T!!!

This place sticks chinese food menus in my screen door handle ALLTHEDAMTIME. And tonight, after my vigorous pilates workout at Excel(see Unilocal), I had a taste for Wonton Soup. So I ordered a large. Then I went across the street to get a few things from Yes! Market. My order was ready when I returned. Cool. Not too expensive, its wonton soup after all. When I get it home and open it, is hot and dark brown(almost the color of soy sauce), and full of scallions as well as huge wontons. I could see the grease glistening on top of the serving I poured myself. I’m like«ok, ok, this is just a different broth», you know trying to keep an open mind. It tasted pretty good. Left my heart pounding in my ears something fierce! Sodium for daze! Dam! {…grabs heart… staggers to and fro… a la Fred Sanford…“I’m comin’ Lisbeth…} The wontons. Meh, I’ve had better. The wrappers on these were very doughy. Like apple turnover doughy. The filling inside did have a slight sweet taste to it so secretly I wondered if they got the recipe mixed up or something. I ate two and still had four in the quartainer. Plus the shreds of meat and more scallions in the bottom. Man. If quantity is what you’re after, this place is for you. They take credit cards with a $ 10.00 minimum. Sheesh. They also have this plexiglass maze that doesn’t really look bullet proof to me. Anyway, they hand your package around/through this plexi-maze after you’ve paid. Gee thanks. It is strictly«to-go» here. Don’t even think about coppin a squat to down a few forkfuls before you finish walking home. There is no seating. Get your food and go. Be OUT! Hmmm. Will I go back? Its a 50⁄50 chance right now. Maybe I will. Maybe I’ll try the next chinese joint that sticks a menu in my screen door handle. We’ll see.
