Come here for the meat. They have an excellent selection of fresh beef, chicken, pork, and seafood products at pretty amazing prices. Prices on canned goods are pretty good and while I don’t buy frozen dinners they have them at incredibly low prices, a friend of mine buys dozens at a time and takes them to work. Prices on snacks are really good too, chips, crackers, cookies, nuts, etc… You have to love that everything is tax free. I stay away from the fresh produce as it tends to be priced higher than Walmart and other local supermarkets. You won’t generally find any real bargains in the deli section either. Oh yeah, you can find amazingly low prices on liquor at the adjoining package store too. I can’t go on my own so I occasionally tag along when one of my retired military buddies is making the trip. I don’t go very often but when I do you better believe the freezer in my garage is packed full. After our trip yesterday my wife put a few heavy objects on top of the chest freezer to keep the door from popping open.

It used to be much better. After renovation, it’s hard to find things with the not-practical map. It seems many things are pricier than before. Less discounts. I had to spend there for about an hour to find all staffs I needed. I hope other commissaries will not be changed like this.

Commissaries are only a good deal if they have variety, quality, and are well stocked. A good amount of the time we have to stop by Kroger or some place on the way home to finish shopping. Vegetables are pretty basic – if you need something out of the standard broccoli, asparagus, bok choi, beans, onions, etc., category, then you’ll have to go somewhere else. Vegetables at any commissary don’t seem to have the shelf life once you get them home as veggies bought off-base – we learned that almost 30 years ago. And we’ve gotten home only to find some veggies – onions particularly – were moldy and we had to thorw them away. Veggies at Kroger or Farm Fresh just look healthier on the shelves. The other issue is having items in stock – not uncommon to see the meat shelves cleared out or the banana bin empty, especially if it’s evening. I went back 2 or 3 days in a row looking for whole chickens once. One of the meat department guys said they get restocked every morning at 8am. If you work on base, I guess it’s not uncommon to do grocery shopping during the day. What they never seem to be low on are pizzas, soda, Hot Pockets, french fries… The one great thing about the Little Creek commissary is the seafood department. However, that’s contracted out separately and not stocked or managed by DECA.

Nothing beats the Commissary in terms of groceries!!! Tax free and lower cost price compare to the market. The commissary has also the best quality of steaks and meat. You can only find the seasonal products such as fruits and vegetables in this place. Sale surprises are always going on!!!

Can’t beat the deal. Tax free and a wide variety of stock. Remember to have a few dollars to tip the baggers since they work for tips. Don’t go on the 1st or 15th. Within a couple of days of payday the store is crazy.

If you have the military hookup and can get someone to buy your meats at the commissary I really suggest you take advantage of it. I don’t really compare prices but I got a ton of pork, chicken and beef at a phenomenal price. Normally where you’ll spend $ 7−9/lb(beef) at Harris Teeter/Target/Farm Fresh you can get for 20−30% less. Chicken and pork was unbelievably cheap. Weird, I noticed beef jerky was very reasonable. I’m sure using someone else’s military privileges to stock my refrigerator and freezer is unethical but I’m pretty sure others do it, too. Oh, shopping there sure were the days…

I enjoy shopping here when I’m on the base. Some things are much cheaper than they are at a regular grocery store, but a lot are similarly priced. Sales are tax-free, but there is still a 4.5% convenience fee. What the heck is that about? After I tip the baggers, my savings are usually nonexistent. They tend to bag too heavy and my bread and produce ends up squashed and bruised. Don’t shop here on the 1st&15th or the first Saturday after those dates– especially right before Thanksgiving. I only made that mistake once. LOL The store is clean and well lit, and the aisles are nice and wide. They have a decent selection of merchandise, as well.

I have been going to this commissary for years. When I was a kid I came here with my mom and now I come here as an adult. It’s undergone a lot of changes over the years but the overall layout has remained the same. The vegetables are always fresh and the prices can’t be beat. The meat is priced well and fresh too. My only complaint are the baggers… how hard is it to bag groceries??? It’s not that hard, because I’ve done it. But I guess if they just work for tips they don’t really care much, but I would think that if that’s all I was earning, I would be bagging the heck out of some groceries and doing it was a fabulous smile! But at the end of the day, this is my commissary and I like it better than the one outside Norfolk Naval Base.

There’s no reason that a commissary should ever receive anything less than five stars. All of the food is significantly cheaper, they’re always incredibly organized, and there’s always a sale. The Little Creek Commissary is still slightly better, and for two reasons, 1). their large selection of fresh seafood, and 2). their impressive produce section. I was able to get real exotic mushrooms! Usually when I have mushrooms on my grocery list, the choices consist of portobello and crimini. Neither of which are that exotic. They also had parsley and cilantro by the bushel… common in grocery stores, but not so much in commissaries, usually its packaged. Anyway, I never visit any commissary on the 1st or the 15th so I’ve always had really pleasant experiences. No matter when you go however, the snack aisle will test your patience. I just feel like every parent down the snack aisle has an average of 3 – 5 children, so you’ll have to deal with overly excited rug rats, and frustrated as all hell adults. Its not nice. I typically leave my cart at the end of the aisle and maneuver my way through the crowds like Mario collecting coins.
