Church of the Epiphany

AMAZING music program here, with the finest instruments (organ and piano) and fantastic acoustics in a beautiful, serene space. Attracts world class musicians.

The courtyard is a quiet place to eat lunch/​snack, reflect on the day and read a book. Find a spot on one of the benches and enjoy the breeze. The scenery is nice, too. Plenty of pretty flowers to see and smell. Very serene. Almost makes you forget you’re smack dab in the middle of all the downtown madness.

I didn’t actually attend a service at this church, I attended a choral performance – but I wanted to comment on the structure of the church itself. It has a lovely stone face – right in the middle of downtown. The inside could be lovelier it if was more loved (some plaster work here, some paint there) — but it has that lovely old-​world feel. And a center aisle — -with a lovely courtyard adjoining the place. So if your looking for a place for your special day, you may want to become Episcopalian.

I didn’t go to any services here (it’s an Episcopal church), but I did stay here for a week because of the YSOP (Youth Service Opportunities Project) program. I do know that they are super involved with the homeless community in the city. For one, they allow YSOP to hold their dinners for the area homeless in their parish hall. Their building also houses the YSOP and Street Sense offices. On top of that, they have what they call Street Church, which is every Tuesday at 1pm in Franklin Square Park. They serve lunch and also talk about worship and the homeless community (to volunteer to help, check their website).
The church itself is pretty. Simple and straightforward in design with nice stain glass windows (I don’t know much about Episcopal churches.). When I dropped in around 2pm, there were a few people praying, reflecting, and sleeping. Of course, not all at once.
If you check out their site it looks like they have TONS of programs revolving around diversity, hospitality, youth, arts and religion, environmental issues, 20s 30s fellowship, volunteerism, peace, justice. Etc. They also have that nice side garden that is quite lovely to sit and reflect, eat lunch, or just take a moment to yourself. It’s that patch of green amongst tall buildings and businesses. The sexton, receptionists, and staff were very accommodating and did a great job of welcoming us to the fair city of DC. :) OH and super close to the Metro Center (13^th Street) stop.
