Broadway Cafe

I went here based on the previous devious review and want as impressed. The place was clean. Coffee was good. No beer is served but you can bring your own. I had chicken fried steak based on server recommendation. I forgot that up north they put brown gravy rather than cream gravy. It was good, not gristly. You don’t go there for the atmosphere, only because you are hungry

I will admit that I was a bit worried about the place when I pulled up. Surrounded by long ago abandoned buildings that are falling appart. This city was long ago hit by a depression and appears that it has never fully recovered.
When I walked in the inside didn’t look much different from the surroundings outside, a hastily built shack with exposed 2x4s where they must have ran out of drywall or some material that they used to separate the kitchen from the dining rooms.
When the coffee came it was in a mug that looks like it was a reject from goodwill, I was surprised to see that other customers had the same mugs which would indicate that they came as part of a set.
So why am I giving this place five stars? The staff was friendly and courteous. And most importantly the food was amazing, I highly recommend the smothered burrito.
This is the quintessential American diner and if you are a weary I80 traveler you will enjoy the hospitality and the food, for the photo enthusiasts the abandoned shacks would make for some amazing shots.
