Ammazing Food! I just had Dosa’s here; It’s not in the menu and I guess I am one of the first to taste it and I’d say its one of the best dosas in a restaurant I’ve had in the states. Their sambhar is thik and with veggies in it, the right amount of sourness and crisp dosas. Try out the Bhalla Dahi too! Its full of spices, which I frankly wasn’t expecting — and its yumm! Had the samosa chat which is very good too. Overally a truly satisfying experience.

As a Brit in New York, I was worried that I’d struggle to find a decent Indian restaurant. I tried a couple in Ithaca, which were disappointing to say the least. Then a work colleague of my wife’s suggested the Royal. We went along and I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting much, but from the minute we walked in I knew I’d be ok. The décor was very reminiscent of how Indian restaurants looked in London so I immediately felt at home. We were seated quickly and almost immediately our glasses were filled with iced water. This water kept coming throughout our meal. I ordered the garlic chicken and my wife a good old chicken tikka masalla, a dish invented a couple of hundred miles north of my London origins in Glasgow. The waiter also asked how hot we’d like each dish. Medium proved perfect for us. Both were delicious and had a perfect heat to taste balance. We finished everything and felt sure we’d found a restaurant we would be returning to. The waiter then brought over deserts, which we hadn’t ordered but were complimentary. We’ve dined here 4 times now and have left full and happy each time. The last two occasions we sat in the bar area, which I found more relaxing. The only downside, which seems to be a common thing here is that there are no side dishes on the menu. You can have a full vegetable dish but not a smaller side, which I must say surprised me. All in all I’d thoroughly recommend the Royal Indian to anyone looking for an authentic Indian experience.
